Best plants for our lanai

We have our lanai furnished and have had acrylic sliders installed which nicely controls the weather. Now we are thinking about adding some plants. Does anyone have suggestions as to the best plants to put in a south facing lanai? I have seen an abundance of plants at Home Depot, Sam's Club etc. Are these the best places to purchase them?
