I was so pleased to see a thread today that had been closed after only 1 post, had an explanation for the closure. The moderator's post said:

“Question answered, thread closed.”

So nice to get an explanation – you made me feel like an adult. I think many/some, well at the least I, would love to understand more about participating in TOTV. There are times I understand why a thread is closed. But there have been many other times where I scratched my head and re-read the posts, thinking, “Ok, if I were Moderator Queen-For-A-Day, why would I close this?” and was unable to posit an answer. So, my suggestion would be to include a reason, whenever possible, as the above quoted moderator did. Some suggestions off the top-of-my-head (but I’m sure there are many better suggestions).

Personal Attack - Thread Closed
Political – Thread Closed
Too far off Topic – Thread Closed
No longer helpful – Thread Closed
Timeliness has expired – Thread Closed
Lack of interest – Thread Closed
Inflammatory - Thread Closed
Uncivil - Thread Closed
Because I'm the Mommy or Because I said so - Thread Closed

etc., etc.

I would also love to get a PM whenever my personal post is removed. Sometimes I don’t get it. Sometimes I do – LOL like the time I posted to a classified ad for a large, outdoor Pink Flamingo, asking the seller to please don’t sell it here since I wouldn’t want to live next to one. HaHa – What was I thinking? So happy that post was removed faster than you can say Jiminy Cricket.

Anyway, the Forum does say . . . Suggestion Box. Thanks.

That post was like deja vu for them. The last time that question got asked it got ugly really fast. I think they do a good job of keeping things civil but I agree an explanation is nice.

Hi -- I was not questioning why that particular thread was closed -- I think it was a perfectly good decision. I am seeking a little clarification to help understand why a post is deleted or a thread is closed especially when it is not blatantly obvious.

Explanation with removal would be good.
I sometimes wonder if certain posters get more slack than others.

I thought we were not supposed to talk about the person or people behind the curtain so to speak or why they do whatever they do.

Not my intention to question anything they do -- just simply want to offer a suggestion that would help me (and maybe some others) better understand the rules so that I can better obey the rules

You are correct. These posts may be removed! :ho:

Would I be violating a rule if I wanted to say that I agree with FW and think, for the most part, the Moderators do an excellent job. If this is forbidden, how would I know it?

It would seem OK. They are having a good day today.

But please, let's not stray from the point of the thread -- it is not to question or talk about the Moderators. It is simply to offer a suggestion that I feel would enhance my understanding of how to remain in good standing on TOTV.

Some threads go off track in an interesting way.
IMHO this is a perfect example of a thread that has gone off track, and become uncivil.

Can't we all just get along? It's a New Year. How about a new slate? "Love thy neighbor ... etc." Walk in someone else's mocassins.

If nothing else we are in The Villages so:

Many, many posts on this thread have been deleted as off topic or directed at member. The OP’s topic deserves the opportunity to be thoroughly discussed so the thread remains open. Any posts straying from the topic or directed at member will be deleted.

Thanks for at least allowing the thread to continue, particularly since publicly discussing moderation...seems to be a bit of a fine line to walk.

Speaking of which, thanks also for clarifying the "ownership" and "feel"...that was mentioned in the other thread.

Thank you for affording me the courtesy and respect by permitting my voice to be heard. Sorry if I was the cause of so much activity for you, but that activity highlights why moderation is necessary, but that is not the subject of this thread.

I also want to thank those members who gave real-life examples of “how to have a post deleted” -- for those who missed that small window, those examples are no longer available, but that is not the subject of this thread.

I don't think I did a good enough job of conveying that my intention in creating this thread is NOT to discuss moderation. Thus, in my opinion there is no line, fine or otherwise.

My point is since I don't always know why a thread is closed or a post is deleted I am suggesting that an answer (abeit possibly generic) be provided. I gave a list of some possible reasons -- some I think are pretty good and a couple that are just plain silly fun like:

Failure to Play Nice - Post Deleted

I think that's a great idea. Even a generic answer would be helpful to let us know what behavior to avoid
Usually it's obvious, but sometimes I don't have a clue.

Remember that old saying, You're Known By The Friends You Keep? Well, sometimes a post can be righteously eliminated because you are doing battle with a Bad Boy or Girl!

I have been more aware than I was at one point in not being a problem child for the Moderators. First time in a long time I had one post snagged yesterday, it was marginal, could have gone either way. The rules state that it's their way or the highway so no hard feelings, ANYMORE ANYWAY! :1rotfl:

Closed threads, yes. But how would you do it for removed posts? PM? That could get a little cumbersome for the mods.

I've had a couple of posts removed and each time I had a very courteous note as to why.

That's great and exactly what I propose for the "Post Removed" portion of my suggestion. I guess it is not being applied consistently - I remember only once, a couple of years ago, whereby I was told that my post was moved from one area to another. Very helpful for what I was then a newbie!

I have too and I think It's a good idea. I just doubt the mods want to commit to doing it every time they remove a post. :)

However you can't delete a post but you can make it disappear the next day by deleting the contents
and replacing with ... or any three-digit symbol. :icon_wink:
