View Full Version : Military Service Roll Call?

I thought it might be interesting to have a roll call of sorts of those who have served in any branch of the Military. I'll start it off.

Just back from the ceremonies at The Villages Memorial Park. Always a good show.
U.S.Army 1959-1988.
Drafted. Basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in the middle of winter = Bah!
OJT as cadre to newly formed HQ unit 6th Artillery Group at Fort Bliss, TX.
My sergeant there - a crusty old Master Sergeant who'd been around since "Christ wore knee pants" and knew everyone "worth knowing" in the chain of command - made sure that my required Reserve time be spent as a commissioned officer.
So, my first two week summer camp at Camp McCoy, WI, at the end of July 1962. I became hooked and served in a variety of Army Reserve units, including a two-star headquarters command until 1978.
Went on full-time active duty as AGR (Army-Guard Reserve) for six years right at home in St. Louis.
Retired as Lieutenant Colonel, USAR. Receive just over 11 years' active duty retirement pay, which helps me afford all my travel!
Wouldn't have missed it for the world. And, when I meet with officers who actually served "in the trenches," I can't match their stories, but have some weird ones of my own!

Completed 49 years, 7 months, 23 days of continuous service to the Air Force on the 7th of May, just a week prior to heading to the Villages where we have been all of two weeks. Enlisted in September of 1960 and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1986, went to work the following day as a Civil Servant, retiring in December 2001, and again, the following day went to work as a Contractor on an AF contract until last month when I quit work on the 7th of May and the 14th the moving van was "Villages bound'. I started in personnel and the last 2/3s in Logistics Plans in too many places to mention. Spent the Cuban crisis here in Florida at Macdill AFB and the Vietnam era found me at Tan Son Nhut AB.

My husband was in the US Army 1976-79 active. Took basic in Ft. Knox, stationed in Ft. Meade and then on to Schwaback, Germany. Then the Reserves for many years. He was a 52 D generator specialist.
My 91-year-old father was in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was part of the great 93rd Bombardment Group better known as Ted's Flying Circus.
My two brother-in-laws served during the Vietnam War. One was in the Army. The other, a Marine, was a POW and given a Purple Heart.
Thank you and God Bless each of you here who allow me the privilege and freedom to post my views and opinions on this forum in this great country. Your service and the service of your loved ones fills my eyes with tears of pride.

My husband was in the US Army (1967-1969) where he served in Vietnam as a Forward Observer and was awarded the Bronze Star. He survived unharmed only to pass away last year from non-Hodgkins Lymphoma which the VA has classified as a service-related disability because of exposure to Agent Orange. We had 32 years together never even imagining something like this could happen 40 years later.

Your husband is a hero to me...I have an uncle who was on the Japanese death march and he is still with us at 91....I was in Vietnam and the WWII stories that he tells me ,gives me a much deeper appreciation for his generation and how tough they were and to the wives to, they kept the war effort in high gear back home....The woman of then were just as tough...

Hi there, My name's Bob - I'm a Brit with a vacation home in The Villages and served in the Royal Air Force for 30 years. I'm only a youngster at 63 so missed all those early 'punch ups' but have read a great deal about the 'Bomber Boys' of WW11. Please pass on to your husband from a Brit, my congratulations first of all on making it through because I know a lot didn't, and secondly my thanks for what he did over Germany to help make my generation free. Very Best Wishes to you both. Bob.

Best thing I ever did, everyone should be required to serve - makes ya really know how good we have it in the U.S.A.I agree that everyone should serve, but not everybody can. I tried to enlist in both the Air Force and the Army but couldn't pass the physical for multiple reasons. Even the draft would not approve me. Dispite not serving I'm proud that I at least tried.
It would have been nice and I would have loved it if they had a program or special classification for those to serve in a capacity that befitted their physical limitations that otherwise disqualified them. To all of you who did serve, my whole-hearted thank you and gratitude!

Question for Sydney - would you recommend your 18-year old granddaughter for full time AF - Communications - air traffic control? She wanted to become a pilot but was told she is not tall enough. Both you and your wife had experience with that and my granddaughter after HS graduation is headed for boot camp on July 4 (her 18th birthday). I am apprehensive but proud of her. One of my nephews just completed 21 years in the Navy and one nephew is still in the Navy. This is an interesting thread - thanks to all of you who served this great country of ours. I apologize if I have posted this in the wrong place but who better to reach out to then fellow veterans about this foundation.
As we all welcome the news of the death of Osama Bin Laden and Americans congratulate our Country and especially our Military, I thought it would be a good time to consider all of us giving back a bit to those that made this event possible.
Special Operations Units of the Military (Delta, Seals, Green Beret, Air Force and Marine Special Forces) have made this day possible. Although many times they are forced to operate in the shadows and avoid taking credit for their actions.
I ask that you take a look at the following link: www.specialops.org to learn of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. This foundation has received a 4 star rating from Charity Navigator for the last 5 years (Only 5% of charities qualify for this distinction).
The Special Operations Warrior Foundation provides full scholorship grants and educational and family counseling to the surviving children of Special Operations personnel who die in operational or training missions and immediate financial assistance to severely wounded Special Operations personnel and their families.
I ask that you consider making a donation to this worthwhile charity as a small way for us to show our gratitude. Thanks.

I couldn't agree more. I made reference to Special Ops in another thread relating to Bin Laden and gave a capsule overview of special ops, didn't intend it to be all inclusive, just for those that thought of "water" with the Seals, not a Special Ops 101. Special Ops, because of it's appropriate cloak, does not receive it's due. I'll add this to my recently instituted Wounded Warriors contributions.
