For those who are curious. A Rag ****** is a boater who sails his boat with wind driven sails, as opposed to a power boater. Power boaters AKA Stink Potters. Just thought ya might want to know.

Hi Rag ******,

You know what I thought when I saw your name....I thought you made rag rugs -- you know like those rugs from Colonial times. The rugs are quite pretty and, as I understand it, made out of rags. That is what I really thought.

Anyway, thanks for explaining. I learned something today. That's a completely new term for me to know.

I'm Boomer....because I am one, along with millions of others. -- Not one of those submarines that glides beneath the surface and then blows things up with ballistic missles. Those are called boomers, too.

Never heard that term.. I'm living in Kiel, Germany and they host the largest sailing event, in Europe, each year in June. It's called Kieler Woche (Kiel Week) and it's 10 days of sailing regatta's and partying. The city of Kiel is approximately 200,000 population, but they receive more than 3 million visitors in the 10 days of Kieler Woche.

One of the highlights of Kieler Woche is the tail ships. Last year, that largest tall ship here was staffed by the Russian Navy and measured some 300 ft. It was moored in front of our apartment building. Other than the tall ships, there are literally thousands of sail boats of all makes and sizes here.

Try a YouTube search for Kieler Woche 2009. What you will see is the whole city is a party zone for 10 days...

Memason, I am familiar with Kiel week. We spent a lot of years racing (small boats 25') before becoming cruisers. Racing really teaches a person how to sail. I sailed boats since I was 14 years old but never really sailed well untill I started racing around 30 something.

Regattas are a blast. Our club sponsored the Catalina 25 Nationals one year. We also use to Travel out to San Diego to watch the Americas Cub when Koch and Connor were racing. That was kewl. We bareboated a 37 foot cruiser out of Harbor Island and were able to get very close to the action. We saw Conner blow that famous GE spinaker up close. It sounded like a cannon going off. It was amazing the crew had a second chute up in less than 3 minutes, and didn't relinquish the lead.

We sailed The Great Lakes and although we never participated we did watch the starts and finishes a few years for the Chicago-Mac race.

In our first five years of retirement we moved aboard our boat. We cruised The Great Lakes, North Channel and then via the Erie Barge canal the East Coast and Bahamas for those five years. It was great fun. We were snow birds on the boat following the seasons.

That sounds like fun. I have a friend, who bought a sailboat in Hungary, sailed out the Mediterranean to the Canary Islands, across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and will soon arrive in the US. I have been following their progress via website [tracked via ham radio] and they have been staying in some fabulous places.

They are sailing in a 40 footer...
