View Full Version : Anyone fit two cars and a golf cart in a 2 car garage?

We’re considering upgrading a bit mainly for a larger 2 car garage as we have the 1.5 now. The 2.5 would be ideal but it is a little over our price range while we keep our place up north. I realize that there are some differences in the sizes of the 2 car garages so we are looking at the larger ones, oversize if possible. We have a Subaru Outback and a Jeep Wrangler 2 door. The Subaru is used mainly for driving down from RI (damn dog) so the cart golf would be behind the Subaru. We will be doing all of our measurements before we commit but I was just wondering if others are doing this and how it is working out.

We are always looking at garage sizes on the different houses. I believe one of the largest standard 2 car garage is in the Citrus model. It is a pretty reasonably priced house for a designer.

I did a search on the Citrus and that is a large garage. Thanks for the info.

We can't do it because ours is stuffed with tools but I have seen it done with the golf cart parked sideways in back.

Bruce, I own an Iris in Fenney and have a 2 car plus golf cart garage that I extended out 15 feet. I can easily fit our 3 cars plus two bikes plus all my tools and a workbench in the garage.

No interest in a golf cart at this point.

When considering a home here, remember our garage is also our basement. Everyone has things we need to store other than cars. We have hobbies and holidays.

In my opinion, the trend is that most people want a 2 car garage and a golf cart garage. Buying a house with only a 2 car garage will seriously affect the ability to resell the house. Also, you may be able to cram a golf cart into a 2 car garage, but it won't be very functional.

I would save for a model with a two car plus golf cart...you won't regret it

I have a rental home with an oversized garage. Over size in depth and a couple feet in width.

I have had my extended cab Tundra, a car and two golf carts in that garage. The one behind the Tundra was sideways. But they all fit and you could still walk through it.

My golf cart is parked sideways in the back. It works for us because we only use it for golf. I have to take the car out every time we need the cart.

EDIT: SORRY! I misread your OP. I thought you already had a 1 1/2 and wanted to enlarge it. Now I realize you are looking to replace the home not just expand the garage :) so my post is really not relevant.

We are in the final construction phase of enlarging our garage from 1 1/2 to 2 car. About 75% done. Putting 2 carts + car in it would be very difficult due to the fact the way the A/C system is in the back of 1 side of the garage. If the A/C wasn't there it could be don one behind the other. I REALLY had preferred a golf cart garage but due to the property setbacks there was no room to do that. It would have been a lot cheaper for sure.

Here are some photos of the process: Dropbox - Garage - Simplify your life (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3lo1waqnpnjn09q/AAB6REezoLQkhkDee-6GrKxaa?dl=0)

Just to add ..... get LOTS of bids. Had over $10,000 variation in bids over 4 contractors.

The size of the second car has to be taken into consideration.

We have an extended 2 car (4’ extra on the right side) garage.
We fit 2 Lexus SUVs and 2 golf carts.
The only problem is you have to move the car to get the cart out.

The only reason we bought our house was it was the model we wanted and has a beautiful lake view.

OMG!!! That was a lot of work for 3 feet looking at the pix. Excellent lesson for folks. Buy a big garage in the first place!

Gracie, when we purchased we chose a 4 bedroom model with a stretched garage and one of the bedrooms is considered our basement LOL. Our garage is full and at this point I wish we had an 8 car garage but that ain't gonna happen. Back to OP, there are lots of people down here parking golf cars sideways behind a smaller car in 2 car garages.

Actually it's 4 feet! :D We were just looking for a 2/2 and never gave the garage a thought. That being said, anything that would have had the 2 car garage would have been MANY thousands more than just adding on as we did. That was my only complaint with this pace but now it is resolved and I can spend what's left of our life without my wife hearing my b1tching about the garage! :D

All kidding aside thanks for sharing those photos. I found it interesting on how they expanded your garage.

I stretched a 3 car garage on the new house, I can park two SUVs, a sedan and a 4 seater golf cart. We wanted space for storage and the vehicles. I have seen the cart parked sideways behind a car in my mother in law’s village.

