I hope this link works. It is interesting to see the "live" action.
I think the babies are due to hatch around March 9.

I got it to work! Thanks. Does anyone know if any eagles ever came back to the preserve near Liberty Park. I heard they left when the tornado went thru in 2007.

That's cool and will be especially neat after the eggs hatch out. However, I got a little dizzy after watching it for awhile with the tree swaying in the wind...lol Thanks for sharing!

Ohiogirl:
I haven't seen any eagles in the preserve since the tornado. Doesn't mean they're not there, though, as I only drive by. The area remains appropriate for the birds, but there aren't that many of them around to begin with.

Thanks, Barefoot. I'm putting a tickler on my calendar for early March to start looking for the babies! The slide show of Momma and Papa Eagle on the same web page is also very nice. BTW, my Mom and much of my family hails from Norfolk, VA. I sent my Mom the link. Thanks again.

Yes, still in egg. BTW, it is HE who is laying on it. They take turns, but it has been Daddy this afternoon, including when he got up and you could see the cracked egg. This is soooo exciting. He is really moving around a lot, panting and sometimes tightening up the nest to keept he eggs warm!

I was surprised when someone said on here it had hatched because it was laid several days later - I thought maybe it would be a few more days for it and then a few more days for the third one. I can't see the interaction with the school children since I"m here at work so I'm looking forward to that when I get home. I'm lucky the webcam itself isn't blocked and that I can watch it...it does feel a little voyueristic to watch however but so amazing.

It was just about this group that want's to ban bird watching because it disturbs mating in birds. Their logic though, is that there is an increase of senior citizens who bird watch because of the ease of the practice. The group said they have scientific proof that the mating habits of birds, ie display of plumes, dancing, strutting and so forth, turns the seniors on sexually. This group who has this website said this has caused a worldwide increase of naked birdwatching!!

Some of the info on the side bars says that the nest is the size of a queen bed and probably weighs about 800 lbs....can you imagine the size of that? It also said that it could be some time before the baby eats because it had eaten the yolk of the egg. When it's time the parents will gather food and break off little tiny pieces so it can eat. It says they eaglets are about 3 inches long and weigh 2.5 ounces when hatched. I am just totally amazed at this...

I hope other eagle cam watchers just saw the eaglet!! The eagle stood and appeared to be feeding the little one. Gently putting it's beak (or bill?) up to the eaglet's tiny beak. We watched something being brought into the nest last night by one parent. Not sure what it was. The eaglet has much more control of its head. this morning. Still wobbly but much more stable than the few glimpses I saw yesterday. Fascinating!!

You are welcome, Pturner! And thank you for letting me know the first egg had hatched. (I was in the laundry room with the dogs avoiding the tornado. I should have taken my laptop with me. Note to self: Stop listening to the weather radio!)
I am so glad you are all enjoying the Eagle Website. I must say that I find it very addictive. When the mom stands up and I see the fuzzy little head bobbing around, I feel rewarded for the time I spend.
The second and third eggs should be hatching any day now. The incubation period for eggs two and three is shorter than for the first egg.
Eagles mate for life. They are both acting like proud parents. Nature is so wonderful.

The dad provided lunch today, looked like a huge fish?? It is strange to me that the babies' "undeveloped" digestive systems can process raw fish. I watched the mom feed the babies, so cute to see their little fuzzy heads bouncing around.

All 3 have hatched. Feeding now.
The largest eaglet seems to push the other two babies out of the way to get more food. But the mother makes sure they all get fed.
Some facts I've learned from watching the website.
Apparently the nest is the size of a queen-size bed! Eagles mate for life. But in this case the mother eagle is around 12 and was previously mated to an eagle who was killed by an airplane. She has had several broods of eglets with her new mate. He seems to be doing a good job bringing her food and new straw for the nest ... I guess she'll keep him around.
Back to the website. So cute.

The moderators have to constantly reassure viewers that the eaglets are well and safe and haven't starved or fallen out of the nest. Apparently this mother eagle is well experienced and has already successfully raised 13 eaglets.

All three are thriving. The youngest just looks like it's getting less food but that's because it is younger. They are so cute to watch, especially when they wobble to the edge of the nest to relieve themselves. I am so impressed with the parents and how caring both are. We should all take lessons from eagles.

