I am sure there have been threads about this topic, but I can not find.
Looking for things to do outside TV.....like a day trip.
I know there is east coast, west coast beaches, which we have done. We have taken our bikes off campus, which was fun.
We welcome any ideas.

Have you taken the canal trip in Mt. Dora? Ringling Museum in Sarasota? Dali Museum in Tampa? Segway's along the riverwalk in Tampa? And who could pass up the mermaids at Weeki Wachee :)

Have you visited the Kennedy Space Center and the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame? I went there several years ago, and really enjoyed it.
Also, how about the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, home of Winter, the dolphin made famous in the "Dolphin Tale" movies? Very enjoyable, and the museum does great work rescuing marine life.

Gatorland is a fun day, also the Old Sugar Mill in DeLeon Springs in Deland. The Zoo in Sanford is a great place to visit in the summer, big old oaks pretty much shade the whole place.

Here are few ideas that we have done:
1. Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park - to see the manatee and other animals
2. Blue Heron River Tours in Deland - pontoon boat ride down the St. Johns river
3. Micanopy (near Gainsville) - interesting little town. Have lunch at the Old Florida Cafe
4. Devils Mill Hopper, Gainesville, FL - Very large and very old sink hole you can take stairs to the bottom
5. Blue Spring State Park, Orange City, FL - interesting area with crystal clear water spring
6. Florida Bike Trail, Inverness - Great bike trail starting point and can go north or south from the parking lot
7. Crystal River - interesting area with good restaurants & nice beach at west end of 44
8. Cedar Key - interesting little town and restaurants/bars but a long way from main highway

Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive...nice hard packed sand road through the wetlands where you drive 4-10 mph and view the birds, gators, turtles, rabbits, occasional bobcat. Very beautiful, free, open weekends, Lust Road is the entrance. You can take pictures. Early morning or late day is the best.

We go to Sarasota every winter. Ringling Circus Museum (unbelievable), Art Gallery (world class), rose gardens, and Mansion. Selby Botanical Gardens. The Aquarium and great beaches - Siesta Key and Anna Maria Island are our two favorites. Second on the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park - all the animals are native Florida, including the Rhino which was declared a citizen by the Governor. We also love Blue Spring State Park for Manatees in their natural habitat in winter.

I am a travel agent but I don't do much in the way of day trips. When people ask me about them I usually send them to either AAA (there is one at Lake Sumter Landing or another by the Publix plaza at Spanish Springs) or JP tours (Jp Tours in The Villages, Fl (http://www.jptours.net)). Both of them do day tours around Florida. I have done a few of the AAA tours and they are pretty good. if you are here in the winter I would recommend the St. Augustine trip.
