View Full Version : Pros and cons of living in McClure

We've been in our new home for 17 days now and have put atleast 300 miles on our vehicle going to the places we needed to go to buy things for the house and other matters. Going to the Sumter Landing area or Spanish Springs is royal pain. The traffic you have to contend with and all the stop lights where people wait for their favorite shade of green before being reminded, with a horn blast, that it is the only shade of green available on that traffic signal. The lack of shopping at this time is a definite con.

The construction noise and activity is disrupting to your morning coffee on the lanai, another con.

The good is that traffic is low volume, except for frustrated ex-Kamikaze pilot operated construction vehicles that seem intent on dying for the emperor.

Everyone in our neighborhood is new here so we all have many of the same problems in getting settled. The sanitation workers love us as there are tons of moving boxes on the curb for pick-up.

We are slowly learning where everything is for shopping and other things but sometimes the GPS lies to us and we end up in a parking lot in the lower 40.

All in all, we are enjoying our new home and getting out of the rut were in before moving here.

We closed last month, we have several relatives that live their already so we knew where stores where and would combine trips whenever we could. Yes we added many miles to the car we shipped down there. We will make our final in this spring.

We went through the same thing when we moved into Fenney 18 months ago. Lot's of running around to do with a new home, Ace Hardware in the Wildwood Plaza is a real help and not far away. Babette's is now in Brownwood, we had to travel to southern Leesburg to buy our furniture but it was worth it, get to know Leesburg, there is a lot there including the hospital which is only 15 minutes away from you. As time goes by you will find shortcuts to most of the places you travel and the construction in McClure will be over before you know it as it's a rather small village however you have other villages under construction around you. Traffic in Lake Sumter and Spanish Springs will be much lighter in April. Enjoy watching the daily changes down here.

All good things take time. We moved into Santiago 18 years ago and there was absolutely nothing south of Rt. 466 except cows. There were no Walmarts, Lowes, or Home Depots and only a few restaurants. We had to drive to Ocala or Leesburg if we wanted anything other than groceries. But life is good now and I am sure it will be for you in a few years.

For those that don’t want to wait 18 years, we have a designer Iris for sale in the Village of Hadley, between Sumter and Brownwood, close to Colony shopping and restaurants. We love this location and found a pool home in same neighborhood.

Send a PM if you are interested in a well maintained, upgraded home.....with NO kissing lanai.

It is generally a good idea not to judge the people and situation after so short a period. I find the drivers here no different than other places...I was just used to them in the other places. As to distance traveled for stuff...not any different when we moved to Sanibel...your area will have more options as time progresses...see first sentence and take a deep breath before being so negative.

We are in the LSL area and did this just by the sheer number of times we went to Lowes and Home Depot when we first moved in.

The OP already bought a home in McClure. I'm sure there are hundreds of designer homes for sale in that area and there are already used ones for sale down here but this is about new homes in a new area and all the temporary PITA stuff that goes along with it. These are the things we'll all remember, it's part of the fun of being down here.

Things will settle down. When we first moved to our new house in Hemingway my husband made seven round trips on a rainy day like this to the paint store in Southern Trace to get just the right shade of taupe mixed for our interior walls. And, we were fearful the Publix in Colony would shut down for lack of business.

Yes the roundabouts, thank you for reminding me. I drive 10 miles out of the way to avoid them and only get on Morse or Buena Vista Blvd when that is the only choice to get where I need to go. I use 301 a lot.

In no time McClure will be the center of The Villages with stores and shopping all around.

Thought I would provide some suggestions if you are going to move to the Villages.
1. Location, location location is critical. Best to rent a home for a couple of months and get the feel of the area you are considering. It is close to banks, stores, key roads, etc. Is it not near railroad track.
2. Is it new or a rebuy home.
3. Never sign up for vendor or contractor without first calling Seniors vs Crime for history of Co..
4. Caeful in using medical facilities. Consider driving the 2.5 hours to Jacksonville to Mayo Clinic for top notch medical support
5. Drive as though the other driver is either senile of drunk.
6. Remember the POA is a watch dog of the Villages GOv't and the other organization is an arm of the Developer. Does not mean that either is better than the other. Just who they are working for.
7. If your smoke alarm starts to go off because the battery is old call the fire department and they will come to your house and replace the batteries,
8. Always remember you are in the villages which has thousands of golf carts. Be more careful in the car.
9. Don't gripe about the gates. They are there to remind people of lots of golf carts, take picture of in and out cars for
protection, etc etc.
10.Remember you are lucky to have such a great place to live and respect the honor to be here.
Who can add more observations??:bigbow:

Mary and I stayed here a couple of times before moving here. We chose Palo Alto because we are on a circular street therefore ease of backing out of driveway. We are less than 2 miles from our church St Timothy's, our bank, our Publix or Winn Dixie, Our gas station, Walgreens, MVP, the Sharon and Spanish Springs. Currently we are still very Mobile but we planned for the future just in case. Len & Mary

<snip>Should be restated for clarity: If your smoke alarm starts to go off because the battery is old, buy a new battery and call the fire department. They will come to your house and install the battery.

There are pros and minuses to every area. Your glass is either half full or half empty.

In a few years your area will be bustling with retail activity. you will have stores, banks eateries, etc. In Florida there seems to be some obscure law that states there will be a Dollar General every square mile and a Publix every 2 square miles......lol.

I also suspect that because you bought early before this occurs, you will soon enjoy a good increase in equity....just as the folks in Fenney have enjoyed and will continue to do so.

501 is now open...in a few years with Linden, Monarch Grove, Marsh Bend, DeLuna, Southern Oaks and West Lake on the horizon, you will be in the middle of a thriving community. I truly believe that in a few years Brownwood will be the middle of The Villages.

You are blessed and have a bright future to look forward to. I think your future equity increase is well worth this temporary inconvenience. Consider yourself a Pioneer......that is why The Villages put wagons on future properties....haha.

And I thought that's how some of the old folks arrived here.
