We love our screened-in lanai; probably a matter of personal preference, but we love the fresh air and 'outdoor-sy' atmosphere. Yes, it is too hot to sit out there sometimes in the summer afternoons, but we still wouldn't be without it for the more comfortable times of the morning and evening during the summer; and for the other times of the year, and for rainy weather any time of the year, when it can be nice to sit out on the lanai and read. It's one of the many wonderful things about living in Florida.

I spend a great deal of time on our screened lanai. If it is between 70 and 95 degrees and I am home, that is where you will find me rain or shine.
We are fortunate to have privacy in the rear and a lot of trees for shade and bird watching and listening.
I wouldn't consider enclosing it.

I completely agree with you downeaster. We, too, are lucky enough to have a very private view and I love the fresh air. Some of my friends have the sliders and they are very nice, but, I just don't want my beautiful view and fresh air cut off in any way. I especially love the fog in the very early mornings.
Yep, they might get hot in the summer during "sun load" time, but that's when I'm at the pool! :)

It depends where you are coming from, and seeing you are from VT, you will find it very hot. With that said you will probably just enjoy it in the mornings and late evenings.
To Me & the wife having lived in the South. Florida is actually cooler in the summer then were we live now in Central Alabama!! But agree with the others, must more prefer open screen lanai over closed in.

for us - but I think this is a really individual thing - I have friends up north who never use their really nice decks and I was on mine all the time I could spare. Some people just aren't "outdoor people," I too love it in a gentle rain and in the early morning and late evening in the summer, although have only spent about 2 weeks there so far in summertime.
I'm with Freeda here - in really hot weather will just be at the pool or in the inside a/c most of the time. Even if you enclose, would think it is still much warmer out there with all the windows. Nice to use in the winter, though, during the colder weather.
Also, can see I would probably enclose if had "kissing" lanais or just an annoying (loud or intrusive) neighbor, perhaps.
I guess in a perfect world I'd have both an enclosed lanai, and a covered, screened lanai - think I've seen some of these at open houses, but mostly if the lanai is enclosed, the birdcage doesn't have a roof.

storms in the summer in this area, and with the rain and wind, your lanai can get very wet. That's why we decided to enclose our lanai with glass sliders. They can be opened when desired, and you have the best of both worlds.

I agree with most of the others here. We have a private back yard and I love the feel, sounds and fragrance of the outdoors on our screened back-yard lanai.
