and this is the proof....what action !!!
Emergency shipment of condoms headed to Olympic athletes
And, as if anymore proof is needed that a wild Olympic atmosphere permeates B.C.'s largest city, now there's an apparent condom shortage.
That's right. As you read this, an emergency shipment of condoms is desperately making its way across Canada to the West Coast city.
Health officials in Vancouver have already provided 100,000 free condoms to the roughly 7,000 ahtletes and officials at the Games. That's about 14 condoms per person. But as of Wednesday, those supplies started running dangerously low.
So naturally, the Canadian Foundation for AIDS research decided to step and make sure there were no hitches in Olympic action.
"When we heard about the condom shortage in Vancouver, we felt it important to respond immediately," said Kerry Whiteside, CANFAR's Executive Director. The organization assembled three large boxes of about 8,500 condoms, much to the relief of libidos at the Olympic Village. They're expected to arrive on Thursday.

Bucco,
I'm pleased to see how open minded you are to describe "socialized medicine" in any sort of a positive way. This is the thinking of a true visionary.
(After all, why would we proud, patriotic Americans want to see a whole slew of new European and Asian athletes, conceived in Vancouver, grabbing up all the golds in 2024, '28, etc.!!!)

Is there any word from Canadian Premier Williams, recuperating at his condominium in Sarasota after having his heart surgery in Orlando, about what he thinks of Canada's awesome socialized medicine program?

I think it highlights one thing that should never be outlawed. Whatever system ends up in place, I can imagine the pitchfork and torch crowd getting justifiably riled up if suddenly it were illegal to pay for private care.
If, for some reason, you don't agree with your insurance company today, you're certainly allowed to go get anything done that you want, out of your own pocket. This was *illegal* in Quebec until recently (if the service in question was one provided by the provincial system).

I still have half of my close friends that live in Canada. To me this shows when things get tough they want the BEST health care they can afford.
If I was Premier Williams I too would have done the same thing.

How many of us can afford to go out on our own to pay a 'better' doctor than our health insurance 'allows' us to choose from (if we have a choice at all)? I know I can't. By the same token, I don't begrudge those who can.

Djplong:
I understand that there are many people that are unable to pay out of pocket for medical services that are not covered by their plan. I am extremely lucky that I have the Cadillac plan and when I retire I will continue with the same plan with myself and my wife with the same coverage for $36 to cover us both. My friend that lives in Oshawa just outside or Toronto had a torn rotator cuff about the same time I did last year. I had both of my shoulders repaired about 8 months apart before he even got the OK from Canadian Health to have his operation. I believe they said this was an elective surgery and didn't require immediate response.
Many Canadians are Happy with their plans and many are not. I just want to point out that their plan by no means is the answer. We may have to fine tune what we have and make improvements. Socialist medicine is NOT
the answer.

I often wonder if the Canadians are really happy or they just don't know what their missing. Has there ever been a reliable poll?
My brother said that when people first get in the army they are frustrated with the long lines (chow, medical etc.) But after awhile they stop complaining and just get used to it.

Donna2: I believe it is a combination of two. This same friend with the rotator cuff problem took his son to the USA to have a back operation. His out of pocket cost was almost $70,000. His son was waiting to see a doctor for almost two years in Canada. Yet this same friend to this day defends the Canadian health care system. DUH
He is retired now but he was still paying almost at a 50% tax rate.
I was lucky enough to spend two weeks in Canada in November. I can NOT believe the taxes they pay on lodging, food or almost anything else.
Most of my friends told me they were happy with their health care. Now when I compare their Taxes with ours there is NO way I would trade.
NO socialized Health care for me.
