Now that the news of Guy Freri's shutting down is out, I've seen a few suggestions about what might work in that location. Given the available size of the space, what are some realistic suggestions for something that hasn't already been done here.

Me too.

For a long time, you had to be in the Miami area to find one...but they've been moving north.

On my Costco runs to Orlando...I always include a stop at one.

Quite frankly though, and what may be its biggest advantage here, is that I don't know how they can stay in business...serving such great grilled chicken at the low prices they charge.

So far, the one that has really peaked my interest is UNO. Great deep dish with a full bar and entertainment. I also like the idea of Real Seafood, but not sure that The Villages would allow that since taking over the Lighthouse. What else is missing from LSL? Someone also suggested a Boston Market for good comfort food.

You've got Gators, Cody's, Too Jay's Deli, Sonny's BBQ, Johnny Rockets for burgers and shakes, VKI and Thai Ruby for oriental, City Fire for the smokers at the outdoor bar, Red Sauce for Italian and The Lighthouse for seafood as well as Pinnera Bread and Baskin Robbins. Not to mention, there's a pizza place and a Subway. There a hole for a good Mexican restaurant, but there are so many of them in and around TV, might not work.

Why do you all want something there that you can get anywhere? We have chains up the yin-yang around here and they're great, when you want to go out once every two months because that's all you can afford if it's going to be $50+ with drinks and tips. What I miss, living in the suburbs, is a decent falafel joint. That's highway driving for me and traversing a very congested downtown New Haven area, currently. That's the closest one, and arguably the best in the state.

We have a sub-par Indian restaurant here, and a couple more each around 15-30 minutes from home - better quality, but still you're looking at $40 for dinner for 2, minimum. I'd jones for a proper Middle-Eastern/Syrian place.

$8 for a hummus plate with a falafel ball, home-made tahini, some hot cardamom tea, freshly heated pita to dip into the hummus. Or maybe a shwarma - with a 4-bite chunk of home-made halavah with pistachio for dessert.

Or how about a real barbeque joint? Pulled pork, ribs, more ribs, live music, fried chicken, catfish, some more pulled pork, mac & cheese, maybe even an old fashioned pig-roast on the back deck once a month as a special...honey-drizzled corn bread...

If anyone's ever been to the Dinosaur BarBQ, you'll know what I mean.

I do not agree. Many repeats succeed, simply because many people like their food and prices.

Businesses SUCCEED because of popularity and repeat business that is tailored to the market.

What a few people want and would frequent, although excellent, may be too expensive for this market to keep afloat. That doesn't mean either side is WRONG.

Many who read this forum are realistic. I would take good chains over the pseudo country club fare here in SOME places. I love Cane Garden, not because it is amazingly good, but because it fulfills our expectation for food and price. It is decent food and dependable food and always nice help.

I agree. We have good taste but dine out more frequently many of us, since it is often a pain to cook for two. And since we dine out more, we aren't looking for something expensive...many of us.

And so the market here reacts to the prevailing wants.

It ISN'T because we don't all know what is excellent, but a LOT of us truly are careful with money, even those who have a bit of it.

Is it still in business? The dinner menu isn't showing;

Lucky Pelican Bistro | Fresh Seafood Everyday (http://luckypelicanbistro.com/)

We aren't missing real food, just not the kind some people want. One of our favorite places; Bob Evans that had really good things is taking things off the menu. Some people never tried them because they don't serve booze or it is too "hinterland" for some and not a place you'd find steak or lobster or a variety of seafood. I think the reason that the kind of places that some posters want, are not popular choices because of price.

Hinterland is a fantastic word. I really need to get it into my vocabulary.

I feel like people claim they want something a step up from Culver's but then want $10 entrees. Then they say "This rubbery ten dollar Chicken Fantastico Supreme from Applebee's was terrible" etc etc. Or "Why do they use a microwave?"

It should be an inside market with a bakery, a fish shop, a wine shop and local brewery selling, an Italian deli, a cheese shop, a flower shop, fruits and veggies and a chocolate shop and coffee shop. Everything would be in its own little area, with bistro tables to enjoy a drink with some of the fare bought there. Our own little Faneuil Market. With outdoor seating too. Let's go Metro.

