Happened to be looking at the Spanish Springs Web cam Sunday AM and noticed a large plume of black smoke on the hill way behind the theater. Any one know what that is all about? All I know is that it's not near my neighborhood.

I, too, noticed that plume of black smoke on the Spanish Springs and Lake Sumter Landing cameras. Like you, it is not near my neighborhood.

Anyone know what is going on?

Optical illusion I think. I think they are smudges on the camera lens. They don't seem to be going anywhere.

Russ, it would seem strange to have a smudge that would be alligned on two different cameras in two separate locations and seem to triangulate on the same spot. JMHO.
anyhoo, just thought it might be controlled construction burn or dump fire. seems pretty black and persistent. Been like that since around 9:30.

Not sure how you figure they are triangulated but you are certainly welcome to your opinion.

I cheat (but fairly) by using Bing Maps. From that it seems to be in the area slightly NW of Bonnet pond around that grove of trees.

mmmmm? could be they found our 'stash' or maybe are trying to 'smoke us out' :throwtomatoes:

It does not look like a smudge to me. At 2:14 they were different colors and at different angles.

Probably a wood burn.

Russ, on a quick aside, are you, as your name suggests, actually from Boston? Loved it when I happened to stop once when I was in Nashua but only town in the country have ever been totally, completely and helplessly lost in. Took me 10 hours to figure out how to get back to Nashua and my motel. LOL

Not from Boston proper. Live in a southern bedroom community between Boston and Prov.

But I'm 'in town' often for work and play. Great walking city.

Has anybody "hashed" this thing out yet?

Not to my knowledge. May have to wait for the Sun if they think it deserves notice. May have been some kind of controlled burn or scrap from construction.

Whatever was burning yesterday is burning again today. Camera at SS is angled away today but LSL camera shows the smoke again.

Very visable smoke plume!

what's the hovering red dot to the right of the 'smoke'? that's been there for days along with the smoke.

Can someone onsite please clear this up?

Think that might be a smudge or dirt on the lens. it was still there after the smoke dissipated yesterday.

Really getting curious now. Looks like it moved east a few blocks today.

I have a novel idea - how about someone who lives there telling us what's going on. Is it smoke or is it just camera eye tricks?

Whatever your smoking - save some for me! :)

Just kidding around.

Did the Apostrophe :police: say, "whatever your smoking"?

:coolsmiley: I'll have whatever you're smoking, dearest Russ!

Couldn't resist. Should have, but didn't.

I deleted the post since I don't want to be rude. Just having some fun. But if I kept the post I would have noticed and corrected. I think!

Take a look now: http://www.thevillages.com/lifestyle/cam_ss.asp

7:17 5/4

The 'smoke' is hovering :)

It's a smudge on the camera that is visible depending on the lighting etc.

Russ, I think you would have too. I didn't think your post was rude and I didn't mean for mine to be, but now I feel bad. I would delete my post quoting your post except now you quoted my post quoting your quote. So, if you delete your post quoting my post quoting your post, I'll delete my post quoting your post.

Geez, I've made myself dizzy.

I will be down at SS tomorrow and I will look for the smudge or smoke or whatever. Will someone at LSL please do the same?

I looked at the LSL Web cam a number of times yesterday before posting the picture and the smoke plume kept changing.... it looked like a fire the was burning.

Didn't get a chance to look today...not sure if it was still there.

Cats, yes

Russ posted the link above. (It's http://www.thevillages.com/lifestyle/cam_ss.asp )

I think you will need to copy and paste this link into your browser. Otherwise, it probably will go to Yahoo. This link takes you to the Spanish Springs square. However, there is a link just below the cam that takes you to the Lake Sumter Market Square.

Too late tonight to be able to see. If you view the cams in the early evening, say 5:30 p.m. or later, but before dark, you'll see lots of activity.

OR you can go to the villages company website, and simply click on the temperature at the top right corner of the home page, and voila!! At the bottom of the cam picture, you can toggle between the two squares.

OK Russ. Yesterday afternoon while the "plume of smoke" was appearing in the LSL web camera, I dropped by the square to have a look see.

First, here's a shot of the camera (black dome):

http://edv100.home.comcast.net/~edv100/the-villages/m_dscn0855.jpg

And here are a couple of shots looking across the lake. And as you can see, no smoke. So I'm sure it's just some tiny debris stuck to the dome on the camera that moves about with the wind:

:clap2: Debris or not debris? That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler......... . If someone was near Glenview or El Santiago golf course, they could look around and resolve this whole question. If there is something burning up there, should be visible. Great pix EdVin, thanks.

It's back at 11:30 am !! I would bet it is debris clearing fire as earlier in the day the smoke was not visible. It is not anything on the camera cover because if you watch it for a few minutes you can see it move around by the wind. On the SS cam there is a smudge on the cover in the upper right section.

A couple of weeks ago I was playing golf at Tierra Del Sol and when we got to the 11th tee we noticed a controlled burn in the field west of the tee. Judging from that location on the map it looks to be due north of LSL.

North of LSL? Hmm, maybe the Morses are going to develop "the white space" on the map. That would be interesting.

Actually, PT they did. That's where they live at least some of the time. If you bring up that area in Google Earth you can actually see Gary and Mark's home and some of the other influential folks who are/were part of the development of TV.

Hi Ed,
I was kidding about the "white space". I know they have homes there. By "develop" I meant replacing the few homes with a few thousand.

Did I meantion that I'm just kidding.

Thanks for the pics Ed.

Where there's smoke there's fire.

No smoke - No fire!

LSL looks great.
