I helping my neighbor who lost his wife about eight months ago. He loves dogs, so I am helping him to find a small house-broken loving dog. If you know of any that need a home, please let me know. I have found that some of the non-profit rescues charge around $500 for an adoption. He cannot afford that.

They seem to be about half that for small dogs. But you should contact them and they alternate going to the Lady Lake and Buffalo Ridge Pet Smart each Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. We got our Beau there and my sister-in-law got Terra. Terra was more as she is a pit bull mix and a good sized pooch. Very sweet though. They usually have a lot more smaller dogs than large. We also adopted our Baxter through Max's Pet Connection.
I don't think you will pay a lot for an older house-broken dog, especially if you talk to Max and explain the situation.
It's a great organization. Thanks for thinking of a rescue.

I volunteer with Max's Pet Connection and the approximate fee for a dog is $325. The fee is generally higher for puppies/purebreds and lower for older/special needs dogs. All of the dogs have the adoption fees now printed on the id cards which are attached to the crates. Keep in mind that the dogs are up to date on all shots, they are spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, and are kept in foster homes until their forever home can be found. There is a $25 non-refundable application fee, and if the adoption goes through, that fee is deducted from the final adoption fee of the dog. References are checked and a home visit is also completed.
The dogs come from kill shelters, owner surrender, and strays, but they stay in foster homes. We will be at the Lady Lake PetSmart on 441 on Saturday 7/28 and on alternate Saturdays at the new PetSmart on 466 on Wedgewood Lane. The hours are 10-2. Another poster included a link to the website (Thank you!), which I will re-post here for convenience: Max's Pet Connection (http://www.maxspetconnection.com/)
Anyone looking for a pet, please, please look at any pet rescue or the local animal shelters. There are some great pets waiting for their forever homes. My favorite breed? Rescue of course-my avatar is of our two rescues. We are blessed to have them in our lives.

once a month the humane society of sumter brings dogs to the Villages. they were just here last fri. I see from their website they have a few smaller dogs and the adoption fee until the end of the month is $125. Sometimes rescues give discounts if you take older dogs. you can call and find out when they are coming next month and to which rec center. they bring smaller dogs suitable for Villagers.

Then how is he going to to afford food and the inevitable vet bills?

At first, I dismissed this as a negative comment.
However, on second reading, I think Photo voices a valid concern.
Janet, I applaud your wanting to make a positive difference in this man's life. Good for you.
I assume this gentleman isn't young, and therefore probably should adopt an older well-trained dog.
Older dogs may well develop health issues that lead to expensive vet bills.
Also yearly check-ups and preventative pills for heartworm and lymes disease aren't cheap.
Janet, please make sure he can afford food, medication and vet bills before you make a decision.
Oh, and grooming is expensive, so a short-haired dog like Beau would be best.

I definitely didn't intend it as a negative comment, and after reading my post again, I could see how it could be misconstrued as being so. Having owned pets for many years, I know all too well the vet bills pet owners can incur.

This organization is terrific. We got our little guy there several months ago and he is perfect, our house is a home again. When we picked pup (he is about 3) up, he came all vetted, along with a few days worth of food, leash, collar, a toy and something else. Well worth the adoption fee, and special thanks to all the folks who make it happen.

Congratulations -- your new dog picked a great mom.

South Lake Animal League (aka The Animal League) has over 200 pets I just read. That has to be cats and dogs. One of my dogs came from there. It is about 13 miles out of Leesburg. And assuming he is a senior and if he adopts a senior, he gets a discount on the adoption fees. Is he looking for a certain breed? I don't know if this would work, but if finances are a concern, could this man be a foster home? Don't rescue groups normally cover vet expenses for the foster homes?

They do cover expenses...….I had intended to do that. I went to the Blessing of the Animals last October to help such an organization at their table, while waiting for my foster dog. At the event my pup found me, and now we are a family, fostering is a terrific idea though. Thanks for the compliments, he is a very special little guy.

Most of you that are concerned about rescues probably already click on these two sites every morning.

They do cover expenses. I really respect people that foster dogs, however I would never be able to foster myself.
I know myself, and I'd end up with 12 dogs and get booted out of The Villages.
Fosters are Very Special People, they fill a crucial need, and I admire them greatly. :eclipsee_gold_cup:

Please contact the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County at 352-793-9117, hsspca.org/adopt or visit their shelter Mon.-Sat. at 994 CR 529A in Lake Panasoffkee. They have a variety of small and large breed dogs and all adoption fees are $125 for a neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, de-wormed dog. During July they also have a reduced adoption fee by $25 so dogs are only $100! e hope your friend finds a great companion soon! Thanks for caring!

when you foster, you have to show up every week with the dog for him to sit in a pen and be shown to people who are looking to adopt.

I don't know if you were referring to a specific rescue or not. But not all rescues require their fosters to do what you said in your comment in case someone were interesting in fostering. Florida Dachshund Rescue needs foster families, but do not require you to sit in front of Pet Smart or anywhere else.