TV is no longer a small community--its approaching 150K population--looking @ the backgrounds of people who live here, CEO's,0-6 retired military, big city pensioners, selling big houses up north and buying a house here for cash--they can & will support a restaurant , thats worth supporting--The Rose Plantation is doing OK--Lots of houses selling in excess of 500K--

a real mistake is trying to pass off junk on people who know better-that's what Guy and Honest John's did

"Hinterland" is not my word but one that a poster on this thread used earlier.

I think people who put down others because their taste in food is different are very unrealistic. The market will choose the winners. It has in the past and will again. I am sure we have among us people with refined taste, but most of them also like "ordinary" things and will whip up scrambled eggs for themselves on a busy day and find them yummy.

I very much dislike equating people who have been financially successful with those who know a good peanut butter sandwich from a bad one. Or only "DINE" at expensive places. Most successful people have been around and know their way but not all are going to spend a lot of money unless it's warranted. It is my experience that monied people are often frugal and careful. That is probably one of the reasons they got "monied".

Some restaurants in TV offer unauthentic food, in particular, not heavily spiced regardless of whether it should be.

So, a good option may be food typically prepared in a mild flavor, if you will. Some examples would be Polish, Czech, Ukrainian, and such, with warm, delicate spices, like tarragon, parsley, marjoram. Much like French country cooking.

Now that the news of Guy Freri's shutting down is out, I've seen a few suggestions about what might work in that location. Given the available size of the space, what are some realistic suggestions for something that hasn't already been done here.

The restaurant that would work is McDonald’s. Let the arrows fly for you fast food haters. My case: The location isn’t the best. Whiskey John’s (or whatever) found that out and Friday’s gave up too. McDonalds is obviously the only answer for that spot. Don’t laugh they would bring some really great coffee at a price that all can afford. Of course, it won’t happen but it would work.

Price is the factor in many restaurants success here. I don't know if you should describe it as "cheap and quick food". I would say decent and reasonably priced food, not birthday and anniversary occasion priced food.

Mmmmmm. Love Peter Lugers! Have eaten there many times. Photo Gallery (https://peterluger.com/photo-gallery/)

Especially liked the "doneness" legend on the menu which I don't remember verbatim but it went something like this:

Rare -- Cool, red center
Medium Rare -- Warm red Center
Medium -- Warm Pink Center
Medium Well -- Warm Gray Center, no trace of Pink
Well Done -- We do not guarantee the tenderness of any steak ordered well done.

We still buy Peter Luger's Steak Sauce. Publix and most supermarkets carry it.

How we would love a traditional steak and chops restaurant in The Villages.

There was a Bill Knapps on High St. in Worthington. It was always busy and the food and desserts were great. Families filled the place every evening. The chain then sold and the new owners from out west decided they were smarter than the previous owners. They soon filed bankruptcy.
I get the feeling that the new owners/management bunch at Bob Evans are going to take that chain down sooner, rather than later.

I've seen lots of folks suggest major chains like Brio, Bravo or Cheesecake Factory. Remember these are all corporate stores and the all look the same inside and out. These all might be good if they were taking over something the size of Barnes and Noble. In my opinion, the limited square footage will drastically limit the choices for that location.

I know there is a market for it here. Just look st Bonefish.

Hope I’m wrong about BlueFin, but judging by their track record, I’m not holding out much luck.

It’s Florida, people. We shouldn’t have to go to a chain (Bonefish) for a great seafood dinner, but they are the only ones in town.

A question for the group: Do you think the type of restaurant that might thrive in a location in or near one of the squares would be fundamentally different from what might do well in or along the commercial areas slightly outside of TV?

From what's being written, I get the impression that the size of facility available is an issue, as well as the spending habits and tastes of the general population of TV for an enterprise that might cost more than the current flavors. As TV expands, with what seem to be "fancier" (for lack of a better word) and more expensive homes, I'd think there would be enough folks with tastes, and money for more upscale (read: more expensive) options.

I'm getting away from making it another restaurant. Given some thought to what another poster said earlier and I cannot remember who it was .... a good, really good coffee shop would survive there. After all look at Panera's and Starbucks, people love sitting and watching the world go by while enjoying a good coffee and something to munch. They have outside seating, full plate glass windows where you can watch the world, and easy parking from Barnes and Noble.

My otherhalf and I will often go into town and just get a coffee and a muffin/something else and just sit and chat for a while before getting on with our life. When we go to SS we stop at First Watch and have a coffee and something, and when we are on our way to Sam's we stop at Brooklyn Bagel. The new establishment does not have to be a restaurant.

