Anyone know the status of the test taxi van that was tested in Virginia Trace a short while ago?

There have been a couple presentations through out The Villages.....it will be a gradual implementation but it does sound promising based on the presentations I've seen. Considering the announcements from Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota and others, there is a strong industry commitment to driver less and electric....it will be interesting.

Interesting..... but maybe not for the drivers that used to drive for a living...

Except the "driverless vehicle" will always require a "driver" here in TV - at least in any of our lifetimes. I saw it driving around the square at LSL the other day and it seemed very confused because it couldn't tell if it was dogs or babies in the baby carriages. It kept scratching it's tires in bewilderment.

Driverless cars creep me out. But that’s just me. I would prefer a chauffeur, hat and all.
I just got an email from the Investment Education Club that says Thursday, January 24, at 3:00, at Sea Breeze, their topic will be “Investment Opportunities in Autonomous Vehicles.”
I have no interest in the topic but thought I would share the info here in case someone else is curious.
Also, if you have an interest in this club, you can sign up for their email and then you can pick and choose when you are interested in attending.
Addendum: just found out the location will be changed for this week. Will be back later with the information.

If it made it to Rolling Acres in one piece, there may be hope for the system.
Many people driven cars don't make it that far!

I'd be surprised, with The Villages being a retirement community, if others don't feel the same way.

.
I posted the above this morning and later received an email that said the meeting location is changed for this week only. It will be at Pimlico.
The club has a website at villagesie.weebly.com if you are interested in more info.

Be prepared to be surprised...:). Also, at the presentation, having a driver in the car will last the first year, then, when it proves out, the will be driverless. One of the questions that was not answered is how they will handle dogs.

The driver-less taxi appears to be operational, and I came across a news release from the operator:
We wanted to share some exciting news. Voyage is now getting ready to bring our self-driving taxi service to new neighborhoods at The Villages over the coming months and to help gauge interest among residents, we've put together a simple on-line contact form for those that are interested in trying our service at no charge. Click the URL below to place your name on the list.
www.ridevoyage.com (NOTE: I am not sure the link pasted in correctly, so you may have to type this in manually.)
They feel this is the best way for residents to express interest in Voyage, and will help them stay in touch with residents as they expand their service.
Every trip will have a safety driver onboard
NOTE: I have nothing to do with this company, I just saw the news release and am passing on the info, as I see many people asking about getting taxi's in the villages.

I put my email address on the link you provided. Tinker: thanks for the link.
I think driver-less taxi's are exciting; however it's reassuring to me that every trip will have a safety driver on board.
JoMar, what did you mean by your comment: One of the questions that was not answered is how they will handle dogs.

What is the purpose/benefit/advantage of driver-less, if there will be a safety driver on board? Taxi with a different name?

As JoMar said, the safety driver will be on board for the first year only in the testing phase.

What is the purpose/benefit/advantage of driver-less, if there will be a safety driver on board? I think the safety driver is only on board for the initial period, perhaps the first year?
Once people get comfortable with the idea, and the safety has been well documented, they probably will eliminate the safety driver.

They have agreed to take service dogs but that might need to be separate vehicles. The issue is the next rider might have allergies related to animal dander and in a confined space like a vehicle that could create an issue. That was in the seminar I attended a couple months ago so not sure if they have addressed the trips to the vet, the "comfort" dogs etc.
We also signed up for the email today.

I was worried that a driverless vehicle might not "see" a dog dashing out on the road.
JoMar, thanks for your clarification.

The sensors will see dogs, sand cranes etc and will actually react in milliseconds as compared to us who may take seconds. In addition the car will have a 360 degree "view" at all times so the defensive action should not put others in jeopardy where we would probably swerve. All in theory at this point but we will find out.

Thanks to villagetinker for the email link. I'm partially disabled and rarely drive but have kept my car since public transportation options are slim around here. I'd be glad to see this venture succeed, especially if it means not having to schedule a taxi in advance or wait hours for one to arrive.

Do you need to give a tip? Who do you talk to? Does the car blow the horn for you at pickup? So many questions. (Just a joke, no need to answer.)
