How much time have you spent watching the Olympics?

I have seen some, maybe an hour or more a night.

Did you enjoy them? What do you think of the athletes?

I'm tiring of Lindsen Vonn. She seems to think she is the center of the world. Talented, but oh so tiring, and I'm not all that sure she was that sorry that her accident monkeyed up Julie Mancuso's run in the slalom.

I watch the hockey and some of the skiing. There is not much else on to combat the Olympics. Too bad. The other stations lost quite a few viewers.

I have to agree that Vonn is not sorry. But I do agree with the announcers that the strong contenders should have the course to themselves instead of starting during another competitors run. They should have given Mancuso until the end of the round so she could have rested up and got her game back on.

First few days they were on TV I didn't have much interest but since then have taped all shows and have watch most. Really enjoyed the snowboarding, ice dancing, hockey and side by side ski races.

:agree: During her interview after the incident, she did not seem at all sorry. I thought it was my imagination...thanks for confirming my feelings!

The winter olympic games are my favorite of the two. I think the whole venue is more scenic and interesting and enjoy watching something different. I mostly follow the hockey action and always like to catch the curling competition which strikes me as a cross between pool and chess. Amazingly I get bored with the x-game type competitions like snowboard half pipe and the ski aerials. I still like watching the alpine skiing like the super G and the downhill (traditional skiing events) and the biathlon. Hard to believe it's all ending on Sunday. Hey! Any curling clubs around The Villages? :icon_wink:

If there is a curling club there, I'm guessing you'll find Barefoot there.

I really do enjoy watching the winter Olympics as in my young and foolish days I did make the final try outs for the Olympic ski team. I was not good enough to make the team in either event, but got to ski against a few of those who did. The talent today of these great athletes, training regimens, equipment and the ability to measure time has really upgraded the quality of the events.

However it seems that the amount of advertising on NBC evening coverage is 50% of the broadcast time. It has really spoiled the venue IMHO.

I love almost everything about the Olympics and regularly record every night's broadcast. I usually start watching it an hour or two after it starts so I can skip through commercials and events for which I have no interest.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but one of the things I like about the olympics is the "Up Close and Personal" segments about the individual competitors. I also like the spots that they do about various aspects of the home country that help us get a glimpse at some of the things that make it unique.

I disagree about Lindsay Vaughn. I think she has nothing to be sorry or apologetic for. She was racing hard and had an accident - something that is part of the sport. She did nothing that required an apology. I can understand Mancuso's frustration with having her run disrupted but thought that she was acting a bit too much like a diva - as if she was in gold medal contention were it not for that ... she wasn't. On her second attempt she was maintaining the same pace that she had on her first. This was not enough to get her into medal contention.

HOCKEY ..... it's better than an NHL All-Star game because the players are really playing to win instead of giving a show for the fans. Last night's Slovakia-Canada game was outstanding.

Ha, ha. I wish. I can't imagine what it would cost to maintain four sheets of ice for curling. :cold:

I couldn't decide on which pattern to buy so I bought both!

When and where is our first meeting of the local chapter?

Do these pants make my butt look big or what is! Is my suggestion for the name of our local chapter and I nominate Judy for President.

All we need to go with the pants are hats like this :jester:

There is no way I can get excited, not even a little bit, over a Olympic hockey game staffed by professional hockey players. This makes a mockery of amateur athletics. Really, now.

Think about it. Pros playing on amateur ice, with a straight face yet.

In these days it is very difficult to find an athlete in any sport in the olympics who is not a professional. They all are paid to do what they do. Some of them make a lot more than the hockey players. I have no problem with it. It certainly evens the tables from when it was the Soviet block professionals against amateurs.

Three things.......

1. The games were fun and I love watching the skaters, all of the different events. Probably cause I always had a great deal of difficulty skating.

2. Have to agree with Tony......the hockey game was fun...but they are professionals and that doesn't seem right. Just the same as with the summer games basketball teams.

