Will The Villages Fire Department replace smoke detector batteries?

They have in the past if you have the batteries and make an appointment. An investment of time now so they avoid an unfortunate situation with you at a later date.

Have batteries for all of your smoke detectors.

They will if you supply the batteries. They have a girl dedicated to this job. Very important to remember, don't discard any 9volt batteries without first covering over the contacts with electrical tape. If the contacts touch anything metal, even the contacts of another battery, it can start a fire. Don't believe me, take a battery and touch the contacts with a steel wool pad, such as brillo.

This is good advice. I have to admit that I am guilty of improper disposal. Thanks.

Think about getting 10 year batteries--in 10 years replace the smoke detector & battery--smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years

You are right. Smoke detectors have an expiration date on them.

I just did all of mine, ACE hardware has them in stock. I do the batteries once a year, cheap insurance.

We just replaced all of ours. Shop around. Lowes on 466A has them and they’re less expensive than at Ace. They come in singles and six packs. Remember that one in your home is usually a CO2 detector, which is more expensive—I think it was about $50.

One additional point. The FD has replaced my batteries in the past. However you must provide the ladder as well as the batteries

Not true they have ladders but yes you need to have batteries. If one of your smoke alarms is defective you must provide the new one. The service is to keep seniors off of ladders.

I had a problem with one of my smoke detectors and did a lot of research trying to figure out what was wrong. I did come across the need to replace older detectors as they wear out. Never would have realized this if I did not have a problem with my detector. Check your manufacture for the time frame. I think it might be between 7 and 10 years.

The shelf life of alkaline batteries is 10 years. So, why do you need to replace them, unless they are beeping? Some so-called experts say you should replace them every six months. Why?

Smoke detectors are good for 10 years. There is a date of manufacture on the back of the detector. Some come with a lithium battery that is good for 10 years. Some don't come with lithium batteries so you use alkaline batteries and change them once a year.
