View Full Version : Mosquitos are sprayed in The Villages as they have been in the past.

I was tired of the thread that said otherwise.
I am also aware that there are those who think bug spray is not good for us, and I agree to a point, but mosquitoes carry harmful stuff and last year they carried a virus that harmed fetuses, not that THAT directly affects our population but we have a lot of children and grandchildren visiting.
Thank you to the poster who researched this issue of how and when mosquitoes are sprayed and found that the criteria was a certain amount of mosquitoes caught in traps set for that purpose and checked regularly.
I think that because of the rain and standing water in places we have had more mosquitoes recently.
Bottom line....no one has stopped spraying mosquitoes in The Villages and don't blame Fenney.
I am so tired of Fenney being maligned.

We were just visiting St. George Island. They must not spray for mosquitoes. We would take our dog out in the evening and get eaten alive. I guess I must be lucky because in my little patch of paradise the in The Villages we have not been bothered by mosquitoes. We also have a very healthy anole population! The little critters are very efficient at controlling mosquitoes.

We were in the midwest recently and their mosquitos were out in force and the size of mockingbirds (well a bit of an exaggeration on size). I much prefer being here and haven't noticed any bugs....other than some butterflies here and there.

Anyone who has spent time in northern Canada or Alaska... just laugh at complaints about mosquitoes in Florida.
Anything less than 90% DEET up there...is like candy to them.
How to survive the worst bugs ever (https://www.macleans.ca/society/life/how-to-survive-the-worst-bugs-ever/)
Finding few mammals, the winged demons mercilessly harass the victims they do find. Caribou herds actually dwindle when the bugs distract them from eating or migrating, and caribou fawn, drained of blood, endure death by mosquito.
And it's not getting any better.
Why the Arctic's Mosquito Problem Is Getting Bigger, Badder (https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/09/150915-Arctic-mosquito-warming-caribou-Greenland-climate-CO2/)
There aren’t a lot of animals for them (mosquitoes) to eat in the Arctic, so when they finally find one, they are ferocious. They are relentless. They do not stop.

We used to joke when I was stationed in Alaska that the mosquitos were like small F4 jets.

I’ve been dying to ask what the heck I’m doing wrong at my house that I’m attracting so many mosquitoes?! I get eaten alive every time I go outside. And we too have anoles all over the place. We are at least 2 streets away from the closest lake and I’ve got citronella plants potted on my porch, but those darn things find me the minute I leave the house.

Look for anywhere that collects water.
Old flower pots, low spots in the yard, plugged gutters, etc., etc.
I'm guessing though, that one of their favorite places which is old tires...aren't laying around in the yard? :D

I'm in Pinellas and I can't go outside at night even for a minute or I'll become a human pin cushion for those damn skeeters. The ones over here are as big as geese.

My problem isn't mosquitoes (we surprisingly noted the LACK of them when we moved down here 18 mos ago) but those dammed tiny biting flies especially at LSL.