3. Why on earth did NBC just cut off the closing ceremonies.......so we could watch Jerry Seinfelds new game show......beyond annoying. :grumpy:

What we like most about the Olympics:

1. Seeing coverage & becoming passionate fans of sports we never see - in the winter sports it's curling of course, we got seriously hooked on curling in 2006. Say it ain't so...no curling team in TV!
2. Fast paced exciting hockey games where play is like Stanley Cup finals. Letting the "pro's" play for their home countries was the right move.
3. Alpine ski events, particularly downhill & jumping/flying which don't seem to get the coverage they used to.
4. Skating races. Never knew this was such a contact/collision sport!
5. Luge & bob-sled races. Wow...impressive win!

What we don't like about the Olympics.
1. Losing alpine ski coverage to snowboarding events? We were unable to find any downhill race coverage at all? Did anyone actually see a whole Bode Miller run...live?
2. Too much time spent on background/human interest stories (and as usual, commercials).
3. Too many snowboarding events - too much coverage; is this really the demographic (teens & 20's) watching the Olympics?

Bring on the summer Olympics, the Greco-Roman wrestling and the water polo!

You are totally correct. I would also rather watch true amateurs but I don't believe there are truly any amateurs players left. As a fan of Toronto Maple leafs this is the only satisfaction I am going to get this year. I was in a win win situation. Two good teams fighting for the GOLD. :agree::agree:

Really enjoyed the curling matchs but also saw bits and pieces of many of the other events.

There seem to be many top athletes at both the Summer and Winter Olympics who are far from anything resembling amateurs. The cost of much of the Winter Olympic equipment and training for each individual Vancouver contestant could probably buy a nice house in the Villages.

What kind of bugs me is the nationalism I saw whenever I was watching something through the NBC lens. It also seemed heavily fixated on who would win the medals rather than who was doing the competing.

I agree Tony. The gold medal game was exciting but it's a bit like watching the NHL all stars. I'd like to see them go back to all amateurs although strict rules would have to apply in order to prevent the old soviet army teams and similar organizations from taking part.

I understand it was very good from my Canadian friends. Evidently they didn't have the NBC feed ?

You're right Jurek. Once we got to 10:30pm it looked as if the festivities were still going strong. We were enjoying it and would have stayed with it if the coverage had continued. Very clever comedy bit at the beginning when they spoofed themselves over the torch malfunction. It came off well.

Enjoyed the alpine skiing events the best. Having spent some time at both Aspen and Vail I was lucky enough to witness jr. national alpine down hill one year at Vail and another national downhill at Aspen. The speed these skiers are going is unreal. At Vail the course was on a trail that I had skied many times but for the race it was pool table smooth and sprayed with water to ice it up. At the bottom of the face a ski patrolman had a hand held radar gun and was clocking the racers. 82 mph was tops while I was watching and these were junior racers. Insane.

Boy, it is really evident that there are a lot of mixed tastes of what everyone liked or disliked about the the Olympics. That's good. Variety is what makes the world go 'round. I really loved watching the Olympics. There were some boring and repetitive events, like cross country and bobsled. It was exciting, however, when the USA won the 4-man event. I can't believe how many people like curling. To me, it's like watching shuffleboard. Okay to play, really boring to watch. And I'm Scottish. I love the downhill and slalom events and that last game between the USA and Canada was outstanding. I don't watch it except during the Olympics, but all of the ice skating events were fantastic. What a sour grapes Russian skater.

I don't understand what one writer didn't like about the nationalism shown by the NBC announcers. It's one of those times when I feel ultra proud of the athletes from my country, just as I would expect the announcer from my home town to be biased towards my home team. I wish the whole world could be run like the Olympics. Cheer for your side, but be respectful and friendly with the accomplishments of the rest of the world. And money( at least in theory ) is not what drives them. It's for the love of the game and competition.

NBC did the same thing with the closing ceremonies at the Salt Lake City Olympics. I watched the closing fireworks up on the mountainside on TV, and also watched them out the window. Poof! The Olympics were over as far as NBC was concerned. Meanwhile the fireworks continued outside.

The local NBC affiliate received so many complaints that they showed the closing ceremony, including the entire fireworks show, 2 nights later.