I agree that it is hard to watch the third little eglet get "ignored". But that is just our perception. Every day someone expresses a concern to the moderators that the third baby is starving or dead. And the moderators assure us that all babies are well fed and cared for. Apparently this mom has already mothered 13 eaglets successfully and she knows what she is doing.
And Redwitch is right, we should all take lessons from the eagles. Both parents are very devoted, and all eaglets are doing fine.
I think this site is the BEST! I can't start my day without checking on the eagles. :mornincoffee:

Every day someone expresses a concern to the moderators that the third baby is starving or dead. And the moderators assure us that all babies are well fed and cared for. Apparently this mom has already mothered 13 eaglets successfully and she knows what she is doing.
And Redwitch is right, we should all take lessons from the eagles. Both parents are very devoted, and all eaglets are doing fine.
I think this site is the BEST! I can't start my day without checking on the eagles. :mornincoffee:
All three look quite healthy. It's fun to watch them develop. Their claw feet are getting definition, as are their beaks. Their dark feathers are coming in. I love to peek in every day and see their progress.
This morning I caught one of the eaglets giving big yawn, right into the camera. It opened it's mouth so wide you could practically see it's tonsils. (Do eagles have tonsils?)
I love the site. I'm in awe. Thanks again, Bare, for this treasure.

The three eaglets are being banded at 9 AM on Wednesday, March 3l. They remove the eaglets from the nest to band them and then return them. Since the eagle nest is located 40 feet high, this should be interesting.
Apparently the parents fly overhead during the banding process, but are not aggressive. And the parents readily accept the eaglets back in the nest.

I'm shocked how quickly they've grown. I'm also impressed with the parents. The eaglets are too big to "brood" (be brooded?) but the parents take turns sitting on the side of the nest and guarding those toddlers. I haven't witnessed a poo over the side of the nest by the eaglets yet though!!

Oh, I looked for that information and didn't see it. Thanks. I still check the site at daily. It is facinating! I wonder if they are scared before they take their first flight. I bet it's exciting to them when they get up the courage and actually fly from the nest for the first time. Maybe they don't remember it later though, much like we don't remember our first steps.

I just spent three days without a computer, driving from The Bubble to Canada. When I arrived and logged on to the Eagle Cam, I swear the eaglets had doubled in size! I actually thought the large one was the mother eagle for a minute because it was flapping it's wings.
Apparently the eaglets will practice flying in the nest, and will actually be flying by the end of May. However they continue to return to the nest for food. It should be fun to watch as they start their first expeditions.

Has anyone seen if they have posted the gender of the eaglets? I scrolled throught the info on the side and didn't spot it. As one is noticably larger, I am wondering if that one is male and the other two female.

I think the eaglets were too young to determine gender when they were banded.
Adult male eagles are smaller than females. I was thinking the puny one is a male, but perhaps it was just the last one to be hatched so it may be a bit behind in growth.
Following is a great suggestion from Jerseyboy2. Probably everyone else in the world except me already knows this ... but I had no idea you could enlarge stuff this way! Very helpful.

I've seen all three eaglets today "nest flying" and exercising their wings. The moderater calls it Wingersizing. Where they lift off and flap their wings but don't really travel anywhere. The next step is branching, which happens before they get the nerve to take their first flight.
Even after they start flying, they return to the nest to be fed. That should be fun to watch.
I always worry that one of the eaglets will get bumped out of the nest by accident. Apparently one year an eaglet did miss a branch and land on the ground. The parents didn't return the eaglet to the nest, but they did continue to bring it food.

PT, I'm so addicted to this web site. :mornincoffee:
The nest is the size of a queen-size bed. However the wing span of the eaglets is now five feet. So there isn't much spare room when they all start wingersizing at the same time. It can be quite comic.
Yes, all three are branching now. If you look on the right hand side of the eagle cam page, there is a link to Camellia branching on May 15 and on May 23. They should be fledging (taking their first flight) by the end of May.
It will be exciting to see their independence, but sad to see our little eaglets disappear from our lives. (They will still return to the nest to be fed for a month or two, so we can enjoy their coming and going).

The eaglets do seem to copy each other's behaviour. I guess that is how they learn. Soon they will be watching the parents hunt so they can learn to provide for themselves.
Sadly, there is a 50% mortality rate for eagles from one to five years of age. Some never learn how to provide for themselves.
This eagle cam has given me more of an appreciation for eagles and nature. The parenting skills and devotion of the mom and dad are incredible.

Kathie, it is not your imagination. The whole set-up is different from last year.
These eagles have nested each year in a a particular tree, but this year they decided to build a new nest. Probably Mrs. Eagle has been nagging for a while about needing new accommodations. As a result of the new nest location, they had to move the camera and equipment and do some upgrading.
Same two eagles as last year, who raised three eaglets successfully. Just a different location and camera angle.
The eagles on this site already have three eaglets hatched. However I don't like the site nearly as much.

