View Full Version : New hair cut pricing at Cal’s

I’ve been a customer at Cals in Brownwood for over 2 years now. I get my short hair dry cut for 17+ tip. She spends about 12 minutes with me. Today I was informed that as of Sept. 3rd, prices will go up to 28 dollars for wash and cut...no blow dry. I was a bit taken back. Going from 17 to 28 PLUS extra to blow dry is a big difference. I could see if wash, cut and blow dry was offered for 28 but without blow dry is a lot. They will no longer offer the dry (spray bottle wet) hair cut. Now...before you tell me how cheap 28 is for a wash and cut, it’s not where I come from. I paid that for full service. Once again, because we live in the villages we get taken advantage of for women’s services. Time to find a hair cut for 28.00 inclusive of wash, cut and blow dry.

This seemed a little unreasonable as Cal's just raised the price for basic ladies wetting, cut, blow dry from $15 to $17 2 years ago...after being $15 for quite a while.

I just called Cal's at Colony and asked about this rumored price increase. They said there is no pending price increase for basic wetting, cut, and blow dry. They did say if you went to Brownwood or Spanish Springs and got the "full" shampoo, cut, Style, blow dry then that price is $28.

So, I think this one is a bad rumor or a misunderstanding.

It’s not a rumor as my stylist at Brownwood Cals told me the same thing about the price increase. I might start going to the new Bellagio at 1562 Bella Cruz Dr between the hospital and Publix.

So, if they no longer offer the less expensive service and you can only buy the more expensive service, do we consider that a price increase?

As for the mens cuts, it appears that the time allowed for a cut was shortened, from 15 minutes to 10 minutes, I may be wrong, this is just an observation from my last 2 visits.

So if they get to 10 minutes and they're not finished yet, what happens? Do they send you out with 3/4 of a haircut and make you pay the full price? Or do they charge for each minute over 10? Who's responsible if the stylist is just lagging and slow that day - maybe they didn't have their latte that morning or something.

The management at Cal's has been pressuring the barbers to meet a tight schedule for quite a while now. A barber at Cal's I went to never met the time criterion they wanted but I never had to pay extra. He finally left Cal's. I still go to him.

I’ve been going to Cal’s for almost 13 years....and prices have increased. I go to the shop in LSL. There it’s just haircuts....dry or with the spray bottle. Don’t believe they do shampoos so we may not see an increase in pricing. Coming from CA, even at what is charged today, I still pay less than I did in CA. It’s something we as individuals do, compare things, events, prices, to what we had before moving to this area.....time passes, prices go up and maybe some of what we remember, has also changed. Might you consider a different Cal’s? Personally I prefer not to have a shampoo....tough on the neck.

Cal's didn't work out too well for me. I asked for an Uncle Fester and the reply was HUH? I said you know a Buzzer at a zero level then shave the entire operation clean. Nope, not interested. I asked why he said it's about time. I offered to pay double and still got a NO!

Cal's worked out great for Mrs. Nucky. What cost her $80 in Jersey was about $18 at Cal's. She ended up following the lady when she went elsewhere because of a showdown with someone at Cal's, I didn't get the details.

For comparison purposes: Mens' current haircut cost in ABQ, NM $14, CDM, CA $20. They are both 20 minute haircuts and the barbers trim eyebrows and ears if you want. The women I know in Newport Beach pay anywhere from $80 to $250 and occasionally a little more which includes adding body, coloring, highlighting, streaking, cutting off split ends, and so on. Almost all of the women I know in Southern California prefer to wear their hair "blonded" (lol), shoulder length or longer.

I really don’t need a shampoo either. I really like the spray bottle wet down and cut. I don’t need a blow dry either as I always go home and shower right after to rinse all the prickly hair off me. I’d be happy with no change...😊

Reasonable considering what some pay for a bottle of water; pack of cigarettes; gallon of gas;

Very reasonable when compared to Rx pricing/gouging!!!!

Everybody wants to get a raise in pay....and even more support giving more money to those who serve us.....There is no secret where the money is going to come from to pay more to those who serve.........right?

I can still remember 5 minutes in the chair and the Loud VOICE. " NEXT " all inside 5 minutes.

What Cal's Barber Shop needs is a wake-up call in the form of competition, and from what I understand that will never happen.

Maybe Cal's in Brownwood read about the VIP tent and are seeing what the Market will accept. To get a haircut from the correct person is Priceless.

You really did a public service by alerting others. You should be commended. Now the customers won't be Stroking Out when the price is higher and they find out when they get to Cal's. Now they know in advance and can make their decision.

All the heads to cut coming from the other side of the Pike. Do the math, a couple of bucks here & there will add up for the Brownwood Businesses. Haven't heard much about empty stores and all that kind of thing down that way lately? What's up with that? Someone is Snoozing!

It's NOT speculation. Was told by a stylist they will no longer offer just the cut but from (whenever the date is) it will be a hair-wash, then the cut and style. But wasn't told the cost as it wasn't known at the time. I think they may be shooting themselves in the foot as many women have short hair that doesn't need styling. So perhaps will be losing some of their business. There's always Cost Cutters, Fantastic Sams and others like that. BUT then you run the risk of not having the same person each time as they tend not to stay.

I was told the same thing. The barbers (mostly men) can still do dry cuts for $17.00, although rumor is they don't like to cut women's hair. While the stylists can still do a dry cut the price will be $28. I was also told that it's only the Brownwood location. Isn't that interesting? For the smart-mouth that suggested we go buy clippers @ Wal-Mart...if you have nothing positive to contribute then please don't say anything @ all. Due to some small SK's on my scalp (which I'm not willing to remove yet) I don't want someone else vigorously washing my hair. I don't need to pay for that service. Unfortunately for my stylist of 2+ years I didn't make my next appointment. She knows why. Not sure what I'm going to do.

