I didn't see anything on here about the fight and death at the Coleman prison on August 6.
One person dead, 5 injured in a battle between white and black groups.
wow...... to close
One dead, several injured in fight at Coleman federal prison

Longstanding tensions between rival gangs at the federal prison in Sumter County — the nation’s largest — led to a fight Sunday that left one inmate dead and several others injured, according to the prison workers union chief.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons said in a statement that an “altercation between multiple inmates” occurred about 11:45 a.m. at the high-security unit of the Federal Correctional Complex-Coleman, about 50 miles northwest of Orlando.
Troi Venable, 39, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. Venable had been serving a 17-year prison sentence for assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to federal prison officials. He had been incarcerated at Coleman since December 2017.
“No staff injuries were reported and at no time was the public in danger,” prison spokesman Dale Grafton said.
Coleman is a sprawling complex of penitentiary units with five sections: two high-security institutions, a low and medium-security facility and a camp for female inmates.
Visitation has been suspended for the high-security unit, known as Coleman I, which houses more than 1,300 male inmates. In all, Coleman houses a total of 6,664 prisoners.
Joe Rojas, the union leader and a guard at Coleman, said Sunday’s fight was the latest in a series of dangerous incidents over the last several weeks between a primarily African American gang and a white supremacist prison gang.
“It was a black inmate that was stabbed by a white inmate," Rojas said of Venable, who was killed with a homemade knife.
Prisoners have been fighting in the recreation yard, ignoring commands from guards and refusing to go back into their cells, according to Rojas.
“That’s a sign that something big is going to happen,” he said, adding that lockdowns were briefly in place after each of the previous incidents but lifted too soon despite his objections.
Word has already spread about the deadly fight to inmates at other institutions, Rojas said, and there is concern among guards that violent retaliation is imminent.
“We’ve got two rival gangs fighting each other," he said. “That’s going to be really bad for us here because you know they’re going to want revenge."
Coleman has a history of prison riots, corruption scandals and is known for housing some of the nation’s most notorious criminals.
Former USA Gymnastics national team doctor and convicted serial child molester Larry Nassar and Amine El Khalifi, who convicted of a plot to bomb the U.S. Capitol, are currently serving sentences at the complex. Former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, a Jacksonville Democrat who represented a portion of Central Florida, is incarcerated there for her conviction on fraud charges.
Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger served a portion of his two life sentences at Coleman before he was transferred last year to another prison in West Virginia and was beaten to death by inmates there, authorities said.

"...dangerous incidents over the last several weeks between a primarily African American gang and a white supremacist prison gang."
Definitely a dangerous situation that could spread among other prisons...or even outside of the prison system.
It sure would be nice to have ALL public officials unconditionally condemn white supremacists...as well as other 'hate groups.' :ohdear:

Not totally accurate.
The Innocence Project (poke here) (http://www.innocenceproject.org/what-wrongful-convictions-teach-us-about-racial-inequality/)
Many of the consequences of how race affects the larger criminal justice system can be seen in innocence-related efforts. An analysis of the 297 DNA exonerations reveals minorities make up approximately 70% of those proven innocent through DNA testing. Similarly, African-Americans represent the vast majority of these exonerations – 63% of those exonerated by DNA testing.
Despite numerous studies depicting similar levels of participation by Whites, African-Americans, and Hispanics in non-violent crimes – notably drugs, weapon possession, and speeding –
Bureau of Justice statistics show minorities are arrested and incarcerated at higher rates for these crimes.
Given these FACTS, it's not hard to understand why white supremacist groups (in or out of prison)...are so prevalent. :ohdear:

With 60,000 plus homes we’re going to have 100,000 more people many retired, vulnerable. It makes sense to me to buy up the Coleman prison properties have the institute relocated.

With all due respect..."Relocated" to where?
Even for the very wealthy/politically powerful...NIMBY has its limitations.
Particularly because (according to OP's cut/paste), it is one of the largest prisons in the country.

Not sure I follow your logic. Why not have them condemn ALL prison gangs. Make it crime to belong to any gang while incarcerated. What you're saying in that one gang is worse than the others or one gang is better than the others. In my experience that is just not so. They are equally rotten.

That's certainly NOT my intention, as I totally agree that ALL prison gangs...should be condemned.
I was speaking specifically to this situation, based on the reporting that the white supremacist gang member...initiated the murder of the other gang member.

Relocate... when we came for our Lifestyle visit, we visited all of the coast of Florida (both sides) to see where we really wanted to be. While going from Naples to Key Largo we passed a correctional facility in the midst of the Everglades. Many alligators and some crocodiles around, perfect location, less need for security....

The 'middle of nowhere,' without any nearby population/infrastructure...is definitely a plus toward isolating the incarcerated.
Maybe not so much however, for the thousands of people (and their families) it takes...to run/operate/oversee the system.
On Edit: This whole issue is similar to those who protest jet noise next to airports or trains blowing their horns at crossings, even though they were there...long before the homeowner moved in.

:icon_wink: I agree..... but that is a bad analogy to use on this site. If you know anyone that's been a member for awhile they can explain. :)

No where in the report was the word initiated used. So we have no idea who "initiated" this gang fight. It did say an “altercation between multiple inmates” but does not include anything about who started what.

Incredible Paranoia ! You have more chance of being run over and killed by a golf cart than from someone locked up in a maximum security prison.. For pete's sake

Not so much paranoia, at least on my part. Distaste, is more like it. When you buy a home, location is very important. Unless you are working there, how many people like the idea of the location of their home near a prison? Like that’s something to write home about.
I guess the houses will be sold to those who don’t mind.
Still, hope springs eternal....

If you don't like the idea of living near a prison, don't buy a home near a prison.
Buying the home then expecting the prison to be moved (at the developer's expense) doesn't make sense.

If Mr Schwartz did not have a vision, there would be no Villages. Will you allow Velvet her vision? It would not make sense for the developer to pay for the prison unless they could pass the cost on. I haven’t figured out that part of the picture yet. But I’m thinking about it.

Doesn't it seem that the only people who bring up the prison are those who don't live near the prison. It's almost as if they are trying to convice people that they made a mistake by buying south.

I recently read The Villages owns property one mile away from Coleman. Now THAT is just too close for comfort for me.

Living near a prison wouldn't bother me at all. I guarantee it's far more dangerous to walk the streets of Orlando than it is around the prison. When was the last time someone escaped a Federal Penitentiary and killed someone in the local community?

I like the new area myself, even if it is far from Barnes and Nobles. After a few years of enjoying my neighbors at Mallory and the bookstore I can see hubby wanting to moving south. There are so many good things developing in the area it is exciting, and it gives the landscape time to mature a bit too.

A fight or altercation is typically not an isolated event that randomly occurs. Most likely, it is the result of an accumulation of smaller (albeit increasingly larger) incidents that haven't been managed effectively. So, in that sense, it doesn't matter who "initiated" this fight...
Our penal system hasn't figured out how to "rehabilitate" people so they can become a productive member of our larger society upon release. We have a long way to go.

You have control of where you live, if you feel un safe near Coleman, it’s ok. As for many that had homes near prisons, or worked in the system, it’s not a big deal.
So no worries, you can keep your comfort zone, homes will sell just as they have sold for many years.
