I noticed a thread with regards to a GE microwave problem, so I thought I would see if many encountered the howling noise coming from my 4 year old GE side by side refrigerator. If so, what was done to correct? Was it covered under a recall? What was the cost? Can't GE make anything that lasts?

Yep, had the same problem with our GE fridge...ours was more of a moan than a howl though. (Picture a haunted refrigerator and you're got it.)

The service guy replaced the printed circuit board - happily under the guarantee as he said that without the guarantee the cost would have been about 500 bucks.

If not for the guarantee, I would have bought a non-GE refrigerator - ANY non-GE refrigerator...rather than spend any money on the thing.

And as far as GE quality goes...so far we've had to have repairs to our washing machine (3 times), our refrigerator (see above), our range hood (the light exploded shattering the glass too), and our dishwasher (bearing died). Is there a pattern here?

grumble...mutter....

Had the haunted GE refrigerator. The DeSantis serviceman said that most likely it was the evaporator fan motor, and he ordered one up. He said that if that didn't cure it then it was the circuit board. Luckily it turned out to be the motor for a total of about $175.00. The refrigerator is five years old. BTW, the refigerator and GE dishwasher seem to be of "B" quality. Almost like GE has a lesser quality non-retail line.