It's true. I go to Brownwood and there has been a notice posted on every operators mirror and it will be more than $28 there. I think it will be $32 or $34. Add a tip and it gets very pricy. I paid $73 before the tip in Ohio. It was an excellent hair cut and I would pay it again for an excellent haircut but the haircuts here are mediocre at best. I've been here 10 years and have seen at least 24 stylists. If I could cut my hair I would.

I have tried various barbers and am tired of getting a 15 minute quickie haircut. Charging $15 for a haircut these people are getting at least 3 + haircuts per hour = $45 per hour. Now I know they have to either pay for their chair, or a part of the cuts, but they are making a lot of $ and it is Impossible (!) to give a professional haircut in that time limit unless you are really concentrating and working hard. Is there a place to get a professional haircut with a barber who takes his time.

Since I don’t have that much hair left so I just have my wife snip it back for me every couple of months for free. Plus, a bottle of shampoo seems to last forever, so I got that going for me :). It seems like the only hairs on my head that aren’t falling out are the ones that turned grey. Not sure what happened to that head of thick, curly brown hair I used to have way back when?

I used to have curly blonde hair as toddler, then it went brown. Still not gray but have little of it on top. Had tried a comb over a while but it looked really ridiculous.

I had toyed with the idea of getting it cut at the Buffalo Barber Shop a few days ago where I had driven my Mom and Dad to each get $15 cuts, but I had had mine cut there a few months back and like to delude myself that I can still pull off a realistic comb over.

I used to go to Cal's in Brownwood but my stylist left. I found that the new place in Trailwinds Plaza on 466a is quite good and the cost is the same as I previously paid at Cal's. I don't need "fancy" and I can wash my own hair prior to the appointment. So unless things change with these folks, I'll stick with them for now. There are plenty of places around this community where one can get a haircut.

My previous shop up North scheduled male cuts every 20 minutes. They did a terrific job in 20 minutes and charged $20. 3 x 20 = $60 + tips. In TV if they schedule every 15 minutes a male cut and charge $17 x 4 = $68 + tips. Draw your own conclusions assuming equal skilled Barbers - or not. If you want golf cart assessable, your options are limited.

Interesting opinion. So your position is that the Morse family intentionally conspired to create a monopoly for a few barber shops in exchange for "kickback $$$$"? OK, put yourself in their position. How much money would it take for you to blatantly violate at least half a dozen laws risking significant jail time and millions of dollars in fines when you are already worth over a billion dollars. Then ask yourself if you think a few barber shops could generate that much in "kickback $$$$"
So, you can put me in your basket of "totally ignorant or downright stupid" individuals, I'm honored to be placed there (despite an IQ of 178):1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

For the very obvious reason that I have mentioned, I go elsewhere. One Barber Shop in The Villages... c'mon ya gotta be totally ignorant or downright stupid to wonder " WHY ".

For me the obvious.......Kickback $$$$$$

Here's a question. Do some people live here simply because they want to look for something to be unhappy about?

I was a hairdresser and can tell you that a dry cut is not as good as a wet cut. Wet hair is easier to control while cutting than dry hair is. I wouldn't do a dry cut when I was working. I didn't want my name on a bad cut.

There are no stylists in The Villages who are worth $80 to $250 and I have been to about 23 of them.

My friend's husband gets his hair cut at Market's of Marion. I think she said it is about $12, takes about 10-15 minutes, and it looks good.

Where I come from a lease is not a “kickback”.

Well I'm no longer an expert on anything. I've only been there just once and do not remember. Are the barbers/stylists at Cal's independent contractors or employees? As independent contractors they would most likely pay booth rent. Please educate me about the pricing there, does management set the prices? I do know that the lease rates for any business in any of the village owned properties aren't the cheapest, so the price increase might just reflect that. Last time I checked a business is entitled to make a profit.

I would think that Cal's barber shop would operate just like a real estate office. They are not employees but independent contractors. The owner provides the building, the chair and sink, a cashier, pays the utilities, advertising and any other overhead. The owner can then receive payment in one of two ways. He collects a percentage (a commission) from each sale, the barber keeps his tips, or he charges a flat monthly fee for each space, which is the way Remax Realty operates or did. BTW, I've cut my own hair since 1989, it's not hard to do.

I carpool to Big Al's once a month with my neighbor. Men's haircut is $8.00, and every Monday there is a $1.00 off coupon in the paper. I've never waited more than ten minutes, and most times I am in the chair immediately. Never had a bad haircut there.

" Big Al's ? Stopped going to that place years ago. I compared Big Al's to the Barber Shop at every military base. Zip, Zip, Zip approx. 7 minutes …. followed by NEXT..... :doggie:

:icon_wink: So what's that..... like maybe 3-4 people ahead of you? :1rotfl: You're not the Villager I heard about (true story) going in with 8 coupons and wanting a haircut..... are you? I also heard there is another barber shop on 441 closer to the Villages that has a sign out "We fix $8.00 haircuts!" :coolsmiley:

No, most of them were unhappy complainers long before they moved here:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

I like being able to make an appointment. Had a guy in Wildwood, then he moved to Sumterville, then he got into an accident and hurt his back, now looking for another "barber" that makes appointments.

BTW, I cut my hair with a 3 bladed Schick razor in the shower; the only cost is the blade and probably two more minutes of water; it's as slick as a baby's behind.

I have been going to Cal’s in Brownwood for years (I am a woman) and have never gotten a cut for $17 or anywhere near that or are these prices for men?
