It was witnessed today via my security camera, a male and female riding around our neighborhood in a light blue older model Chevy truck, very quickly jumping out of the truck, ripping a hole in garbage bags to see what was in them and putting them in their trucks. They took 2-3 of our large, black contractor bags full of papers from the curb and put them in their truck. The truck had several bags of “garbage” in them

We called the sheriff and reported it. He agreed that the motive could be identity theft. Why else would they take papers?? Luckily, we shred all important papers and the papers in those bags was old catalogs, warranties and other office paperwork.

Please be diligent in shredding your important papers so they don’t get in the wrong hands. Also, please keep your eye out for this light blue, older model Chevy truck and report anything suspicious.

Thank you for reporting this. In Brooklyn I diligently shredded everything. Since moving to TV, I have to admit I've gotten lax. This is a good reminder for all of us not to get complacent.

For the life of me I can not understand how many scumbags would rather spend their time trying to rip people off rather than simply earning an honest living? It makes us glad we put our dogs poops in our trash for these scumbags to find.

We recently moved from The Villages to On Top of the World Ocala because it had become apparent to us that crime is definitely increasing there.
I had a personal check stolen out of the Dunedin postal station in May, and it was "washed" and changed to $1,600 which was drawn out of my account. The federal postal service became involved and I was able to recover that amount back into my account because this type of criminal activity also has been happening in The Villages so those authorities moved on it quickly.
On Top of the World has 24 Hour 7 days a week security guarded gates, and nobody and I mean NOBODY gets thru these gates without a pass !
Best decision we ever made, absolutely love it here !

Are you saying there is little crime in Ocala? I have lived in several true gated communities, they do little to protect the community, if they want in they'll get in via car, truck or walking. What keeps the garbage men from going through bags? You can't prevent it, if you put personal information in your trash it's out there for whomever wants to dig through it no matter where you live. I'll stick with TV.

I am glad you found a place to live where you feel safe and secure. TV isn’t for everyone. We live here because of the lifestyle opportunities. I presume TOW has their own website for community members, so we won’t be hearing from you anymore?

Glad you found a place that you feel safer to live in. Since security is the issue how do you feel about renting the land that a major purchase, your home is sitting on?

One other thing, how do you know that the washer of checks doesn't live in OTOTW? Regardless I'm glad you're happy but don't take any shots at the place we call home. There is crime everywhere but it only matters when it comes to your house. Take Care.

Sometimes they realize they made a big mistake and now they have to live with it.

Who writes checks anymore.

Plenty of people. I write one every month to my lawn care company, and my customers write them to me all the time for my company.

As to shredding personal papers, we have a shredder that’s probably 10 years old. A friend of ours showed us their new one that not only shreds, but kind of grinds paper up into really small pieces. It’s pretty neat. Maybe I should put that on my Christmas list.

It's called a cross-cut shredder. Very handy. They can get persnickety though - don't ever shred the maximum it says you can shred at a time. If it's a 10-page shredder, only shred 5-8 pages at a time, max. If it's a 12-page shredded, 8-10 max. Also, if you're shredding a lot of documents in a single sitting, stop every 3 minutes and pause for around 30 seconds before starting back up again. They are prone to overheating. Lastly, oil them once a month, even if you don't use them that month. To oil - use either 4-6 drops of machinist's oil right through the shred slit and shred a single piece of paper immediately after, or get the pre-saturated shredder oiling sheets, and shred one sheet monthly. Following all these steps will add another 1-4 years to the life of the shredder.

Thank you Happinow for the heads up. Light blue pick up? That sounds local.

But All of us.....don't forget that crime here will see an uptick until end of April. Crooks love to come to where it is warm for the winter. And gypsies should be arriving soon and professional beggars looking for a handout. Lock your cars, don't leave golfclubs unattended in public parking lots. Just be a little more aware of everyone and strangers who look out of place parked in your neighborhood. If you are not sure, call Villages Watch. That is what they do.

I just returned from swimming at Colony sports pool. While I was there, a gentleman discovered his bag missing that contained his wallet and keys. He had left it in the locker room. Then a woman reported that her high end flip flops were stolen off the pool deck!

Thefts of wallets and electronics occur in gyms all over the country. This is nothing new, and this is not an issue that The Villages has a patent on. I never take my wallet into a gym, even to put it in a locker.

Not sure I understand why someone would leave their stuff unsecured in a locker room, out of sight.

I agree. However, it’s more troubling IMO to think that a theft would occur from the pool deck! There is no where to lock up even your keys and ID card while you swim much less other possessions. You can’t swim with your keys!

Writing checks leaves you so vulnerable... putting your checking account number out there for any businessman or their employees to see. "Washing" is easy. I might write one a year. Banks are not so quick to refund your money due to fraud as credit card companies are.

There are more secure ways to pay bills, in my opinion.

Be glad you’re not some of the most horrific crimes were done in Kansas and of course other states as well.
