Rain drenching the lanai

Since I moved here this summer, we seem to have afternoon showers nearly every day, sometimes it's only a few drops and other times it comes down in buckets. What can I do to help keep my lanai dry? If there is much of a wind the rain blows in and even sprays the sliders. Trying to figure out the best way to improve my situation! Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks all!!

Many people enclose their lanais for that very reason.

If you have sunscreens put in, they can help keep the rain out as well.

It’s wise to have waterproof cushions, etc and furniturings that are water proof. Those afternoon showers are a daily part of Florida summers.

As dotti105 said " Welcome to Florida Summers". Some years will be better than others but your lanai will always be subject to getting wet. The solution is to have it enclosed at which time, according to the Sumter County building inspector, you will then have a Florida Sunroom and NOT a Lanai.

TIp for the sliders: spray em with Rain-X.

As to keeping rain out, you can either add windows, fully enclose the lanai or install a birdcage. The easiest solution is to learn to enjoy the rain. You may get some drops on you but that’s pretty harmless. On the plus side, it is cooler while it rains.

We had the same problem. We installed outside motorized screens that we put down when it was raining or to protect us from the sun. That reduced or eliminated a lot of the rain depending on the direction of the rain/wind. We used Dress up you windows and they did a great job 352-431-3181 locally made and installed. If you leave the sliding glass door from the house to the lanai when you enclose it there will be no change in your tax bill. When we did it we raised the floor to the level of the house. We also used dual pane glass and the houses air conditioner keeps the area at the same temperature as the rest of the house when leaving the sliders open.

I could never figure out why people move to Florida and them enclose everything. Enjoy the fresh air. Buy some cheap towels. Just saying.....

You could build a birdcage, then add a canvas covering from Sunshine Awnings. That is what we did, and we love it! Lowers the temp under the covering by 10 degrees, and makes the space usable when raining - all while maintaining the nice outdoor feel!

We left the sliders, raised the floor, dual pane glass, but our tax bill went up about $100 per year. We can afford that. Our lanai was very dirty and dusty when we purchased the house, which was 4 years old. I cleaned it but told my husband that it would be the last time I would do it. He said let's enclose it so we did. We can use it no matter the weather and we can get the air without mosquitos.
