I don't know if this is the proper place to post this or not, but this seems like the place to start things when you can't figure out a better place.

Is anyone here familiar with the cold-cut sandwich that I used to get as a kid when we lived in Philadelphia known as a Hoagie? I've had many people say "Oh yeah, a cheese-steak". NO!!! Not a cheese-steak! I'm talking about a cold-cut sandwich with several types of meat and cheese and VERY thinly sliced onions and God knows what else and finished with either oil and vinegar or italian dressing. I know some of you old folks know of what I speak. I lived in Philadelphia over 50 years ago, but I can still remember those sandwiches and nothing I have had since can hold a candle. We have gone to Philly a couple of times, but have not been able to find anywhere that made anything like them. I think mostly they were made in mom and pop deli's, but like I said, it's been over 50 years. Mainly, I want to know if there is anywhere in TV that has anything remotely close to this type of concoction. Subway doesn't count.

I thought I read somewhere on these boards that Jersey Mike's Subs had moved into the area of TV. We NJ folks love Jersey Mike's!!!!!!

Oh, I forgot to mention that the bread was a hard crust Italian type of roll.

Thanks to Google it's in the Rolling Acres Plaza Shopping Ctr. 674 North Hwy 27/441, Lady Lake Florida 32156. It's 6.4 miles(12 mins.) from Buena Vista Blvd.
I'm programming my GPS as we speak and wiping off the drool from the anticipated visit.:p

And later you can drive another half mile south and get a great ham sandwich at the Honey Baked Ham store near Kohl's.

(they also sell ham bones for use in soup)

Jersey Mike's subs are good, but they are no hoagie ! I used to get mine in Ardmore....as a matter of fact a few times we skipped out of school at lunch to go get a hoagie. Think it is all in the sauce they put on hoagies.

We are still selling our house and live in the western subs of Philly. Dont know what I'm gonna do without being able to get an Italian Hoagie when we move to TV. Hope this Jersey Mike's is as good as they are claiming, might have to open our own deli.

I live in Jersey near Philly, and miss my Italian hoagies, I went to Publix, and told them how to make one, and it wasn`t bad. I also found the best Italian sausage peppers, and onion sandwich at the little stand in front of Home Depot.

When we stay at TV we love getting a sub at Publix. They have a large selection of breads, meats and condiments. Delicious. Recently a NJ Mike's sub shop opened in our area and we were very disappointed as we had heard so much about them. Too expensive for what we got.

If you open your own deli and make a great Italian Hoagie, we'll be frequent customers (when we move to TV).

In Delaware, we call them Italian Subs.

I have always thought that the Italian sub at Publix was as close to anything I got in northwest Jersey. In fact I think it is better because I can add the jalepeno and banana peppers.

the hoagie has to have the right roll. amoroso's from philadelphia is the best roll; my brother-in-law takes bags of them back to las vegas when he visits the phila area.....that is how good they are.
am sure that you can make your won from decent lunchmeat from publix...but....ya gotta have the right roll!

You're probably right about having the right roll. I was hoping that with so many people from "The North" moving to TV, that someone would have figured a way to import them down South. As I've stated, it's been over 50 year since I had what I remember to be a hoagie. I have no idea of what type of meat was on them and if it is even available any more. You know, with all the FDA restrictions and all. Those meats and cheeses may have been from old family recipes and not allowed to be sold any longer. I sure do miss them though.

let's see: italian hoagie.....
provolone, salami, capicola, shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced tomatoes, raw onion, italian spices like oregano, and oil....never mayonnaise...
i wonder what i left out???
oh yeah, and a bottle of frank's soda, preferably black cherry wishniak!

I just ate and that makes my mouth water anyway. I have GOT to write those ingredients down and see if I can pig out later after I go to the grocery store. I'll bet our grocery store might not have some of those.

:a040: Up here we call them grinders and they use the same ingredients but add mortadella. I also think Publix makes a good sandwich and you can get it with Boars head meat. I get it with oil and put balsamic on it when I get home.

Back in my younger days when I worked at a neighborhood Submarine Sandwich Store all of the above was used and also boiled ham. One very important ingredient that was left off the list was wine vinegar along with the olive oil. And extra please:smiley: Living on the edge would use red pepper flakes for a little kick.

Mmmmmm.....can't wait to get a sub at Publix when we return to Florida this Fall.

Hubby is a big fan of subs (as we call them in Va)...and every so often I will indulge in one myself.... since he refuses to share...

Sure, we know what a "hoagy" or "grinder" is.....but why expend the syllables when you're hungry for a SUB!

Jeff.....you're right on the money...honey.....a sub isn't a sub....without the bread.....

It's all about the >>>> B R E A D

Phila does have the best hoagies; second to none! Had a few Primo hoagies when we were last there a couple of weeks ago. Phila's got the best sandwiches because they are not connected to org's like Subways, etc. I've had Jersey Mike's subs in TV and they are probably the best you're going to get IMO.

Well I've never been to Philly so I don't doubt their great, but I've got to give a shout out to Federal Hill in Providence, RI
(little Italy). Like Philly, local shops and restaurants who are proud of the product.

Depends where you came from but Hoagies, Grinders, Heros or Subs (not a Philly Cheese Steak) seem to all be similar. Try the subs they make at Publix. Sounds to me like they will put almost everything you mentioned on one of their subs.

I'm originally from the suburbs of Philly, and I know what you are craving. Believe it or not, the closest thing to a South Philly Hoagie can be purchased at the deli in Publix. You have to walk them through the process, but they will follow your directions, and you will love the results.

Ask them to pick the chewiest "sub" roll that they have, and tell them to put the oil on the split roll first (no vinegar, just oil). Then they need to cover the inside of the oiled roll with lots of oregano. Then they add the meat and cheese (be sure to ask for the "Italian Meats" and "Provolone Cheese".) It doesn't matter if it's Publix meat or Boar's Head meat...

Then add whatever ingredients you like: lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, onions, etc. Follow it up with a little more oregano. Close the roll, let the flavors mellow, and ENJOY!

It's the closest you'll get to a Philadelphia Amoroso roll hoagie!

Any one here ever stationed at Mc Guire AFB or Fort Dix in NJ in the late 60's? In Wrightstown there was a place called Martha's Hoagie Hop. It was hoagie heaven. This was way before Subway and the chain shops. In NY we used to have a shop called Grinders and Crushers. Grinders were the small ones and Crushers were the really big ones..

Ft Dix AIT in Fall of 1964. Air Force tested jet engines across the street from our barracks every day at 2 AM - sound and vibrations would scare the bejesus out of you (got used to it in about a week and never was an issue thereafter).
