We closed on our place in Silver Lake on the 29th and won't be down right away to get keys, etc. Was wondering who are the utility suppliers are, I.E. Electric, water, sewer. I know Comcast is a supplier for cable & internet, anybody using AT&T for cable or DSL? Do electric and water require a deposit of any kind? So many ??

I think your power company is SECO but I won't swear to it. Most of the utility companies require a deposit if you haven't used them previously. It is refunded after one year if you've paid on time for that 12-month period. Your realtor should be able to tell you who your water/electric companies are. Your amentieis will cover the garbage and sewage.

Do make sure everything is in place for a smooth changeover, especially power and water. You'll end up with a moldy place to live without A/C around here and the neighbors frown on dried grass, although it is a bit more common on the historic side since many lawns have no sprinkler system whatsoever.

Forget AT&T -- they don't service TV. Your choices are ComCast, Embarq (now CenturyLink), the Dish and Direct TV. You don't have to get everything (cable, internet, phone) from one provider although you can usually get a deal by bundling. For phone, many don't even have a landline, just their cells. MagicJack and Vonage are also getting pretty popular.

Congrats on your purchase!

Thanks RW, that's what I thought but wasn't sure. First time we've done anything like this long-distance. TG for the internet and cell phones. Waiting for the signed dox to show up from closing but at the end of the day it is now OUR 'money pit'. Kind of reminds me of 'Mr. Blandings builds his drream house' and Jack Benny in 'George Washington Slept Here'. At least I don't have 'Pa Kettle' drilling my well. Ah, the joys of ownership. "Show me your credit card" Still, can't think of a better place to spend all my money.

You might ask the utility companies if they will accept a letter of good credit from your current utility (of the same type) in lieu of a deposit. Many will.

I live on the historic side, Country Club Hills to be exact and we use Progress Energy for our electric.

Is Silver Lake on the prehistoric side (Orange Blossom/Country Club Hills side)?
If it is then Progress Energy is your electrical company. We live in Country Club Hills and our electricity provider is Progress Energy. The customer service telephone number for Progress Energy is: 1.800.700.8744.

Our water/sewer/trash pick-up is through The Villages Center Service Area. Included in the water/sewer/trash bill is your month amenity charge. You pay it all together with one monthly bill. The number is: 352.750.0000

We just closed in January of this year. We didn't have to pay deposits on of our utilities. We also have utilities still on at our house in NC and it doesn't make a difference about deposits or having new utility service in another state (does that make sense?).

On the Talk of the Villages main page, near the bottom of the page, is a catagory called Nuts and Bolts. One of the members of this forum compiled a wealth of information about moving to and living in The Villages (TV).

:welcome: Now we're cookin' - someone movin' into the Village of Silver Lake! :coolsmiley:

Welcome to the neighborhood! We purchased 3/09 and just spent our first winter there - you're gonna love it! Are you close to the Webb Way pool and hot tub? We are just around the corner from the complex. We will be there in 2 wks for a month or so - might you be there then? - we'd be pleased to help you situate!

RW filled you in on cable/tele - but the electric co is Progress Energy in our area. Water, sewer, amenities is all billed by the villages. Prior to our closing, because we were going to be present for closing, I made all of the phone calls for utilities and services with the exception of pest control - did that after we got there. We closed at 10am and we were up and running by 5pm...turned off the tv and lites and went to celebrate over dinner!

I believe the elec co just needed to be notified of the service change to the new name and billing/mailing addys; the villages offices told me that the water never goes off - that they get notified of the name change from closing papers - but the woman appreciated my call so she could look for the paperwork and because we wanted bills sent to NJ. I think Waste Management get info post-closing and bills seperately every 3/4 mos. I used the Comcast 800 tele number rather than local FL office to set up installation date and service selection...did the same with CenturyLink. We arrived for the closing a few days before and stayed in local motel so we could shop for our furniture and set delivery dates. The entire process was as smooth as silk!

Lemme know if I can fill ya in on anything else.

:2excited: Depending on circumstances we might try to get down there for a week or so to settle some details (ID's, Gate passes, keys, Etc.) the week of the 9th or 16th. Our closing was a mail-away. We are over near the Jeffery gate. Just don't want the A/C off for any amount of time this time of year. May try to get FL licensing done for vehicles at the same time. Jersey shore is great in summer. Spent some time @ Tom's River and Atl. City when we were in Cherry Hill. Lot of good times were had by all. Also have to get the lawn squared away too. Lot of winter damage. :cus:

I'll pm you later this week once our plans are finalized - we're scheduled to arrive 5/14 after a graduation and mother's day in n.c. and a week in Hilton Head; so if you're there the week of the 16th we can share our limited adventures in the villages and a list of handi-helpers! We live on Tracy so we are a short golf cart away!

Go to the Nuts and Bolts section of TOTV and read the Moving to the Villages posts (three posts). Many of your questions will be answered there.

I drive thru the historic villages all the time and don't see much dried grass - everybody and I know there has sprinklers (including three homes with relatives).

Thanks 'Z' , have looked at those too and were very helpful. Lot of things covered. Been browsing around in TOTV for about a month or two and have learned a lot and am eager to get inside 'the bubble' and let the rest of the world take care of itself. I know, we can't do that but, seems calmer there. Just that the specific things that have to be taken care of long-distance can be a little daunting. Used to being on-site to handle that sort of stuff.
