For me, most tattoos are an emphatic no because they are just so, well, permanent. Like arm-sleeve tattoos that may look ok while wearing a t-shirt and a pair of jeans, but look perfectly awful while wearing a strapless wedding or evening gown, imo.
But to each his own.
And yet I am ok with permanent makeup (which, by the way is really not that permanent) such as lipliner, eyeliner and eyebrows.
And I think tattooing for breast reconstruction cancer patients is truly incredible. I watched a documentary that showed the tattooing of areolas on a woman that was so realistic it was hard to believe that it was ink.
I also understand when some have the name of a deceased loved one tatooed as a permanent memorial.
So I guess I am ok with "selective tatoos".

Two senior citizens are lounging at the pool. One extends his arm, revealing a fuzzy image and says, "What do you think that used to be?"
Maybe today's tatt inks last longer, but when one gets old with saggy skin, your body art may end up looking like a nasty infection.
Then again, you'll be easier to identify when the memory care unit puts out a Silver Alert about you.:a040:

People's bodies change and so sometimes it ends up looking like a smudge. Some of the artwork is amazing though. I know some people that went kind of crazy with remembrance tats after 9-11, I just wonder, do you want to think about that every time you see it on yourself?
I went to a NASCAR race years ago at Martinsville and the guy we sat next to was a local who had tats all over of his dogs (Dobermans) that had passed on through the years. Great guy!

Personally, I don't have any and will never get any. Some tattoos look becoming, but most are not, IMHO. I don't care what other people do so long as it doesn't harm anyone else so knock yourself out.

Perhaps a tramp stamp that says "son". Words can't describe how proud I would have been if my Mom had one.

I have no tattoos and plan to keep it that way. Many I see are overdone and hideous.

So far way more nays than ayes. Not a surprised from the “silent generation”. I was people watching in a regional Mall recently and the Tattoos frankly just didn’t appear attractive to me. I did read an article a few days ago where the author said that tattoos were more accepted today than ever before. Arguably, I could see where he was probably correct. As we say, to each his own.

I have two; one a Razorback on my right lower leg, the second an eagle on my right upper arm. Shortly after I got the one on the right arm, I had to have rotator cuff surgery and dang if my Doc surprised me by being able to work around the tat; didn't mess any part of it up.

Well coming from someone whose idea of good art is 100% symmetry my view of tattoos is do you need help buying a bar of soap ? As I told my children when confronted with this issue was how may fortune 500 board of directors have tattoos ? Then we get into the tattoos of those people are hidden in discreet places. Then I would ask why ? Well I don't know who won but neither child got one.

Dumb question, but why does Danica Patrick's tattoo have to be air brushed out when she is doing a photo shoot?
No tattoos for me; I don't like needles. I advised my nieces who are in their 20's to be careful about where they get tattoos as far as job interviewing goes. Both of them are in the health care field. I don't know if hospitals would hire a heavily tattooed nurse or physician's assistant or maybe they would? I know at my office there are not a lot of visible tattoos showing.

As to jobs/careers....our daughter in law has a few and had to wear clothing that would cover her's while at work. So my thought to all that "what's the point?" Except their answer might be..."because I can!" My point would be...they're permenant and as one poster pointed out---they fade with age and sometimes look "smudgey". Then the idea of being "cool" has lost it's luster. IMHO

Voting no on a tattoo for me; but if I did get one, it would be just my name
'cause sometime in the future someone may need to know who I am when I can no longer remember.

I find service tats for men completely acceptable and look ok. Never cared for them on women. I have seen some beautiful women just ruin their bodies with tats. Small, discreetly placed ones are alright if that's your thing but large ones that cover half their arm are just hideous in my opinion.

The summer of my 3rd year of college I was in a horrible car accident. Had surgery to place a steel rod in my femur, and a plate in each of my radius and ulna on the left arm. Long scar down my thigh from the surgery. And that was in addition to another long scar right next to it from years before this accident. In Junior High, a car fender ripped my leg open after I veered my bicycle off the sidewalk because some guy threw a lit salute at me.
While at the beach after I got out of the hospital, a lady and her young son (maybe 7 years old?) walked past me. The boy said something like "hey mom, look at the lady with the scar on her leg." It was pretty red, and still had the marks from where the staples were pulled out post-surgery, so it looked like a big long wormy insect crawling up my leg. Indented.
I figured - well obviously people are staring, and now this young kid has pointed that out to me. So if they're going to stare, I should give them something pretty to look at.
I got up from the beach, gathered my things, and high-tailed it to the nearest tattoo parlour. Got a butterfly hovering over a flower, on my upper thigh just a couple of inches away from the leg hole of my bathing suit. Since I'm not really much of a beach person and I don't wear "short shorts" this spot rarely had exposure to the sun. And so it is almost as vivid and colorful as when I got it. In 1983.
I have one other one, a little heart with flames coming up from the top and three drops down from the bottom. A bleeding, burning heart, representing passion and compassion. That was a botched job, so the heart is all crackled. The image isn't faded at all though, merely defective. I keep thinking I'll get it properly filled in some day but it'd cost around $100. I only paid $50 for it, back in 1991.
That's all I have, and all I'm interested in having. I like seeing some of the gorgeous artwork on some folks. If it's properly inked and the person takes care to keep the sun off of it, it isn't likely to fade much at all. If their weight also doesn't change drastically over time, it won't look too much different from when it was first put there. It really depends on where on the body it's put, how much sun exposure you have over many years time, and the quality of the tattoo.

Two occupations poor spellers/grammarians should avoid tattoos and neon signs. Every day during my commute on the 27X Express Bus from Brooklyn to Manhattan, I'd look for the large, neon "Psichic" sign in a storefront window.
