Being all the Guard shacks are there just to create the perception of security, which is a joke, why spend a million dollars to put a toilet in the one at Shea gate, such a waste. Get a Porta-a-Potty!

Sure, they'll put it up right in front of the flower bed. Such a lovely adornment for the neighborhood, I'm sure they'll all be happy.

Once again, common sense won't prevail. I wonder which connected plumber will get the lucrative contract. I'm sure it will be air conditioned and have a padded toilet seat, and telephone.

The estimate was $135K to $165K. You are only off by about an order of magnitude.

That still seems rather expensive? This isn't NASA.

What do you base your opinion on? How much do you think it costs to run sewer and water pipes from the main line to the guard shack? How much to install the plumbing for the toilet and sink? How much for the hot water heater? How much to do the actual building of the room, which currently doesn't exist, in the limited amount of space available to build it?

It's not just a matter of putting up 4 walls and a tin roof in the middle of the road and bolting a toilet down to the floor. The thing needs plumbing, and that means ripping the street up, installing the pipes, restoring the street after the pipes have been placed, etc. etc.

That stuff isn't cheap. Not nasa expensive, but this isn't a DIY job.

I wonder if they could install a bidet and a urinal. How about a small fridge and microwave oven?

Just your opinions. Neither of them is very good.

We must have it pretty good here if this is all we have to worry about.

Look up the building permit. That might give you the info you want on costs.

:bigbow:Maybe you should spend a night shift in one if them to see if it increases security. All you'll need is a large bucket to get you through the night.

The fact that there are dozens of whole homes for sale in the area costing less than that, and I suspect that they all have hot and cold running water, sewers and walls. Certainly, retro-fitting adds to the cost, but $165,000?

Not really cause once one gate gets one they all will, have to have one, just like the chair lifts at pools

Incinerating Toilet (Flush here) (http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/green-tech/sustainable/waterless-toilet2.htm)

Incinerating toilets can also be waterless. Instead of breaking down waste biologically, these toilets torch it. They send the waste to an incinerator, where it's burned to sterile ash.

The toilet sits in your bathroom and has an electric exhaust pipe that exits through your roof. To run, it needs batteries or can be plugged into a wall outlet. You use the toilet normally, toilet paper and all. But before you flush, you must close the lid, for reasons that will soon be clear. Next, you decide whether to press the "urine" or "[solid] waste" button on the control panel.

An Ecojohn setup costs about $4,000.

Beyond that, you also pay for propane. Ecojohn says fuel for its toilets costs eight to 10 cents per flush.

Perhaps they'll add a bidet for the ladies???

Wouldn't that justify the price??? :girlneener:

So if they have to flush twice it would cost as much as 20 cents?
(Ya know what I mean, right??!?)

OMG! Soooooo expensive to take a . . . . . . .

You may be able to see the quote once they have a contract in place (I don't know where they are in the process). Without seeing the quote, you really have no idea what the scope of the work is.

While I am not sure what color of money they are going to use, one way of looking at it is about $2.50 per home. I am good with that.

That still seems rather expensive? This isn't NASA.

So, you are saying that a building that is occupied 24hrs a day should not have a bathroom? And that is common sense???

What did the do for the first 30 years? No single person in there for 24 hours. Maybe the need to hire younger gate Guards?

Interesting how much resistance there is to such a key need for a job that serves you. What if your place of work didn’t offer that? You want to golf, you want things organized, but you don’t want bathrooms for the employees?

He locked the door and left the post unattended while he walked back and forth to the convenience store at the corner of 27/441!

Right. I am surprised the subject of liability has not come up. An employee has to walk down the street to go to the bathroom. Or, maybe it has. Maybe that is why it is being done.

Maybe there shouldn't be any public bathrooms at any of the town squares, and bathrooms in restaurants should be employees-only.

Either that, or whichever house is closest to those gates, should allow the gate guard 24/7 access to their home to use their personal bathroom.

Or...maybe...just maybe...a bathroom in the building where the employee works, is a good idea.

It will probably be a "Bring your own toilet paper" setup. Won't be a line item in the budget for "TP"

As a gate attendant my self I am shocked at your responses. I am sure before retiring here you all held jobs. Maybe your offices didn't have all the luxuries of a Manhattan skyscraper but I'm sure you were provided with at least a toilet.

:bigbow: Dave thank you for what you guys and gals do for very little pay. Rest assured a large majority of residents appreciate you.

You must have heard the saying "Haters are going to hate." Don't let them get to you. The way I would think about it is if they are complaining about you, they are giving someone else a break. And remember some don't even live here and for others The Villages is a vacation destination.

:coolsmiley: Keep up the good work and THANKS!

This has been an issue since I've been reading TOTV'S. They deserve a Rest Room, there is no way and no words that can be used to deny it so where is the rub? It is dangerous to walk to The Shell for a Bathroom Break by day or at night. Cut the Bologna and get the job done. CWGUY is correct, the majority of the Community respect the job the attendants do for us. I feel sorry for the attendant who's been holding the feeling till this gets resolved! Whew!

The Job can be completed from beginning to the first flush in 3 weeks, 4 tops.

Ain't that the truth. And they just can't help themselves but to show it to everyone.
