I went to the Pack & Ship in Spanish Plaines to send a Gag Gift to my brother in law in Wis. It weighs less than half a pound. I was told it would be a total of $37.00 to ship it, they would have to put it in a new box for $15.00 and a little over $21.00 for shipping. I went on Amazon and bought a new one for $15.00 and they shipped it free. Just a friendly warning. Len & Mary

:ohdear: I think that is how it works...... they give you a price and you say "yes" or "no". And I thought you were a business professional. Did all your customers love your prices? Did you hope the ones that didn't would go online and say "he's a Rip-off"? Your post sounds a little harsh to me. :ho:

Take it to one of the local post offices. It's a lot cheaper there and they offer the same quick services.

That does sound high, but it is really not fair to compare Pack and Ship to Amazon. Amazon ships almost everything for free, but they must be making up for it somehow.

I Didn't mean to sound so harsh you guys are absolutely right, $21.00 to ship a half pound package and $ 15.00 for the box, just sounded a little steep to me. Yes it is the cost of business. Just not my Business. Len

BRILLIANT! :coolsmiley: :coolsmiley: :coolsmiley:

(Maybe because after I read it I was thinking now that's exactly what I would have done (in a humble manner of speaking). LOL

As they say, there is always more than one way to skin a cat! (I never understood that expression and still don't -- why a poor cat?)

When we lived in Texas I always used Kinkos to send Fedex. I also used them in California. There was always a certain store in Texas that always said my packing was not acceptable and would not ship without repacking. It was expensive and YES, it was a rip off. I only used them twice. It’s true...boxes for priority are free at the post office shipping would have been about $8. Some store managers do try to improve the bottom line at the customers expense.

They treated you quite harshly, you have every right to respond in kind.
Good for you and Amazon.

Never had any problems at the Pack and Ship in Pinellas, they never 'forced' another box, and always provided me with several cost options, including USPS.

There is definitely a cost for convenience. A high cost for sure in this case.

Forget Amazon, that is Apples and Oranges. There are a number of missing details. WHAT was being shipped? breakable? WHERE was it going to? HOW were they shipping it? Did you TELL THEM you needed it there in 1 or 2 days? $21.00 for 1/2 lb (did that include box and packing?) overnight or Fedex 2 days. Was at Post Office yesterday and a clerk said to the Lady "Do you want it to get there tomorrow". Lady said "Sure." Clerk said $25. Lady went nuts. "But you said you wanted it there TOMORROW." Clerk said "OK how about 2-4 days for $6.00? "

How do they make their money? Shipping Fedex (they get around 25% commission if it is like the UPS Store). You drop off a package they get $1 per package. They have to take the same time to package it whether it was a $2 item or a $200 item. They have to properly package it because if it breaks you go back and tell them THEY packaged it wrong. Shipping isn't cheap. Labor isn't cheap. Rent isn't cheap.

There is more to the story then "they just ripped you off." It sure may have been expensive but that's not necessarily a rip off. I managed a The UPS Store for 3 years before I finally retired and heard that whine many times over.

It is so helpful to walk in an Indian's moccasins. (I hope this saying is not politically incorrect) but I can't think of anything more apropos. Thanks for sharing the views of one who has "been there, done that" "on the other side of the coin". (Talk about mixing metaphors.)

It was not expensive. It was in a 6"x6" box. It was not breakable, if it was the $15.00 box would have taken care of that. They said it would arrive in Wisconsin by Dec 6th. The $ 21.00 was just for the shipping, as I stated in my post. The box was an additional $ 15.00. Len

$15 for packing I can understand although it is a bit high but that's what they charge (customers have option to decline and DIY) however they charge carrier rates for shipping (they don't mark them up). While you still didn't mention the shipping carrier or shipping method they wanted to charge you $21 for I can't imagine where they got that for 5 day shipping from here to there for a 6 square @ 1lb. Overnight Fedex was like $29 and ground $11 which was only 3 days not 5. Something is missing but not sure why they would want to "rip you off." Whatever .... :)

UPS rates are based on distance and weight. Thier basic ground service rate for a 1 pound package is between $7.57 and $9.59. To get this rate, you probably will need to be a UPS customer or take your package to a UPS Service Center. This is not the UPS Store. You might get the better rates if you book your shipment online directly with UPS and the drop the package off in one of their drop boxes.

I'm sorry that's what they told me. Not having the experience that you do I just took her at her word. So you're saying she left something out when she gave me the price. Maybe she's seasonal help, I don't know. I already apologized in a previous post.

I worked there for a while and yes it's pricey and customers often walked away. Even an additional piece of tape had a cost. It's much cheaper to either buy online and have it shipped or take it to the post office and pack yourself. They even up-charge for postage stamps. Pack N Ship used to be the only shipping place in The Villages, but in the last few years, they've shut down one store, and halved the square footage of their flagship location. When I worked there business was down considerably from the year before.

Is that the one at Palm Ridge? I noticed it had shrunk considerably.

I went there once for the convenience because I live close and wanted to avoid post office lines -- never again. I'd expect a service fee on top of regular shipping, but it was an eyebrow-raising amount.

But then, I think USPO fees are high now, too. My mind is still stuck in 1970 rates!

On the positive side of progress, I'm delighted with prepaid return labels from online shopping. I often use Pack and Ship for drop-off, but that's not gonna keep them in business.

Most people use pack n ship for convenience. A few don’t care what “something” cost. I know many Villagers who maintain a summer home up north for the convenience of visiting family, friends and perhaps to get away from the “Heat” for a couple of months. No question, you pay for convenience. To me it is not that inconvenient to use the USPS (avoid the real busy times) to ship a package such as OP wanted to ship to his brother in law in Wisconsin. To each his own...

I have sold a lot of stuff on eBay and I always get a better price for medium to larger packages by going directly to UPS. The convenient UPS stores or Pack N Ship places do have to mark up stuff to provide that convenience.

Each type of service has its place. It is up to you to make that age old decision of time vs money

You were told the price before the services were performed. You then had a choice. You decided to
try another provider. I would not classify this as a rip off. Where was the fraud or deception?

I think the point of this thread got lost long ago. It wasn't the high cost but the unsupported accusation of "RIP-OFF" vs. "WOW! That was (or would have been) very expensive for a 1lb package and a 50cent box." Words DO matter. :D

Before I retired my last business involved mail order and I shipped about 200,000 packages over 15 years. I never used a third party, which is what a 'Pack n Ship' or Kinkos or any similar type business.

You didn't say what part of TV you're located, I'll use my references which are in the southern end. In Wildwood there is a post office, these boxes are free, the one in the middle is $7.20 anywhere and will arrive in about 3 days.

Stamps.com - USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate, Flat Rate Boxes (https://www.stamps.com/usps/priority-mail-flat-rate/)

http://img-aws.ehowcdn.com/640/cme/photography.prod.demandstudios.com/4c213c68-7107-49b1-adaa-d4e42b9eea09.jpg

The post office is in the shopping center on the east side of 301 that has the large antique mall on the right and is by the Ace Hardware and looks like this.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/664/31812056795_d44e5c02e7_c.jpg

If I have something bigger to ship like say a computer or something you're selling on eBay and you want confirmation of delivery and $100 coverage, then I go directly to Fedex. They have an actual location on 44 just east of Morse, you'll pass the gun shop on the right and it will be on the left behind a few other buildings and looks like this.

FedEx Ship Center - Leesburg, FL - 121 Satellite Court 34748 (https://local.fedex.com/fl/leesburg/LEEA/)
