We built in 2003 and will be retiring full time this November. Can someone explain the proper procedure for registering our car and in what order should it be done.
All help will be greatfully appreciated

yo Mr. big, if you look down at the very bottom of the list of forums, you will see one called "nuts & bolts". This is a must read for anyone moving to the villages. I believe it will answer your question, and probably some others you haven't thought to ask yet. Best of luck to you & yours on your move.

The nuts and bolts info is good. But, the DMV is particular on paperwork. In case you want to register a car that you don't have with you, you need to make sure that you have the title, a form verifying the VIN and mileage...signed by a police officer and all owners, an application for title...signed by all owners, proof of insurance valid in Florida (I had to switch companies), and copies of a drivers' license for all owners. The forms can be found on the DMV website. But, first, you should get your Florida Drivers License (at least one owner). For that you should have your Social Security Card (or something else documenting your SSN), your passport or birth certificate, and drivers license from the state you are leaving.

The DMV website (make sure you get the official one) has pretty good information on all of this. The process is reasonably easy if you bring all the right paperwork. No tests to take.

Oh yes, also bring about $50 for the drivers license and about $400 for the vehicle registration and license fees. They don't take Visa, but they do take checks.

$400 for registration of a vehicle? They don't charge sales tax on a state transfer do they? Without sales tax that number seems high. Any idea why so high?

When I registered my car in Fla two years ago the fees were $25.25 (like the song) for the drivers license and $100 for vehicle title transfer and registration.

(you need insurance issued in Fla - get that first. The insurance company wants a copy of your Fla Drivers License but will issue the insurance without it and give you ninety days to provide it to them)

It is a one time fee. After that the annual fee to get a sticker for the car is approximately $75.00. Fortunately, no annual excise tax like Massachusetts. Interesting point, after 5 years, Florida sends a new license plate instead of a new sticker.

I recently ordered a book from the State of Florida - $12.00 possibly plus shipping - I think it was $15 total. I believe it's called "Establishing Florida Residency" or something similar. Got it from the official State of Florida website. I think it's worthwhile although am sure you can find most of the info on zcaveman's post on Nuts & Bolts and elsewhere online. Just thought it would be nice to have it all in one place so I could refer to it as needed.

If I could put my hands on it at this moment I'd give you the actual website, but I can't find the book at the moment . . .

I am more of a book person than a computer person and just like to have reference books handy. The computer types among us probably just save all relevant stuff to a file.

Sorry, I've been away from the site for a few days. The link provided by MelZ works. Here it is again:

The "How Do I" links on that page are where the info is.

I recently went through the process and wrote a check for $806 for titles and plates for two vehicles. Next year it should be around $75 each. I think they charge a stiff fee for using Amex or Mastercard. No Visa's taken.

I made an appointment on line to get my Florida driver's license. I have to go to Lady Lake. Where do I go to register my car? I live in Sumter County.

You can go to the office in Wildwood for registration. It is in the shopping center that Ace hardware is in but at the opposite end. I got my license there as well. Just walked in and was out in about 20 min. with both.

AND you can also register to vote and sometimes there's a AAA rep sitting in the lobby to sign you up for that also. Gosh they make things so easy for us here!

We registered a car last year and did not change our driver's license. To register the car you must first change your insurance and then go to the Tax Collectors office at the corner of Morse and 466. (where the sheriff's office is) Bring the car and not the golf cart because they do go out and look at your car. Yes, it was about $400 to register the car. We were served immediately with a " sugar why don't you come over and sit right here." Even the Tax Collectors office in TV makes you feel you are in a wonderful dream!