The one thing we never do is look at how much it costs! It's our together down time.

P.S. Since posting earlier this morning I think this location could be a good place for the younger generation. Turn it into a wine/liquor/coffee bar. Have musical entertainment - plenty of very talented musicians here - and stay open later. But, for any of this you have to have an owner/manager on site. Get to know your clientèle, be there to greet and meet, make people feel welcome and happy to be there. With the right management it could become the IN place for the younger Villagers moving here. Unfortunately, it takes money and time to establish something of this nature.

There are so many options of eatery’s that would satisfy Villagers tastes.

Portillo’s
Pei Wei
PF Chang’s
Cheese Cake Factory
Smokey Bones
Alexander’s Steak House
Chugs Tex Mex

And the list goes on!

OK maybe we think outside the box. Let's do some research and come up with a place called "Back Home" There are meals that we used to enjoy when were live up north our out west that we can't find here. In SE Mich. I enjoyed gyros and coney dogs. Folks from Chicago loved their deep dish pizza. Fish chowder or crab cakes anyone? What regional favorites do you miss that we could add to the menu?

I'd love to have an authentic Mediterranean/Lebanese restaurant here. In lieu of that, we could really use a high end coffee shop with real baristas who know how to do a pour-over or correctly work a French press. There isn't one anywhere in TV. I shouldn't have to travel to Orlando for a proper cup of coffee.

Got a big smile out of me with the Bob & Ray video; remember them fondly...but of course, I was just a kid. And Bill Knapp had a restaurant in route 41 in Whiting, IN. Had many good meals there.

Personally, I'd like to see a "mom and pop" diner there; as per some of the suggestions earlier. If we had an Aunt Fannie's (only much cleaner) like Ocala, it could possibly make it.

Most chains are not going to that tiny footprint. Their kitchen alone would take up half the restaurant. Fenney grill is doing well, not because it’s the only game in Fenney, but it’s run well.

Maybe developer will take over the spot, and bring back a thriving restaurant, for couple of years.

It’s a key location, but only a non corporate would sink money into such a tiny space. Our youngest manages three sports bar restaurants. When he was here he looked at a couple of sites, as he said there are endless possibilities in TV, but space is key.

Awesome idea. I definitely am hoping to see restaurants that are -not- chains. Except pizza. I'm pretty sure we won't ever eat pizza again in Florida. Huge mistake thinking we could stomach it. Six different pizza joints in 3 different parts of Florida, and not one of them was edible by any reasonable standard.

Now if we’re talking Pizza, “Giordano’s” is fantastic. They have several locations in Orlando. Fire oven baked to order Chicago style Pizza. They ship nationally.

I’m not even a big Pizza fan, but theirs is like no other. Takes about 45 min to bake. So we often call ahead while running errands in Orlando, and it’s served shortly after we are seated.

This population might not be patient enough.....but their pizza is FANTASTIC!!

Sonny’s is BarBQ, but I’m our opinion not good at all. Oakwood is just a short drive and great BarBQ at a great price. I’m not sure another BarBQ spot would make it inthat location.

The Villages is not ethnically diverse in population, so the idea of a Eastern or Indian spot would be a hard draw. Personally, I’d love it. But lots of meat and potatoes, hamburger folks here.

We are hoping that Blue Fin down in Brownwood has real, fresh, FLORIDA, seafood. We are really tired of cod and haddock frozen. But that seems to be what the Great Lakes, midwestern, northeastern residents prefer. So that what we have an abundance of.

09-18-2018, 10:39 AM
It's here! Went to OAKVILLE last night. $11.99 full BB Ribs Sun thru Wed for September. No live music, (who really goes to a BBQ place for anything beyond BBQ?) otherwise they have all of the above. Search TOTV about the many Oakville vs Sonnys threads.

It’s “Oakwood Smokehouse” and yes they are great!

This is what I think should happen at Guy Fieri's. The bar should stay. All the tables should be cleared out.

Sounds like “Urban Market” in downtown St Petersburg. What a fascinating place. You could spend all day there. And grab a pasta dis, deli sandwich, or acai/ frozen yogurt bowls loaded with fresh fruit.

Sort of a “Fresh Market” with unusual premium brands of shelf foods and fresh fish, seafood, meat markets with beautiful flower market and bar.

Unique and a fun place!!

Yes you do. Coffee shops do GREAT all over the world. Every country I have been to has always done well with coffee shops.
