Take a look at this:

http://www.navytimes.com/news/2010/05/military_restraint_medal_051110mar

Having done my time in the service of the USA and having been fortunate enough to meet some real heroes for their above and beyond the call of duty achievement, this proposal is about as ridiculous as it can get. An award for doing nothing?

When one goes above and beyond it is distinguishable by the very act performed.

The proposal is indicative of a totally disconnected society from what it takes to be meritorious in the service of one's country.

I personally feel it is an insult to those who really serve their country.

I understand the importance of protecting civilians. Another measure for our enemies of the length we will go to NOT accomplish the objective.

As has been stated before during wartime in a war zone people get killed, including the innocent. I am a proponent of doing what ever it takes to WIN!
I am not a proponent of reckless abandom when it comes to collatoral damage. Just as I am not a proponent of reward for constraint.

It goes against the purpose and training of what to do in a war zone and life threatening situation. I am opposed to reward for not taking the shot.
This does not translate into civilian execution to get the job done.

What do you think?

btk

PS I suppose this could be posted on another category other than political. But I wanted to take advantage of a non partisan issue.....I hope.

I'm afraid a lot of American soldiers will get killed needlessly. Soldiers have to make split second decisions. It's kill or get killed. I'm sorry about civilians getting killed, but as they say, war is hell.

A soldier would be foolish to risk his life in a situation where you cannot tell the civilian from the enemy. There is no way I would have risked my life when I served in hopes of winning a medal. I would always take care of myself first, and nature gives the instincts to a person to accomplish just that. I wouldn't go into a ditch to avoid hitting an animal and I would'nt receive fire and not respond, no matter what the situation.