I spent so much time last year watching the three eaglets grow and learn how to fly. It is beautiful and fascinating. I've learned a lot from the Blog beside the Cam which answers ongoing questions.
The mother eagle is a terrific mother. She pulls in her talons around the babies and always makes sure they all get enough to eat. The babies are never left unsupervised. The eagles take turns hunting for food, and sitting in the nest or in a nearby tree. They are both very good parents.

I am so, so sorry to tell you this news:
Norfolk Botanical Garden:
This morning an adult bald eagle was struck and killed by an incoming airplane at Norfolk International Airport. It is believed that this bird was the female of the nesting pair from Norfolk Botanical Garden (NBG). The strike occurred sometime between 8:30 and 8:50 a.m. These eagles were well known through the Norfolk Botanical Garden Eagle Cam provided by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), Norfolk Botanical Garden, and WVEC, and have been at NBG since 2003.
According to Stephen Living, VDGIF biologist, and Reese Lukei, a research associate with the Center for Conservation Biology (CCB), “We are fairly certain that this is the Norfolk Botanical Garden female eagle due to her physical characteristics, size and the fact that she has not been seen at the nest since the strike.”
This year the pair of eagles has produced three chicks at that nest site. Biologists with the VDGIF, CCB, and the staff at NBG will continue to monitor the nest and are working to ensure the health of the eaglets.

I have been watching these eagles and their offspring for two seasons. I usually log on to the website every morning but missed it this morning because I'm very busy right now in Canada getting relocated to Lagoon City, Ontario.
What a shock. I cried when I read FoPAA's post. I feel very connected to this pair of eagles and their offspring. Sadly, the dad can't hunt and protect the nest at the same time. I have my fingers crossed that the eaglets will be safe. I wonder if the biologists will get involved if the eaglets aren't getting enough food.
This particular female eagle who is missing and presumed dead lost her first mate to a plane mishap. Then she remated with this male eagle, and they've been raising families together every year.
I know there are wars and other terrible things going on in the world, and atrocities being committed. But still, I'm sad that momma eagle won't be coming back to the nest.

RIP, Momma Eagle. I'm so sad to hear this news.
Admittedly I haven't been watching this cam much this year and 2 days ago, I logged onto it and was shocked how much the eaglets have grown. Such a beautiful sight.
Because of the education I have received about these eaglets for the past 2 years, I've been able to see things I would never have expected to see or know. Yesterday, around 3pm, I was driving in Fruitland Park on 441/27 near the Griffin Park, and I swear there was an eaglet walking amongst the trees on the side of the road. It was a large eaglet, much like the ones in the cam but you can almost tell from the shape of the head and body, that it was an eaglet. It was very exciting to see it and I watched to be sure it wasn't hurt or in jeopardy of being hit by a car. All was okay so I continued on my journey. But I was very excited to see this.

I hope WVEC shows some pictures of the eaglets at their new home in the Wildlife Centre of Virginia. I wonder if the male eagle will mourn, like elephants do. I'm sure the male eagle will find a new mate. The female that was just killed lost her "husband" in 2002 to a plane. And she remated ... following instinct I guess.
Apparently she nurtured at least 19 eaglets to maturity. I do love the nature webcams. Now I'll have to satisfy myself with the Decorah Cam and the ones in California, Santa Catalina Island.

I don't know if he'll mourn in the human sense. But in my mind, he was all set to feed the eaglets and work with his mate and do what nature intended until the babies left the nest. He'd have to be confused and "lost" (I don't know a better word) for awhile. Then instinct will kick in and he'll go about his life. It still makes me feel sad.
I suppose his new mate will have her own nest and this nest may be abandoned. What a sad day. You are my hero for turning me on to that silly webcam Bare. I have had so many hours of enjoyment out of watching, sharing and talking about the eagles' nest. Thank you.

The father eagle returned to the empty nest at 2:14 with a fish. He spent 15minutes in the nest just looking around, trying to figure out where his wife and kids went. So sad. The male was with the female when she was killed, but he managed to get out of the way of the plane. The Admins said that the male spent some time this morning looking for the female. At least now we know that the three eaglets are safe from predators and will be sure of enough to eat.
The male eagle will probably find another mate, as the female did in 2002 when her male partner was killed by an airplane. Perhaps we'll see the male return next year to the same nest with a new mate. I hope so.

