Just bought a home in TV, Iris model. How much should plantation shutters cost? In Florida, which are better wood or composite? Who do you recommend for price, quality and installation?

Good question..I love the shutters but always thought that the wood would not work well in the humidity. Also with wood flooring...can't wait to read what others have to say.

I have no experience with either but. All out homes are airconditioned. They have to be to keep the humidity and mold under control. We even keep our HVAC on when we are gone for long periods of time. I can't see why either one wouldn't be ok.

indoors, wood is fine, the composite would be easier to clean I suppose,
don't know the prices though, nothings cheap

I have ordered plantation shutters for my patio villa. Four large windows are costing $2000 - they are beautiful - just like the ones they put in designer homes. I would recommend Blinds Plus Shutters and speak to Carl Seigel. He is the owner and wonderful to deal with. The number is 352-430-7200. He brought samples and showed me exactly what it will look like.

I have a friend who just purchased Sunland plantation shutters and she is very happy with them. Prices are apparently very reasonable. I'll send you a PM.

For an example, on our Lantana, which is probably comparable to an Iris, the total cost for every window covered with composite plantation shutters except for the sliding glass doors was $4,000 about a year and a half ago. We also did an outside frame on most of the windows. Seemed like a lot of money but wood shutters would have been a whole lot more and drapes can be really expensive, as we found out when we finally decided to cover the sliders.
I was away when Carl Siegel first showed DH the samples. Hubby wasn't thrilled with the idea of shutters at first but he liked the fact that Carl's product comes with a built-in sill and the tilt bar is at the back. The louvered arch for the one big window is really cool, too.
We look at some of the decorating decisions (mistakes?) we made and say "Oh, that didn't work out like we envisioned," but the shutters definitely were not a mistake.

What are the advantages of plantation shutters? Seems they just block more of the light and view.
Thanks,

I'm hearing good feedback from friends who have used Village Blinds and Shutters located next to Bargains and Treasures (close to CR 466/301 intersection). Rhonda works there on Mondays and Fridays and she is very helpful. Check it out!

The advantages of the plantation shutters are they help in improving the locks of the doors. These plantation shutters are attractive and we does not need curtains as well. A part from that, these plantation shutters are long lasting.

Call Rick at 48 hour blinds for best price and service, glad I did, beautiful job and love the shutters. I was even able to get the color to match my bisque kitchen cabinets, since kitchen is open, wanted all the wood to match.
352-330-7310. Rick does the measuring, installing and is the owner. He has a good reputation on TOTV and in TV and you will not be sorry.

Firstly congrats for the new house, it is a good decision you have taken. Plantation shutters are really a good option to decorate the interiors of your house. I would suggest you to search online for good plantation shutters, make sure that to select the best one.

We got shutters for every window in our Whispering Pine in June - love, love, love 'em and Rick from 48 Hour Blinds was right on the money and timely. Absolutely no regrets and worth every single penny. His number is 352-330-7310. :BigApplause:

We had 38 windows installed with white composite shutters installed in our new home in 2004.
The rods are attached by what looks like a small staple and it was suggested to open and close using the actual shuuter and not the rod. Good idea.
We also tinted the glass; we are in Orlando not TV.
Is tinted glass approved for use in TV?

If you are planning on putting the shutters across the glass doors and glass panels to the lanai as we were, you may want to check to determine how much sun light you will be blocking while the shutters are in the folded 'open' position. Rick at 48 Hr Blind Factory demonstrated to us that we would lose considerable day light because the plantation shutters would block the glass panels on either side when folded open to access the sliding glass doors. This may or may not be a problem for you, but Rick can demonstrate this much better than I can explain it here. He saved us considerable money and grief, because we probably would not have been happy with the results had we proceeded with purchasing and installing plantation shutters.

All our windows on our Bridgeport have shutters. Carl Siegel did a wonderful job. Our sliders to the Lanai also have shutters but they slide just like the glass doors. If you have an eyebrow window, make sure they tell you how they will cover that because most times that is left open. I love mine and they are easy to clean. Carl does a few things differently from all the other quote we had.

Plantation shutters come in a vast array of sizes, styles, and materials. Most of them are made up of hardwoods such as poplar or bass and can a have a number of finishes to add attractive look to residential and commercial properties. Plantation shutters made of rich woods are exceptionally attractive.

