Is it the early morning ice that’s causing people to run into the gate arms? Or, are cars using the gates at Buena Vista/Hillsborough, Buena Vista/Collier and Morse/Hillsborough in a contest to see who can destroy the most gate arms. Road salt needs to be used or records are being broken. The only thing I can say for certain is that I haven’t hit one yet.

Be careful out there!

It was due to the snow. By the time you saw it it was all melted. No one has snowtires.

I really don’t think there is ice on the roads here in Florida. Think again

Not this far south of Gainesville. They may have some as you go up to Ocala and north of it. And probably only in the coldest part of the nights.

Gate arm damage is pure and simple.
Some just have poor judgement and many are trying to beat the gate without using their card....too cold or self appointed special person to not open the window.

The winter of 2010 here saw morning temperatures in the 20's. Somehow a section of sprinklers went off and a roadway got wet which turned to ice. Cars were spinning out.

Can you just imagine the roundabouts if they were iced over? The old carnival bumper car rides would be put to shame.

In some cases I think folks are just plain in a hurry and don't wait for the gate to go up as fast as they anticipated--or they tail-gate behind someone else. For others it might be glare of the sun OR it's being distracted.

I think you were being humerous in asking about the ice on the roads! LOL

Not at all. Seriously dangerous icing on the roads in the Village of North Dakota.

It’s the Sun. I almost clipped the gate at SeaBreeze early one morning. The sun was so bright if I would have not known exactly where the gate was I may have hit it.

That and .the gate didn’t go up right away, almost like it was stuck. Speed was not the issue, a runner was on the road so I had slowed well before the gate. Two cars behind me it dropped on their roof

Then there's those gates where the control box (where you scan the card) get taken out. The one at Mallory was like that recently. Either a medical event, or too much alcohol or sun/glare. Still that would be a feat if you're driving as you should.

The gate fixers must love this time of year; they sure are staying busy.

I hope the high-def cameras are catching the license plates of the people with no patience or brains that are knocking them down.

In Florida I think ice forms at about 50 degrees.

Cataracts and poor depth perception. Look at any parking lot down there. The car is sticking half way out, or they do bump parking. They keep creeping forward till they bump the car in front of them. Not kidding, I’ve had cataract patients tell me that’s how they keep driving when they shouldn’t. No ones taking their drivers license away.

There is what we call “black ice” and it is for real. Black ice is when it rains or even humidity on an asphalt road and the moisture and oil mixture causes a slick payment. About the gates... I see them down often but they do their job of slowing vehicles down as they approach an entry into a Village. It’s an important safety device when golf carts are crossing behind the gates. Some people (even when retired) can’t give up their fast paced life they lived prior to retirement. Slow down and smell the roses.

I forget. Is it gas or electric carts that can accommodate a plow?

I forget. Is it gas or electric carts that can accommodate a plow?

Electric has more torque at low speeds (torque being a good thing for moving snow), but the batteries run down fairly quickly pushing piles of snow and then you might start getting a malady called...'berm anxiety.'