The Norfolk Eagle Cam had an expert biologist on the website later this afternoon. They are receiving thousands of e-mails and questions on the blog. The expert was explaining the decision to move the three eaglets to the Wildlife Center of Virginia. Many people were criticizing the decision to remove the eaglets since the dad was still trying to feed them.
I found the explanation very interesting. Many people thought the biologists should have left one of the three eaglets to keep the dad company. However the expert explained that one eaglet would be very vulnerable to predators when the dad was out hunting. And that we think the eagles are feeling human emotions of loss and sadness and confusion. But in fact the dad will adjust to the situation in a few days, and before long, he will probably find a new mate. And possibly even return to the same nest next winter.
Other people thought the biologist should have left all three eaglets in the nest because the dad was still bringing them fish and trying to provide for them. The biologist explained that the eaglets will soon double in size and require huge amounts of food to stay healthy. It really takes two eagles to raise a brood, one to hunt, and the other to protect the nest. By himself, it would have been impossible for the dad to defend the nest against predators plus provide an adequate amount of food.
As the eaglets grow larger, if they aren't getting enough food, they woud become very aggressive and fight each other and possibly kill the weakest eaglet. They would become weak and malnourished. The biologists felt the most humane solution would be to take the eaglets to a sanctuary. They will be in a "simulated" natural situation, and will eventually fledge and learn to fly in a 200 foot enclosure. The biologists will even provide fish tanks to teach the eaglets how to fish.
I'm glad that today is over. I spent waaaaaay too much time on the Norfork website. It was so emotional seeing the eaglets removed from the nest. And also when the dad returned with a fish, and the kids were gone.
By the way, the plan is to get a webcam up and running of the eaglets at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. I'll post the link here when it happens.

The three eaglets were moved on April 27 to the Wildlife Center of Virginia after their mother was killed by an airplane. The Wildlife Center has managed to get a webcam operational so we can see the progress of the eaglets. Even tho they're in "captivity", the Wildlife Center will do as much as possible to simulate natural conditions.
The picture quality is very grainy now, but it will improve.

Lots of action at the eagle nest. Last year the female eagle was killed by an airplane and 3 eaglets were left behind with only the male feeding them. They were removed and were raised at the Virginia Wildlife Center. The male kept coming back to the nest with food but was confused and appeared upset when he couldn't find his mate or eaglets. Well, now we have high drama at the nest. The male was recently courting a female but she disappeared and may have died as well. Now there are two new females who appear to be fighting over the male but this morning the male mated with one. It is the male who selects the female and they will they mate for life. The original female was this male's mate for many years before she was killed. The eagle cam is active so it's possible we will have some eggs soon and once again witness a reality show like no other. All this drama is played out before our eyes. Thanks for the update D's Mom. I was so disheartened when last's year Mother Eagle was killed by a plane. It was so sad. But I was happy they relocated the three eaglets.
The widower Eagle now has ladies lined up vying for his attention. Much like Katie Belles. Also, the Management has added new cameras which will provide even better coverage of the area around the nest where the eagles often perch.
The "powers to be" are considering dismantling any nests built too close to the airport, because they can pose a threat not only to the eagles, but to plane safety as well. I somehow doubt this will happen, especially once eggs are laid.
I saw the nest but that wats all. Isn't the mother supposed to be sitting on the eggs to keep them warm? Where is she? Out having her nails done?

In my previous note about an intruder eagle and the male defending the nest I didn't mention that earlier in the day the intruder was chased by the female and she had an aerial fight where they locked talons in mid air. Spectacular
sight. These eagles are fierce in defending their nest and now that there are so many eagles the quest for territory is becoming a problem and the competition is increasing. Reminds me of the political arena. See pictures below of the encounter.

There was another intruder this morning. The eagles are vigorously defending their territory.

bk I didn't see the confrotation; yesterday was the first day they had sound and it was amazing to hear the eagles calling out to each other. Evidentially the intruder (female) has made several attacks trying to take over the territory. The resident female hasn't been seen today. She defended the nest vigorously so I'm praying that she is OK. Lots of drama.

I checked in with our eagle this morning. It looks like there aren't any eggs yet and the male has found interest in a fourth female.

The Norfolk male eagle started mating with eagle #4 about three weeks ago. And they mate a lot, despite which there are no eggs yet. The female is only five years old though, so it may take another year before she produces eggs.
BK, did you see my post today on "eagles and Owls"? I found two other great cams that have either new babies or eggs about to be hatched. The Decorah Cam is an especially nice one.