Plantation shutters give a magnificent look to your house, and there are lots of advantages from plantation shutters, they are fully adaptable to allow for more or less light, offer solitude, and can even have insulation benefits.

I don't like Plantation shutters because even when fully open they block light. I like to open the shades in the morning and walk around and smile at the sunshine flooding in.
I also hate vertical shades,we do have them in our bedroom slider but with translucent drapes over them and both are fully opened during the day. On our big slider, we put draperies on traverse rods.
EVERYONE is different.

I like the look of plantation shutters...but never considered they might block the Florida sun...and that may be enough for me not to use them! I often wonder if they are a lot of maintainence as far as dusting goes. I am not the most domestic hawk in the nest when it comes to dusting! :ohdear:

I have white plantation shutters (wood) in my house in Wheatfield and I absolutely love them. I'd get them again in a heartbeat. They are very easy to keep clean. I'm not going to spend my life cleaning........too many other fun things to do.......and with a little microfibre gadget from Bed, Bath & Beyond, these shutters are dusted in no time. I'd definitely recommend the plantation shutters.......but different strokes for different folks.
What do people recommend for sliding glass door leading to the lanai? I'm not wild about vertical blinds......what are other options? Thanx!

I love mine and they are not the hard to take care of. They do block out the sun and you can open tops for light but keep bottom closed for privacy. I also have them on the lanai sliders and love the clean look of them. Carl Siegel did our shutters and everyone notices them when the see the house for the first time.

rick from 48 hr blinds did our whole house . they were sunland shutters they are thicker panels then all the others i looked at ..call him at 352-330-7310.we did not do them on the sliders .we seen them on a house.they closed the room in and blocked the view
Same for us... Rick installed them same day we closed....I had ordered them a month prior after he went out and measured my windows during construction...great service
Manufactures of shutters and blinds do not sell direct to consumers, but some internet re-sellers do. The home owner is then responsible to measure and install. If they make a mistake, oh well! A blinds and shutter contractor does well to get with the manufacture and get the proper training to insure they will be installed right. This is supported by a letter of "certification" from them and the consumers warranty in the future will not be an issue. Posted by: Larry S. Feenstra owner of Gator Blinds & Shutters 352-789-3834

Try ww.blinds.com. This will give you pricing information. I have used them a number of times for my Gardenia. Very satisfied with pricing and service. It takes less than 30 minutes to install each window by yourself. Skills level required is minimal.

Just had Gator Blinds installed a few weeks ago, big variety to choose from. Unlike other places I called this place at least answers the phone.
Had vertical blinds of various sizes installed with lifetime warranty. Had many styles to choose from ($ - $$$) for any budget. Had 4 sliders and a large window done for approx. $1000. for fabric lined verticals. Great choices, textures and colors.

my advice is to do your own research on shutters. look up the manufacturers online and make your own informed decision. many things people tell you are to get you to buy from them and not always the exact truth.
i think the 3 most common brands you will come across in the villages are sunland shutters, norman international, and hunter douglas. all three have websites.

Rick went above and beyond what a person might expect. His crew helped Sweetie lift a heavy mirror into place on our wall. He even told my new neighbors I was a nice person. And told me they were nice. He gets a lot of business in our new village but I think he deserves it.

:wave:Well you see I did buy blinds from him. Our new house came with blinds but I changed some out.
I was really impressed with watching him do my friend Swimdawgs whole house with Plantation shutters. I am old enough to be impressed with good work and good materials...plus as anyone who has met him will tell you he is a talker and usually that doesn't impress me. But I could see by what he said, not about himself but about things in general that he is a decent person who works hard. Working hard is probably my most valued character attribute.

Blinds plus Shutters just installed 8 plantation shutters in my house a week ago. Can't tell you how much I love them. Great quality and they sure do make a difference in a room. Plus they were delivered EXACTLY when he estimated they would be delivered, leadtime right now is 9 weeks, as long as I knew that upfront, it didn't concern me.
His price was excellent, actually startled me, I thought maybe he miscalculated, lol...

Is there a difference between plantation blinds and plantation shutters? And if so, is there a difference between the blinds the builder provides in a spec house and plantation blinds?
I like my blinds, but I need something else to spiff them up. Looks too industrial.

We got manufactured wood floors from Floormasters. Found they had the best price, were very neat. We did the kitchen one year, the living room and dining room the next year, and just did the bedrooms. The match was perfect and also the installation. I get lots of compliments on our floors.
