We plan on visiting HH towards the end of August and
would like some hotel recommendations.
I've narrowed it down to the following 4 hotels and would like some feed back if you have stayed in any of them.
Hampton Inn on HH Island
Holiday Inn Express
Holiday Inn Beach House
Hilton Garden Inn
PS If $$$ wasn't an object I would stay at the Omni
or the Radisonj
Thanks Kevin

My only experience is with Holiday Inn Beach House...great location and Tiki bar...went to brunch there one Sunday 2 yrs ago I think...hallway to dining room smelled like vomit and was filthy...dining room was clean and food was just okay...convention was leaving the property and had no regard for anyone in the parking areas of inside the hotel. Dunno know what the type of crowd - convention or tourist - is there in August.

neither---the kids are back in school
Eating out can be a big expense. Getting a Villa that is a short walk to the beach is a pretty good deal.

For a great burger go to Gruby's Deli. I had a cheeseburger there 5 years ago and I still have not found another that compares!

If you like breakfast make Hilton Head diner a stop. Their banana foster pancakes are fantastic.

I will respond directly to your question, rather than provide restaurant comments, alternative places to stay, or other irrelevant responses.
The Hampton is mid island. Most of the "tourist area" is south island, about 5 miles away.
Holiday Inn Express is close to Coligny (south island) and center of tourist area, as is HI Beach House.
Hilton Garden Inn is off-island, about 15-20 minutes to tourist area.
Having lived on HHI, I would chose the Hampton (mid-island), as it is close enough to Coligny, but not in the midst of this congested area. Less partiers likely there also. But as was mentioned, crowds should be lighter by then.

Hampton Inn is $150/nt plus tax
You could probably get a Brigantine Quarters 2/b 2/ba Villa, walk to the beach, be close to Caligny, inside Shipyard Plantation, close to Sea Pines for less then $1k for 7 nights. If you are just learning about Hilton Head it's a good way to begin.

Thank youI think it's one of the most beautiful places I have ever been much like the villages but far more expensive especially if you get a golf membership.
Do you bike, fish, kayak? Each harbor has something different to offer.

What about restaurants? Are there any privately owned or are they, like The Villages, predominantly chains and fast-food?

The restaurants in Hilton Head are 10 times better than here. Independent owned restaurants with Chefs. Great Italian , fish (amazing oysters, Asian and Continental. If you decide to go message me and I will get a list together for you.

Tom absolutely great restaurants. We go to HH for a week every year. Ombra Cucina is outstanding. The wine list is amazing and not the standard large markup. There is an Irish Pub that has amazing prime rib on Thursday night. I am getting hungry!
