Are the cart paths also for walking, skating, dog walking, or are other trails for that?
We are taking the tour in April, so all I've seen is the DVD.
Thanks!

The multi-modal trails that run the length of Buena Vista and Morse (over a doz. miles total) can be used for walking, running, dogs, skates, bikes, and golf carts.
There are also sidewalks (at least south of 466) where you can walk. On these streets the golf carts have a separate (marked by diamonds) lane outside the sidewalk on the asphalt with the cars. In all the internal neighborhood streets you share the road with everything including cars but obviously it's just neighborhood traffic.
There is also one dedicate 'fitness' trail in Springdale (northwest section) which does not allow motorized traffic.

Thanks Russ, I was hoping that was the case. For some reason the paths and trails are one of the biggest attractions for me. We aren't golfers.
My husband is (almost) 56 and can be based from home. I hope I can get him to work on getting an account or 2 near there when we visit, so he can begin to make Florida his largest base eventually.
I just found this forum yesterday, and found the threads concerning developers, IRS, bonds, CCD (what's that?). Anyway, I know most of you have made peace with whatever happens. I am still just dissappointed that the issue even exists. I hope it doesn't make it an impossibility for us to invest there. We can at least rent there during winters til we decide.
Nice to meet you,

It is good to see that the cart path is also used for dog walking, many people have a problem with dog walking. I am a responsible dog walker......

I love dogs. I have a big girl, pit/lab mix, she is getting up in years but doing well. And, I have a ****zu/Poodle that is 2 and only 12 lbs. I was considering getting another small dog, but I read there is a 2 limit per household in TV. When the older one is gone I will get a playmate for Bear. I just wanted one that was younger that he could play with now, as his sister, Happy isn't as playful as he would like.
Do you have a fenced in yard? I hear they are pretty rare. Do many people have invisible fences?
Marjorie
PS wow my dog's breed got edited automatically, I guess those 4 letters are tagged as profanity.

Hi Marjorie welcome to TOTV!
We have Invisible Fencing and it has worked out great for us. We have a large lot that backs up to a farm there is a fence across the back of the yard and we had hedges planted along the side property lines. The Invisible Fencing was installed inside the plants and fence. Our girls have a great yard to play in and we have the convenience of being able to let them outside without a leash. We had never used Invisible Fencing before but I highly recommend it for TV.

What a great idea to use the hedges as well as the invisible fence. I'm sure it feels like a natural boundary to the dogs and gives you additional privacy. It would also probably keep stray or wild animals from coming in and hurting your dog. Backing up to an area with no houses is nice as well.

I don't really think a hedge would stop a wild animal. And obviously the elec. fence is of no use.
But I do like the idea of a hedge as a natural boundary which the dogs respect due to the invisible fence.
But this isn't really a dog thread. Let's get back to the original question about use of the cart paths.

I have no problem with dog walking. I used to walk Bart. My only request is that you keep the dog on a short leash. Some dog walkers let the leash extend to 8-12 feet. Anyone driving on a cart or on a bike does not know if the dog is going to make a sudden move across the cart path. It does not matter if it is one of the multi-access paths or the street cart path. It does not take much for an accident to occur. And both parties will be sorry.

I think it just calls for awareness of what is happening around you, for all parties. With dogs and golf carts each is going slow enough that it shouldn't be too hard for the dog walker to shorten the leash as the cart approaches. The cart can slow down and pass on the left side of the path. Skaters can come up so fast you don't know they are there, but they have never hit me on a trail. Bikers usually have a courtesy (in MO anyway), when they are going to pass you they say "passing on your left."
I guess I'll find out all about it on my trip. Can't wait!

This is why I think it should be walk against the golf carts. The carts go 19 MPH and when coming from behind you there is no time to react if the dog darts the leash by a few feet. If you see the cart coming you can shorten as suggested but most people that I know don't walk forward while constantly looking backward. It is simply not smart to walk on the same side as motorized traffic. If you'd like I'll provide over a dozen links to municipality and safety brochures that say just that.
Here's just a few:
From NY: http://www.safeny.com/peds-ndx.htm
General: http://walking.about.com/od/beginners/a/safewalkingrule.htm
NJ: http://www.northjersey.com/news/78294267.html
This one is bike on right walk on left: http://www.bike.cornell.edu/pdfs/ib_09.pdf
From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/pedbimot/ped/RxFlyer/Rxflyer2.html
This isn't a discussion. I doubt that you'll find a safety brochure that says you should walk on the right hand side of any road with motorized vehicles. Granted a golf cart isn't as fast as a cart but I'll bet they hurt when they hit you!
I hope TV implements a 'walk on left facing carts' rule.

I always thought that about bicycles when I was little. I was so scared a car was going to hit me. I still don't like riding on shoulders or in traffic. Of course bikes were slow when I was little. They can go very fast with the lightweight frames and countless gears. I had a revamped Stingray from my sister.

Hi Marjorie,
That's too funny about your poor little dog's breed name being banned. I find I can get away with disclosing my dog's breed if I spell it formally, as in Shih Tzu. I've been told that the correct pronounciation is "sheedzu". Don't know if that's true, but saying it that way does help keep down the (:1rotfl:). Have a great time in TV!
I have heard that the dog it none too happy about being called a ****zu, either.

Does anyone know how long this trail is? In Palm Coast we have all kinds of bike trails and we prefer to ride on a trail vs. a road with autos or golf carts.

Shih-tzu Shih-tzu, I'll remember to spell it that way--
Reminds me of a funny story. When he was a puppy, we heard of this place that offered to send someone to your house to work with you and your puppy. The girl was deaf and hard to understand, but she was good with dogs. Training went fine (except potty training, which they won't work on:ohdear: ) All went well, then we received or certificate in the mail Excited about Bear's first official accomplishment, I hurriedly opened it. Where breed was prominently displayed, it read " ****-a-poo...

Hey Marj, here's another free pass for your sweat little Bear. I've heard the Shih Tzu-Poodle mix called by the very cute name, shizoodle.

shizoodle, I like that one. It suits him. He's liver colored/brown with a brown nose and looks like a Shih-tzu but slightly longer nose.

when walking a dog on a cart path. Always face the oncoming traffic and keep your body between the cart and the dog. In an instant a dog can dart in front of a golf cart and it will be all over. Carts seem slow at 19 mph but it's not and some idiots think they own the path and may puposelly cut very close to you and your pet. Pay attention to your surroundings and stay off the dang cell phone.
Don't missunderstand me not many Villagers would do that but it only take one. Eventhough its perfectly legal to walk a dog on a cart path I wouldn't. We use to be sailors and sailboats have the right away over powered craft in open water. But who would be crazy enough to try and argue with a freighter. We use to call that the tonage rule. Tonage rules.
