View Full Version : Rude shoppers at Colony

I frequent a lot of the Publix stores here.

I was just at Colony and some woman came running with her cart at the end of the aisle and almost
clobbered me with the cart. She had her grand daughter in the cart.

We both stopped and I said “oh my goodness slow down.”
She then proceeds to tell me I’m cranky.

No apology, no sorry.

I don’t know what is with people that go to Colony.
They would just run you over if they could.

I seem to encounter rude people or rude driver's most everywhere I go. That's not to say that everyone is rude by any means. It's definitely a minority but leaves a bad taste. It's also not isolated to TV or even Florida. There will just always be that certain percentage of any population that were raised to believe they are special, more important than anyone else, and that the world revolves around them and you are just in their way. Yes, these are the same ones that you see driving down the highway with a cell phone between their face and their steering wheel. Nothing bad can happen to them - they are special. My goal is just to give them as little of my oxygen as possible and realize they have not managed to change their ways to this point in their life so they certainly are not going to change now for me.

What wasn’t surprising is she then went back to almost running with her cart.

I told her she was rude. Probably didn’t hear me ahe was going so fast.

I am a "people" that shops at Colony. I would not run you over, even if I could. And, I am not rude...usually. Since we can't hear the tone of your voice, and you were upset with HER, we must assume you said that very sweetly with a smile on your face, in no way chastising her. THEN, she would have been rude in her response. Maybe had you not spoken, even sweetly as we assume, she would have apologized. Just sayin'....not rudely, at all.

I go at 7AM when they first open. In & out I like it because at that hour nobody has had a chance to get PO'D yet. Workers are very friendly and those that are there know what they want, where it is and get the heck out.

If it is any condolence to you, there are rude people in Melbourne, FL too where we lived three times. It was partly for this reason we decided not to live in FL for good.

That's our main store. I did learn not to go into any grocery stores here between 4:30 to 6:00 PM because that's when locals get out of work and most villagers feel they have to do a specific thing at a specific time, like eat dinner precisely 3:30 PM! If I go to a store it's early in the mornings and do beer runs at noon!

That does not seem logical at all to me. One woman was pushing her grocery cart fast and almost hit someone and did not apologize.

But LOTS of other folks in Florida are kind and thoughtful and loving and have good manners. And careful with their carts. Sometimes I do block the aisle when I try to remember WHAT spice or soup I am out of...…..

Here in the Minneapolis area the worst drivers are young mothers hurrying to pick up their kids at day care centers before 6:00 or they get charged double time. So we avoid going out between 5:30 and 6:30.

Oh I know there are nice people in FL. However it is difficult to know where they are; you have to live there first. We were lucky the first time and very unlucky the next and last two times.

It is OK to be positive but not when we step over the line into denial.

Better to get "clobbered" INSIDE the store rather than in the PARKING LOT. IMO THE most dangerous places to drive anywhere - including The Villages.

We ran in for peaches on the way home yesterday and the parking lot was crowded, hard to find a place. We discussed that that location is Publix most successful store. We also discussed that there have been many more grocery locations south of 466A added recently; Walmart, two more Publix and Aldi's and Winn-Dixie.

It is indeed crowded and sought after. I have never witnessed an adult running with a cart. Have had rude people push ahead or by and not say excuse me here in The Villages. Can't remember that happening to me in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky or West Virginia.

If it happens again OP, call me and I will beat her up.

I shop at the Publix at Mulberry Grove, on 42 in the North. The GM there told me that the Publix markets at Southern Trace, Colony, and Spanish Springs do 2-3 times his sales volume, hence 2-3 times more crowded, busy, and rude shoppers.

That's surprising to me. When we moved from Pennsylvania to Michigan, I was appalled by the number of young mothers who would bring their over-tired, screaming, tantrum-throwing children to the grocery stores and simply ignore them while they made every other shopper's experience miserable. I had never encountered that in PA or NJ. They negotiated with their kids, rather than directing them, and mostly lost. Everyone else suffered.

The other part of your equation... Minneapolis? I loooooooooved Michigan, but there's, like, two months of summer. If you're never going to live in Florida, I'd be interested in knowing what interest TOTV holds for you.

