How many of you got an automated phone call after midnight, last night with a warning about 2 (possibly black) males in black clothing and what appeared to be miliary or law enforcement garb, in the Colony (commerce) area?? They said to remain indoors as these two could be armed and dangerous. Rather disconcerting to have the phone ring at that late hour.

I didn't. But I remember year before last when the gypsies broke into a home in Winifred we got a call.

At 2:43 AM, an alert from Sumter County Sheriff went out about armed suspect in Santiago, where I live. I was sound asleep and didn’t get it until this morning. Hope he’s gone! Good grief!

We received calls on home and cell, text and email a little after midnight about suspects in Colony.

We got the alert also but certainly are curious as to the outcome. We turned on all of our outside lights.

We left Colony Rec Ctr around 1 AM last night and did not see or hear any unusual activity.

We're the same. Texts, email, phone call about an ". . . armed suspect last seen in the Arredondo Dr and Caribe Dr. . . . White male, 49 years of age, last seen wearing black shirt and is bald. Possibly armed with a knife . . ." And now: <crickets>

Last night we were at a party on the Lanai on Osprey golf course facing 466A. At about 9:30 we counted 8 police cars flying down 466A towards Colony. Like everyone else I didn't get an alert until early this morning.

Well, when I lived in Rye NY suburb they used to send actual police officers around to bang on your door at midnight, I don’t know which is more disconcerting

Found text and VM and email left at 12:03am this morning. All devices are set to "quiet" at that hour so I didn't have to be worried plus we both have some sort of virus and were out cold by 10pm. :)

No badguys showed up on our security cams.

There's an app for Android called Sumter County Sheriff (FL) that will give you these kinds of alerts on your smartphone as well as traffic alerts due to accidents, weather alerts, etc. It also lets you report incidents to the Sheriff's Office, look up sex offenders and much more.

We don't have a land line and we turn off the ringers on our cell phone before going to bed so as to not be disturbed. No alerts for us unless someone breaks into our home. Hope that never happens, but if it does my Sig and I will be ready.

Google Sumter Sherrif's Dept. FL. It will take you to a website and in one of the links offers a place to sign up.

I have heard nothing more about either instances, at least on the “online, other news source.” Has anyone heard whether these people have been caught, or at least left town? I didn’t think to call the Sheriff’s office today.

I have never signed up for any such notifications, but my phone rang after midnight, and when I picked it up, there was no one there. The caller-ID said "Sumter County", that's all. I couldn't care less about anything they might be notifying me about, so I wish I could make sure this doesn't happen again. I can protect my house a lot better than any sheriff's office.

I am a huge fan of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office. In the past they have cooperated with neighboring law enforcement in order to track down and arrest some really bad people. One example is the one woman and two men who knocked down and really hurt an older Village resident when they stole her purse in front of Target. The three fled to Orlando and they found them and drug their sorry AZZES back here and arrested them. Lake, Sumter and Marion County all worked together on that one if I remember correctly.

I am glad you feel safe but me and mine are glad for our local law enforcement.

It was in today's Sun...no mention if they were caught.

I never said I didn't appreciate local law enforcement. But they usually are there to investigate the crime, not prevent it.
