This is going in where the Quiznos used to be. That's just across from the Crispers where TOTV has been having their 3rd Friday 3 p.m. luncheons.
Funny. There are no Gandolfo's New York Delis in New York State.

I just want to let everyone know that our grand opening target date is July 14.Our food is awesome and our deli salads are made fresh everyday.
We aren't in TV right now (seasonal resident). But I look forward to visiting Gandolfo's when we return, as we live in close proximity to Southern Trace. Where are you located within the plaza?

They are a stone's throw from Crispers near the stanchion on the golf cart path where you can turn into Publix's parking lot.

I don't suppose a NEW YORK deli will carry Braunschweiger, Thuringer, Souse or Deutch ****ofle Klosse?
I have edited this three times and WHY DOES THE WORD POTATO IN GERMAN GET ******** through it? What if I spelled it cartoffle? Or cardoffle...? Is this some kind of dirty word I have never heard? It just means German Potato Salad !.................sigh

Anyone try this place out yet? I am not sure they opened but seem to remember something about the 18th of August, 2010 as an opening day for Gandolfo's in Southern Trace Shopping Center.

I noted that Gandolfo's Deli was not listed in the latest construction update in the Daily News. Nor was their numbered site appearing on the map.
Anyone know if they are still coming? Last I heard (talking to their manager) the hold up had to do with the installation of the grill hood which in turn was holding up their required inspections etc. Sure hope they are still coming!

I am anxious to try Gandolfo's. I notice that it is headquartered and has most of its franchises in Utah. I've visited many a Jewish deli but never a Mormon deli. It will be interesting to say the least.

Funny isn't it that we all grow up with different things and think everyone has the same things. I never saw a deli the first 20 years of my life in Columbus, Ohio.
I am certainly familiar with them now, but the nuances sometimes escape me. What is the best thing to buy, say, at a good New York deli???
When I was a kid they sold lunch meat and some salads at the butcher shop. I never heard of or ate a bagel until I was twenty something.
And probably New Yorkers didn't have mock turtle soup and Goetta.
There are a lot of things that are still unfamilar when I go to a real deli.
What is YOUR favorite thing??

These are not really delis down here. They are hoagie/submarine shops. They use that name to attract customers.
You will never find fresh garlic pickles or salads at these places.

Yes, Gandolfos opened today and of course we gave it a try. GREAT in every way. I agree texasfal, a half was plenty large enough. I tried the "Little Italy" and my husband had something called " 42nd Street". Both of us were VERY satisfied with the quality and quantity.

We went today for lunch and loved the sandwiches. HOWEVER, when we arrived home and looked at the receipt, we were astonished to find out that we were charged for "extra" salt and pepper and olive oil to the tune of 10 cents each! Doesn't sound like much, but nickeling and diming like this will surely put people off. And, yes, I did call them and was told that this is their policy. Looks like we'll be going back to Jersey Mike's!

stephen (rpd) -- Is it Gandolfo's policy to charge for extras like pickles, cucumbers, etc.? If so, you may have a problem in TV. I can't think of one deli/sandwich place that charges extra for the veggies or sauces (the meat, yes, but not the veggies or sauces or spreads).
I do understand corporate policies, but I also under market place demand. I have to admit, TVers in general are pretty spoiled -- we know what we want and how we want it. We'll pay a fair price but don't react well to any feeling of being cheated or overcharged. I might come once but if I ask for a little extra cream cheese on my bagel (I wouldn't -- I'd be more likely to ask for less) and I find out it will cost me extra, I won't be back. I think you'll find this attitude pretty true for most TV residents.
But I'll be by tomorrow morning to check you out -- I'm praying for a GOOD bagel.

It's not our policy to charge for extras on the sandwiches. We will be providing free pickles with the sandwiches starting next week. Corporate would like us to have an "up-charge" for a large deli pickle on the side, but we made the decision yesterday to start providing those at no charge starting next week. Unfortunately we won't be open for breakfast until next monday. I would like to also extend a thank you to this website for allowing us the opportunity to speak with our current/future customers. We can't wait until our add comes out on the site. Stephen

Stephen,
Thanks for your input...
I've said it here before, It's not having a problem in the restaurant business that' the issue...problems are a fact of everyday life in that business...
It's what ownership / management does about it to make it right for the customer.
Ignoring it NEVER works!
Good job addressing it. See you there in November...get the Crusty Italian bread ready!!!