No, Bare, I didn't see your other posts. I'll find them though. Thank you. My brother, his wife and my niece are visiting from Nashville, TN, this week. I showed them the Virginia eagle cam this morning. They loved watching. My niece is in seventh grade and her mom thinks it would be awesome for her school to follow the cam.

Today was the one year anniversary of the death of the female eagle while she had 3 eaglets in the nest. The male was lost without her and tried to feed the eagles but it takes two; they were rescued and placed in the Wildlife Center of Virginia and eventually released. The female and male were mates for many years and were loved by many. The female was an awesome mother and mate and she is missed. Eagles are monongamous and mate for life so this year there is a great deal of drama over who will mate with the male. Here is a tribute to the female Lady Legacy.

Thanks DM. Lady Legacy was a beautiful eagle.
The male eagle chose a "new" mate last September. Sadly she was killed by a power line in January 2012. Since then he has been following his instincts to build a nest and produce offspring. He has been regularly mating with three different five-year old eagles, but no eggs have been produced, perhaps because they are too young. The three female eagles take turns coming to the nest for a couple of weeks, and then a new one appears and the other one disappears. I even registered for e-mail alerts and they e-mail me every time anything exciting happens. I think I'll submit an application for "My Weird Addiction".

Thanks for the tributes. Mr. and Mrs. Eagle and Family of Norfolk Botanical Gardens will never know how beloved they were by us people fans.

It appears that our beloved eagle nest at Norfolk Botanicle Gardens will be torn down. This is a debacle! The chance of an air strike is low and the Norfolk male will continue to build a nest there since they have nested there for many years.

I've spent countless hours watching this Eagle Cam. As DM Has pointed out, the male eagle will continue to nest in the area he knows as home. It's a sad decision.

I agree that the decision is not a very thought out and intelligent one. Nature will do what nature does. I will miss the cam as I really enjoyed watching the Norfolk one especially.

Every year from January to May, I would be glued to the Norfolk website. The Site had excellent moderators explaining eagle behavior and educating the viewers. I will miss this excellent Eagle Cam. I've also enjoyed the Decorah Cam and the Hornby Island Cam. But the Norfolk was my favorite and I'm sad to see the nest removed.

I'm sad to see it go, too. Thanks to Bare, I was glued to it as well. May the Eagle families there continue to soar.

I will miss the eagle cam also. I sincerely believe the eagles will stick around though, just no cam to watch them. I believe that removing a few nests is not going to make them go away. I was at the gardens last March and it is a most beautiful place, just too perfect for the eagles with the lakes and forests and gardens. I bet we hear of a new nest being built. There are so many other cams to watch, all you have to do is Google eagle cams and a lot of sites come up. Norfolk was my favorite also and I will truly miss it.

I think you're absolutely right ... the eagles will stick around, that is their territory, and they will build another nest. Hopefully this time it will be further from the airport, and the Norfolk Cam will be reinstalled.
Last year was fascinating because the male eagle, who had lost his mate, then proceeded to mate with four different young eagles, who seemed to take turns spending time with him in the nest. However none of them laid eggs. We were all hoping for eaglets this year. And I still haven't given up hope!

Has anyone else seen a very large dark brown bird that we've seen eating along side the road on Buena Vista between 466 and El Camino and then again soaring over El Camino Dr.? Saw it last week and hope it is an eagle or at least an osprey.
Have seen several hawks, but this is not a hawk. Much larger.

Maybe a Buzzard. They are usually seen in flocks while feeding while Eagles are mostly solitary when feeding.

On Christmas Day while passing the Amelia Pool I had a positive sighting of a beautiful Bald Eage soaring over the pool area. First one I have seen since moving here on November 1st.

Since the Norfolk nest closed, I've been looking for another Eagle Cam.
CFrance told me about this one.
Norfolk was top notch because of the on-going chat and Moderators answering questions.
But this site satisfies my eagle craving.
I apologize if it's already been discussed.
It's new to me, and I'm delighted. :posting:

This Eagle cam is awesome. Now I'm watching the hummingbird cam and this one, looks like I won't be getting much done.
Here's another eagle cam I use to watch a few years ago on Catalina Island. I like it because you can hear the ocean in the background.

I was watching an eagle cam in Southwest Florida where the eaglet is now quite large and about to fledge. I stopped watching when the first born eaglet constantly pecked the second born, much smaller eagle until it died from starvation. This was the second time I witnessed the death of an eaglet after it was a few weeks old and finally I had to stop watching. Nature can be quite cruel. Somehow the Norfolk eagles managed to feed their young because the male was devoted to feeding along with the female and they made sure that each of the eaglets got fed. Evidentially that is not always the case for many reasons.
