Always been curious...

When you see the regular line dancers at the square, a song starts and they all break into a dance. How do they know what dance to do? Is the a line dance associated with the song? (All songs???) Is there a person in charge who picks which dance to do? (I can’t say I really see happening.) Something else?

Please advise...this has been bugging me for a long time. :)

I think it’s like a thermos bottle. You put In cold liquid and lt stays cold. Put in hot and it keeps it hot.
How do it know?

Seasoned line dancers seem to know the steps used to the tune being played. Oddly enough I met a great longterm girlfriend while learning how to line dance. Ya' just never know!

I really thought that line dancing died when disco died, until we moved here and saw it revived (or maybe it never died here).

I like jokes and stories as much as anyone, but I really am hoping to get an answer to my question. Anybody? :)

Each song has it's own dance. I have attended beginning line dance classes a few times and have been taught 3 to 4 songs/dances per class. By the time I am on the third dance, I have forgotten the first dance.

I think polka needs to be unoutlawed. Then, you line dance haters would have something else to complain about.

Yes there is a dance that depending on count. If you go to utube you can see the dance steps, and the song title that goes with.

You will find groups that take class together stay on the squares together. They also pick which entertainments pairs best with line dancing.

Those who just dance with a partner usually pick which dance pairs with the count of the music

Once you go to the Line Dance classes and learn the steps as well as the dance names, the dancers associates the songs to certain dance routines. If you are interested in learning, which will help you understand, start with the Absolute Beginner (AB) classes. Once you are comfortable with learning the steps, start taking the Beginner classes. It's a lot of fun and great exercise for your body and mind. Hope this helps.

Each set of steps (routine) is to a specific time (3/4, 4/4, etc.). The time of the song determines which routines can be used. Usually the dancers know the routines and will follow whoever starts first. No dialogue necessary. Some songs, like the Electric Slide, has its own routine. Some songs actually tell you which steps come next. Once you learn the step patterns within the routines, it’s pretty easy to follow along

Take a class for absolute beginners at one of the rec centers. Go to VillageLineDancers.com (something like that) to find classes. After that, you can do some of the slower, easier dances at the squares. Generally speaking one of the instructors will be leading the dances. For example, Sandy leads the dances at Lake Sumter Landing at around 5 on Tuesdays. It is difficult without any experience, yes.

Whoa - I thought it was the same dance over and over again. Forward, back, turn right, big spin to the left and repeat. If you are very advanced you can toss in an extra 360 degree turn at the spin part.

Line dancers often arrive in groups (or packs) and if the music doesn't have a particular dance attached to it, the leader of the pack (strongest/oldest/best/most seasoned dancer) decides which choreography to use...and all other dancers faithfully follow. It's all a bit like watching lemmings rush over a cliff ;-)

Except for the one designated to be half a beat behind because they are watching the others' feet and reacting.

There's usually a leader that really knows the line dances and can choose one quickly. Also, many dances go to many, many songs, so as long as you have similar timing in a song as the original it works. So most groups have a small group of dances they do most frequently as well as a few well known dances such as electric slide and cupid shuffle..

I’m thinking, the timing and rythem of the song, has the specific dance. First ones out there set the style.
That’s the way I’ve observed it. Hope that helps

My wifes memory, like my own, is not what it was, but play a song/tune and she will know what dance goes with it. She must know hundreds of the routines
I suffer like many from 'leftitis' and never even mastered 'The Stupid Shuffle!':icon_wink:

My posse has favorite nicknames assigned to the regular square line dancers. Wonder if you can vision this one - the "flight director". What's your favorite ?

I think I know who that lady is. Then there is the lady that most people call “water bottle girl” - but I call her “Long Tall Sally”. To each his own. I think it is fun.

For the record, Line dancing is not my favorite form of dancing. However, it works well for those who don’t have a partner to dance with them. In The Villages, that appears to be a good number of people. Line dancing is cool as long as they leave room for others to dance too. Two people who can really dance together are really really cool. Occasionally you find a really really cool couple who really know how to do a dance on the Squares. As my grandson says “sweet”.

Most of those songs don't actually have a specific line dance associated with them. These line dancers will line dance to ANYTHING. It was really jarring when we went this year, to see people line dancing to some normal rock and roll songs. I thought - why in tarnation would someone ruin such a good song with that silly distraction?

A lot of music is especially awesome to line dance to. But you gotta draw the line (pun not intended) somewhere. Mine is rock and roll. You just don't DO that to Proud Mary, OKAY?

I don't line dance, but why the heck not line dance to rock 'n roll? I bet there's a line dance to fit most tempos. Kudos for anyone getting exercise in any form.

Boo! You probably don’t like them doing the electric slide to Mustang Sally, either!