If you are talking about instacart you have to be home to receive the deliveries. You go on Publix website and order all of your groceries and pick what time you want them delivered. I've not had one mistake yet. She said they get checked at the checkout to make sure they have exactly what you ordered. I have made a couple of mistakes myself ordering the incorrect size of product. You get the buy one get one free products as well. I find that I don't buy anything that isn't on the list which is really good. In the store I get easily distracted. Publix sent me a $15.00 off coupon and they took the amount off at checkout. I used $7.50 for a tip and got free delivery and $7.50 worth of free groceries.

FedEx is my amazon prime, any shelf life products. We have our protein raised, so I do not buy from any grocery. When I do order cold or frozen, you pick a delivery window of an hour, always on time.

Up north Whole Foods is tied to amazon, I order and will be on my doorstep in an hour, or when I choose to have it delivered from 5am to midnight, 7 days a week. Every grocery offers a delivery system, up north.

Here in TV I order online and pick up on my way home from somewhere. I have not been in a grocery since amazon started their service over a year ago. I do however stop at a farmers market to support the locals

I've been in TV 11 years - 99.99999% are not rude. The .000001 who are seem to live south of 466 but then again they could be anywhere. When I cross paths with a "rudie" I ignore 'em cuz no one is going to change 'em. They are a product their upbringing and the "progressive" times that influenced them. They are the narcissists among us. Ignore them for they know not what they do or why - they are the same ones who suffer from road rage. How many times have you heard or read of someone getting shot and maybe killed over what seems like a trivial incident when you just happen to get in the "rudie's" way. Better to understand you aren't going convert them to a more pleasant human being so why bother irritating them further.

It’s not an EXCUSE for people to be rude, but we never know what someone is going through that causes a reaction like that. To me, the villages is like a number of small towns alongside each other anywhere...but there’s one name for it. People are rude wherever you go, so I don’t think you can generalize the behavior of people in one grocery store. She could have been harried- some grandkids are a real challenge. Or she could have personal mental/emotional issues that you don’t know about that may affect her behavior. My first week here I had someone yelling at me from a car. I was crossing the street and it didn’t look like she had plans to stop for me; she stopped as close to me as she could as I was in the middle of the road. I was “j-walking” and heard about it as she yelled out her window at me. I was wrong, but this isn’t NY or any other big city! All she had to do was slow down for two seconds and enough for me to step up into the curb. She was far enough away from me to do so, but she kept going. I’ve also had people lean on their horns, for example. That person could be a new neighbor or someone I may meet in a social situation someday, which would be very awkward! I would have just moved from her quickly and think to myself that she’s an idiot, shake my head in disbelief, and keep my comments to myself. You were rightfully ****ed, but a comment such as yours is just as rude as her not apologizing. What’s the point, unless you were in the same kind of mood that she may have been in and you needed to chastise her. Just saying...

THEN, she would have been rude in her response. Maybe had you not spoken, even sweetly as we assume, she would have apologized. Just sayin'....not rudely, at all.

People do not see themselves. People, read some of the posters, think they are perfect-in fact they are sure of it.

Here is a pet peeve of mine and I hope I word it correctly.

I'm in no hurry driving my car in a parking lot. If I see someone wanting to cross in front of me. I'm happy if they take their time. What bothers me is if they start to sprint or walk much faster then they are use to. We would all do that when we were young but should someone get hurt, because I wanted to give them the right away, how have I helped that person? I know it's their fault but they would have been safer if I did not give them the right away. So please take your time walking in front of a car even though your life long instinct is to reciprocate and rush.

When I fist came down I was in a par 3 tuesday tournament. You can win money and you're on a team. I dropped a 40 ft putt and jumped in the air. I pulled a calf muscle. I'm so old I have to stretch before I putt.

I was on line at Colony Publix and the cashier rang up an incorrect price for a tomato. While I was telling her that there was a mistake a "gentleman" behind me threw a dollar at me and shouted "I'll pay for the XXXX tomato, I'm in a hurry. " I continued to discuss the tomato and stepped gingerly over the dollar bill on the floor.

Hi, well, so you have now met another Crank in the Village stores ?? There is a lot of that.
Back OFF and try to enjoy retirement.
There is not a thing you can do, so try to bear with it.

Notice how so many homes are for sale, and so many with outside Realtors, think about it.

Good Luck

If I picked this apart I can see that I have been in everyone's shoes. I recall vacationing in Hilton Head as a younger man and not having the vacation time to stand on line while Gomer and Goober the check out guy discus the catfish pond. I have been the one not agreeing with the price of a tomato. I have been the cashier that knows the frustrations of that job and quite frankly dealing with someone my age. When I worked behind a deli counter where this sweet little senior citizen asked for a quarter pound of bologna and my buddy said here's the 4 pounds of bologna you asked for and she then hit him over the head with a loaf of Italian bread, We couldn't stop laughing.

