View Full Version : The Villages stopping spraying for mosquitoes?

I heard today that The Villages are stopping the spraying for mosquitoes. From what I heard, it has something to do with the residents of Fenney wanting to get their area sprayed also and The Villages couldn't because of an environmental issue, so, due to their complaining, The Villages has decided to stop mosquito spraying altogether.

Anyone else heard of this happening? I would hate to see it stopped.

Did you get that from the District or just in a usualrumor discussion?

It was in a discussion (men don't do rumors, at least the men I'm around don't).

This forum is how dialogue is established on people seeking information. If you have info on the topic I posted, great, let everyone know it. If you don't, don't.

I don't think it was The Villages that made the decision to spray or to quit spraying for mosquitos. It is the county that does the spraying.

Agreed.

Especially as your post was couched as a question; not a definitive statement.

Let's keep this forum friendly and helpful.

Sure, blame it on Fenney residents. I have not heard a single complaint down here regarding spraying and it has never been a topic on our social media groups or resident website.

Even better than coming on here in search of "facts", a simple call or email to Bruce Root with the Sumter County Mosquito Control would answer your question. 352-689-4400. And, not to spoil the ending, I did, and learned the following: "We have a mosquito trap in each district of the villages that we set every week, three traps have to trap away least 25 mosquitoes over night to warrant spraying per Florida statue chapter 388. When the traps catch enough we spray that area".

That's very nice of you to say. Thank you!

One follow up to the earlier info from Mosquito Control:

"When the traps catch enough we will spray the area, if we continuously were to spray eventually the mosquitoes would build up a resistance to the chemical and with only so many chemicals out there that we can use. it would be detrimental if that happened."

So, when "Snowbirds" aren't around, the new target for negativity will be anything related to Fenney? Guess it makes sense ---to some.

Does that mean that Snowbirds with homes in Fenney are a double negative?

Serious question, not a comment nor an innuendo: has anyone noticed an uptick in mosquitoes in TV lately?

No and we live by the swamp. (nothing political intended) ;):)

BUT there is a lot of water caught in places after the heavy rains we have been having. I bet there are pockets of them. Wise of the skeeter getters to set traps so they know where to spray.

I have not. But, this is prime mosquito season, and given the amount of rain (and standing water) it would not surprise me if there was an increase.

Thank you for the info; I had no idea who to call. That’s the great thing about TOTV; some friendly people respond with what’s asked, with others, not so much....

I'm not really sure how not spraying in Fenney...would affect the main part of TV.

It's not like mosquitoes can fly that far.

During the past few days in De La Vista South, it has become almost impossible to go sit in the yard without getting swarmed by mosquitoes in evening, I don’t ever remember them being this bad before. I realize we live in an area with plenty of marshland do these areas get sprayed frequently?

I’m a mosquito magnet and I can attest to the uptick in activity recently. Can’t even use my new patio 😥

Ditto and can attest to the same. I'm also a Fenney resident and can attest to having seen and heard mosquito sprayers down here even since this thread was started back in July. Haven't seen or heard any lately, though, and given the bites around my ankles from last night, the traps should be full or they need to move the traps. :)