Same here...golf cart sideways in back, a Kia Sorento in front of it and Beetle in the other slot. Since we use the golf cart only for golf, not a big deal to back out the Kia to retrieve the cart a couple of times a week.

Garage 23 ft wide 19 ft deep with 18 ft door. Fits a Subaru Forester and a VW Golf and a golf car side by side, Cannot open door to full width but at least a couple of feet between vehicles.

I think I would look for the 2.5. I have two cars and park one golf cart behind one car. Have to push cart to the other side of the garage if I want to move the one car. This car has very little use so not a big problem. However my garage might be a little wider than a lot of models as the front of the golf cart touches the side wall. I also added 4 feet to my garage length so I could do this. Plenty of room left to walk in front of cars. I could park a second cart behind the other car but it would be a little hard to get each cart in and out.

We've been here 17 years. We have a Williamsburg with a Two car and kick ourselves all the time for not putting on a Golf Cart garage when we had the house built. We originally had a Buick, a Corvette and a Golf cart in the garage. Had to move the Golf cart out, back out MY Corvette, put the golf cart back in and go. Then reverse it when I got home. Pain in the neck. Go with a Two car garage (or three if you can find it) and a golf cart garage. You won't regret it! We now have one car and the cart and it's fine. We put in a row of cabinets to store all the "stuff"!

If you shop around, I am sure you can find a house with a 2.5 car garage in your price range. It just doesn't make sense to buy anything else if you want to park 2 cars and a golf cart.

You will end up getting multiple door dings on your vehicles . Simply because accidents do happen and unavoidable. Getting in and out of the vehicles plus the possibility of scratches from various objects.

Spend the extra save yourselves many headaches ...in the long run " Peace of Mind ".

Our garage is 4 extra deep. I put my suv and corvette in, then park my carts perpendicular behind them. All 4 fit fine.

Our top requirements are new, concrete/block house, fenced in/courtyard and a 2.5 car garage. We’ve shopped a bit and these houses are out of our price range while we still have our RI place. And since we have two grandkids in RI and another on the way in MA, no way will my wife agree to sell for a while. We did see a nice expanded two car veranda but the lanai faces south which from what I have read means sun most of the day. Thinking about stopping by at various times of day to confirm that. But then again if we did purchase the veranda, would we be looking for a 2.5 in a few years? Best bet might be to hold on to our 1.5 concrete courtyard villa for a while.

We have a two car garage and a golf car garage. We can fit two golf carts in our golf cart side of the garage and then two cars on the other side. Just be sure that your golf cart side is long enough to fit the two carts inside.

We have a Cyprus with a 2 car garage. When we first came her we had a Nissan Rogue and a Nissan Versa. I was able to get a golf cart behind the Versa sideways, but it was tight since have sold the Versa. Some of this depends on water heater and furnace placement

Brucenelson, to bad that you'll be looking for a possible VILLA but to find what you want you're probably getting into more money than you want. We don't have our house listed yet but we probably will in the next 2 weeks. We have a designer, a Lilac & we're probably selling it lower than any Lilac listed in TV. It'll probably be listed at about $309,000. I really don't think you'll find one lower than that. Sorry, I got off the subject. They're are homes out there with what you want but not knowing what you want to spend probably would be hard to answer you. Good luck looking for what you want. If you're moving TV & you get a realtor, I know for a fact that you can't barter with TV realtors. They won't budge on their prices. Good luck, Brucenelson!

Good luck with that one.

Contractors think a one and a half car garage is called a two car. Maybe you'll fit two golf carts in there and bump side to side when you move around it.

I would have loved to had a full two car garage space-wise I might, however you would never fit 2 cars through that door without banging into each other.

Can you go with 16’ wide but also go deeper? We went 4’ deeper. You can then park your cart behind or in front of one of your cars.

This is an interesting post. I purchased a house here in Belvedere, with an "oversized" two car garage. Well, It doesn't fit near what I had in my 'standard sized" two car garage up North. I wish I had measured first.

i passed a house with the garage door open and saw two cars in there with a golf car parked perpendicular to the cars, close to the garage door.
in other words, cars pulled forward and the golf car fit behind them!
of course, that would depend on the auto size...worth a try.
