I am a side sleeper and have been dealing with an agonizing pain in the rim of my ear for the past year or two. The pain frequently wakes me up. I never mentioned it to my doctor - just lived with it.
Last month I googled "outer ear rim pain" and came up with: Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Chronica Helicis
(CNH) also known as Winkler’s Disease is a very painful inflammatory disease affecting the outside of the ear (the helix). Located at the point where the rim of the ear meets the pillow, it frequently produces a sore, yet benign lump in the cartilage of the ear.
After reading about 3 different cures -- surgery, steroid cream, and alleviating all pressure on the ear, I decided to order a product made specifically for this called Pillow with a Hole. It is made in England, cost $60 plus $5 for shipping and $20 for a pillow case. The pillow has a zipper so that the "fill" can be adjusted (I needed to remove some.)
If you google P.W.A.H - you can see the website. I received the pillow about a week ago and I see a major improvement. I highly recommend.
Those of you who are creative and can sew could probably make your own or modify an existing pillow for far less money.