My wife and I ate at the deli on Thursday. We got there at lunch time. The place was crowded but the staff was doing a good job of trying to move things along pretty quickly.
I wanted to order the chicken salad sandwich but I was told they didn't have any chicken salad so I ordered a roast beef hero with marinated mushrooms. Sandwich was delicious.
My wife ordered one of the specialty sandwiches. She was told by the staff that she could substitute another meat for one of the meats in the sandwich. Unfortunately, even though it was on the receipt, whoever made the sandwich didn't make the substitution so my wife didn't enjoy her sandwich. By the time we discovered the error, my wife had already eaten part of the sandwich and we had another appointment to go anyway so we were crunched for time.
I thought the service was fast despite the crowded restaurant. If you go there you might want to try to avoid the busy lunchtime at least until things calm down a bit. My wife and I will definitely give it another try. Glad to hear they are adding pickles because my wife and I were discussing how we would like to have a pickle with our sandwich.

It's amusing to a New Yorker to see menu items that are supposed to be authentic. I've seen "butter" on a sandwich once in my life. It was a Church fair in Orange County (60 miles North of NYC) selling pre-made sandwiches. A real NY deli would never list a deli sandwich with "butter" although I'm sure they'd put it on if you specifically asked for it. The thought of butter on a deli sandwich is gross! Maybe this is a mid-western tradition but certainly not New York where even if a deli isn't kosher, they at least try to be kosher-style?

Putting butter on the sandwich keeps the bread from soaking up the mayonnaise or dressing. That could be the reason on those pre-mades, but I don't know about the ones that are to be eaten at the deli.

There's no doubt that some folks ask for butter on their sandwich but I've never seen "butter" included as part of the sandwich description on a menu. Did you have a chance to look over Gandolfo's menu to see what I'm referring to? I'd like to think that you could order one of these "butter sandwiches" without butter. I've also known people (although not many) who would only eat macaroni with butter, no red sauce or garlic and oil, just butter. I'm just reporting my personal experience from growing up in the Bronx and working in Manhattan for almost 40 years. In those days (the 50's) there was a Kosher or Italian deli every couple of blocks, and my recollection is "butter" or margerine was never mentioned or suggested for a sandwich. Yeah, now that I think about it, Nedicks used to cook their hot dogs in butter. Maybe life was different on Staten Island.

Just had bagel and lox at here. Service was great. Met Wayne, one of the owners -- super guy! The bagel was okay, but still not a NY bagel -- outside too soft -- but not too bad. Biggest complaint was only 3 itty bitty pieces of lox. I don't expect lox to be piled on, but I do expect to see it cover all of the bagel, not just half of it. Fortunately, this was immediately rectified when mentioned. I definitely will go back but think I'll try something other than a bagel.

I'm with you on the bagels. As a born and bred New Yorker, I've been really craving a true New York bagel. I stopped at Gandolfo's and had their bagel with cream cheese. Well, I'm still craving a true New York bagel. It seems impossible to get one in Florida. The rest of the menu looks promising, though. I'm just not expecting to get New York area bread.

I know what you mean and I'm not even from NY. Back when bagels crossed over from Jewish Deli to mainstream-- well, let's just say that oft times, something got lost in the translation. :read:

I am a born New Yorker and so was my mother and we ALWAYS put butter on a turkey sandwich, as did lots of my friends.......NYC, Brooklyn, Staten Island! If you went to a Jewish deli, you got margarine........
Us too out in Ohio. It is yummy. Don't forget the Hellmanns.

It looks like there are no Gandolfo's Deli actually in New York State or City. Isn't that ironic? http://gandolfosdeli.com/storelocator.php These stores are mostly out west. Utah has the most with a few dozen or so of these delis.

That's the answer Bogie!!; I thought I read when Gandolfo's was in the constructions phases that they were going to ship in the bagels from NY every day. Maybe I was dreaming that. I just wish it were possible to get a good bagel and crusty bread in Florida.
I love it here in the bubble and I'm not leaving, but "a crusty kaiser roll and fresh butter" mmmmmmmmm

The days of real NY bagels ended years ago! Sadly!