They all make good stories if you see the humor in most everything on one day but on another it's just frustrating as can be.

Amazing its alway the other person that is rude, in a hurry, bad driver, etc. I like to think I am a normally decent person. However, I have been ****ed off at times in my life, and I am sure I have been rude at times. Over the years I drove for a living for many years, yet I must have been unattentive at least once, and cut someone off in my vehicle. We are all on the clock here folks. Enjoy whats left lighten up.

Honesty and an unbiased acknowledgement of our own occasional failings...is very refreshing.

I too admit to your same... 'less than always perfect' behavior. :o

There are people who gracefully got old and there are those who got old and with no manners. Your lucky this is your first encounter.

Unfortunately you ran into a grumpy or rude person that couldn't just excuse me or I'm sorry! But the Colony Publix isn't the only place that you run into these kind of people, they're everywhere. It's best probably to not say anything because the way society is today you've got to watch what you say because this kind of person is the kind of person that will pull a gun on you or attack you. If there's no actual harm done you said what you had to say & just let it go. I've had the same things happen to me, but it's not worth getting into a fight over or worse. God Bless you & God will address this person when their time comes!

I agree with this. Plus oftentimes it's the victim's day that is ruined, while the perpetrator goes on his or her way either oblivious or feeling self-justified. Don't even bother to interact with these kind of people. Just move on.

My daughter-in-law used to work in a store in a very large city. I asked her how she liked working with the public, and she said, "I'm not going to let some rude person ruin MY day. Their nasty attitude is their problem."

Just moving to The Villages will not change people that have been rude all their lives and not recognize rudeness because where they came from almost everyone is loud and rude. This will never change.

You are so right. Those were the same no matter where they lived before coming here. Moving here does not make one either rude or polite.

I would like to tell any Publix employee reading this that this post does not represent me or anyone I know in The Villages. I have NEVER met a nicer bunch than those patient souls who work at Publix.

Or, for that matter at Winn-Dixie.

I would agree about every publix OTHER than Colony
. It is the only Publix I've been rudely yelled at by an employee.

What wasn’t surprising is she then went back to almost running with her cart.

I told her she was rude. Probably didn’t hear me ahe was going so fast.

You don't deserve this garbage. After all this time on this Forum, this is the first time I remember you ever reporting getting a hard time from anyone. I wish I was there to give you a hand. But then again someone would have to bail us both out.

We switched the place and time for shopping. We go all over the place but avoid Colony because of what we have read about the crowding. There are too many alternatives of where to shop and changing your shopping time will surprise you. If you shop at 7 pm or later its like Publix kept the store open just for you.

Sorry for your trouble Mrs. Pat, you don't deserve that kind of treatment from anyone at this point in life. None of us deserve to be handled anyway but kindly. What a bird the other person must have been rushing to wait in the checkout line?

I have too! In the produce department. Then one time a cashier criticized what I was buying. Very unprofessional.

I won't go there anymore, what with the crowded parking lot and store. I almost understand why the employees in that store might be short with the shoppers, especially in the winter season.

We had switched to Winn Dixie and now include the Publix down by 44.

I used to go to that store quite a lot but when it got so crazy busy and the parking lot was so packed...we found places that sell food etc. We choose the time of day as well. Don't go at 10 (it's when folks 1st seem to get out and about), noon (as the workers all stop by for lunch/food) or late afternoon (as folks going home from work stop for something for supper). There are plenty of good choices here.

I agree that it "seems" like folks are more rude here. Maybe it's due to where they were brought up or the cities they moved here from OR the fact that they are dealing with "Life issues" and it spills over. Try to be polite and work the "Golden Rule" concept. It will work more times than not.

We give permission to others to affect our own attitudes...and we don't have to do that.

Thank you!

I have gotten in people’s way when I’m inattentive but I always apologize.
You should see the Villagers when I do, totally startled by my apology.

We all - including me - should at least try to be a little more aware of others.

I really appreciate your kind words.

Nobody wants to drive miles out of their way to grocery shop, but the Publix at Spanish Plaines is so much nicer than Spanish Springs with regard to crowding and ease of parking.