Is it true that Gandolfo's charges for a small dish of cole slaw and pickles that TooJays routinely puts out on every table with sandwiches? Stephen should take note what TooJays is already doing if they really intend to be seriously competitive with an established favorite in TV. And forget about next week. Some people give a new restaurant only one try before deciding whether they like it. Remember the infamous "Dog House." It didn't last six months and it wasn't because the food wasn't good. The prices were higher than folks in TV wanted to spend for a hot dog meal.

Bravo's is just OK and Paulie's Pizza is better, but to get either of them closer to what you get up north you have to tell them you want it well done. Pizza places seem to rush the pie out of the oven down here. If you look at the bottom of the slice without doing as I recommend, you see what I mean. You should see a little "black" on the bottom. Try it; you'll thank me. Next time you're in Paulie's tell them "well done"; you won't be sorry.

I would like to know what a REAL bagel is supposed to taste like.
This afternoon I had a Lenders bagel. (I don't know if it is a national chain or not) They are supposed to be kept refrigerated and they are smaller in size than some bagels I have had. These were onion and I toasted them in the toaster and spread with cream cheese. It was yummy.
I have had great BIG bagels and those that are really hard to bite through but not being a well versed bagel buyer I don't know which is what.
What are the qualities of a good bagel and how do YOU eat them and with what?
I am dangling something here and some gol darned grammarian will bonk my head.:duck:

At Katz's Deli on Houston Street:
Pastrami Club, a Knish, and a Dr. Browns Black Cherry Soda!!

Pardon my ignorance - where's Houston St?
(hate to ask what a Knish is; have heard of it but never saw it on a menu)(maybe I should just google it) Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knish
Knish doesn't look that great to me! However, the Black Berry Soda does! (sort of like a Dr Pepper)

Lower Manhattan. Pronounced Howstan, never like the city in Texas.
A knish with mustard and a soda from a sidewalk vendor used to be a very common lunch for me on busy work day.

Stephen:
It's nice to see that someone is good at customer service in knowing what needs to be corrected and run a business. It is good you corrected this situation immediately.
My father and mother was in the "luncheonette" business in the fifty's and sixty's. My mother was famous, (at least in our neighborhhod), for making great meatball wedges. My mother complained to my father that she could not make the wedge for 50 cents and she needed to make the wedge smaller. My father reply was, "don't cut back on what you give to people, we need to charge another nickel". They won't come back. In another words, don't nickle and dime people, they are not stupid and will notice the difference. He found that to be very true.
Prices sure have changed!
Good Job, Stephen. :BigApplause:

I tried Gandolfo's this evening. Had the I 'heart' New York - pastrami and corned beef. It was great! I liked it more than the comparable Too Jays sandwich. The sour cream potato salad is first rate. If you go there, be aware that the servings are generous.

Thank you all for giving us a try. We appreciate the business so much. If you go and have any bad experience, please feel free to let us know. We can only correct those situations that we are aware of. The Villages support thus far has been outstanding and it is our pleasure to be a part of the community. "One Bite And You're There"!

My meatball hero sandwich was huge and quite good. The other people also liked their sandwiches.

As good as the simple chicken salad sandwich was...no pickle, no chips, no drink...no coupons, it was $8.00. I hope it makes it, and the NY people can get their deli items here that aren't offered elsewhere, but....the cost of the sandwiches say NO. Sorry, but I am afraid another business will "bite the dust."

From the size of the meatball sandwich I had a few weeks ago you would have to order two sandwiches at other places to equal the heft of the food you get at Gandolfo's.

I cheerfully pay $8 for a good Deli Sandwich.....
They can keep the pickle and chips. If it's piled high and the bread is good....ahh, what else do you need.:icon_hungry:

Three of us tried Gandolfo's on Wed for lunch. The pastrami was excellent but from either sitting in water or from the steam table, it was soaking wet which in turn soaked the hoagie roll. You could not ask for more meat on the sandwich. Our only observation was the roll could have been better. Both Quiznos and Subway have discovered that the bread makes their sandwich If Gandolfo's could find better rolls, they'd have a lock on a really good sandwich. Not complaining, just an observation.
