Hurricane Dorian
How are you preparing???
Based on current projected forecast released on 08/28/2019, Hurricane Dorian is on a current path that will "possibly" affect The Villages.
Hurricane Dorian "may" make landfall as early as this Sunday night "near" The Central Florida coastal area and Hurricane Dorian may intensify to a Category 3 Hurricane.
What precautions are you guys taking????

What ever one needs...get it now before The Villages storm mania starts.
I never understand why the get ready for a storm is such a major event. Especially for most of us who have been around a few years.
We have and have had our storm cache and only have to top off gas long before the mania starts.

We went to the Hurricane Preparedness last year and as far as I know, have done everything I learned to do. Including Flood Insurance. It's Cheap!
We even bought a generator and I have to finish breaking it in, another two hours and then change the Earl (Oil).
Then we're ready for action. Just waiting for our Buddy, Tuccillo to enter and give us some of his wisdom, weather-wise!

A cat 1? Nothing. We lived on a small island off of Fort Myers for 15 years. I don't get anxious unless it's a cat 3 or higher. Once, we had to evacuate. I am upset that it's heading this way, because we moved further north and to higher ground (we were 5 feet above sea level) to get away from them. We had hurricane shutters, but the only good they did, when there was a storm surge, was to keep out the fish. We picked TV because it never took a direct hit. They're following me ;-)

Got notification on my email about the storm from Village Insurance just now and what to do. Talk about being considerate! Each time another little surprise tells me how lucky I am to be part of TV.

Just wondering :ohdear: if the pre-hurricane hysteria is as prevalent here in The Villages as in some parts of the state where people who have never experienced bad weather will inundate the local markets right before the bad weather approaches and wipe-out the shelf's of everything?
Hopefully Dorian turns out to be nothing more than a bad storm. Now is the time to prepare your family, not hours before the storm strike.

Hysteria seems to happen mostly with newbies that haven't experienced it. Though with Irma it took "forever" and we kept hearing about it for, what seemed like weeks, so folks were quite hyped over it. We've lived here 10 yrs and Irma was the only one (which "they" said never happens this far in-land). We didn't have damage where we live, nor power outages or flooding. Some did but it seemed to be more in the historical side...plus golf courses (flooding).
As for prep...stock up with food that's not perishable, water, batteries, weather radio and your medications. Oh--and gas up your vehicle(s). BUT do NOT wait til the last minute!!! Stores will run out of the main items (batteries, water and such).
Experience is, the weather people have to stay on top of things due to ratings AND if they didn't people would complain and say "NO ONE told us!" if the improbable happens.

Just like up north. As soon as you hear the "S(now) word" on TV you can't buy a bottle of milk or a loaf of bread or a frozen pizza. After experiencing Sandy up north and IRMA right after we moved in here not much more we can do. Still have all the water left that we bought for IRMA in the garage. IRMA (direct hit over TV as a CAT 1) really wasn't so terrible. Fortunately we weren't on the north end of TV were power is a little more exposed and more likely to go out. Up north during Sandy the infrastructure being so old where we lived caused more problem then Irma. We never even lost cable here we had no power up there for 10 days because a neighbors tree took out the power line. If they say it will be CAT2 or 3 then I might think differently but that isn't likely here since we are inland. The east coast of FL is another story. I'm more concerned over neighbors leaving flower pots and other small stuff outside. Wife and I went house to house around us asking our neighbors to take in their 20lb lawn projectiles. Didn't want to find a neighbor's planter in our bedroom.

Irma was not a direct hit on The Villages. It was actually west of us (30 or 40 miles perhaps).

The media hype is typically much worse than the actual storm, especially where we are located in Central Florida, away from the Coasts. We lived right on Tampa Bay for 25 years and only had water come over the sea wall a couple of times, but never close to the house. Here in TV, we will have a full tank of gas and we always have water on hand. This storm isn't even projected to be a hurricane, only a tropical storm. That said, if it does become a Cat 1 or Cat 2 hurricane, we are in for some heavy wind and rain. In that case, be sure to bring in anything that could be blown around including lawn furniture and potted plants. Put your car and golf cart in the garage.

Remember the graphics used for projections are some meteorologists interpretation/best guess of what COULD BE......
When these events are unraveling it would be so much better absent the drama that too often gets injected into the presentation......the phony reporting in the beating down rain adds no value what so ever.

I watched for your posts for a few days prior and then into the early morning hours until it did pass to the West of us, by then the eye was distorted.

Fill all the gas tanks you have available, make sure your generator is working if you have one, remove loose items from outdoors and place them in your garage or house, fill a bathtub with water, buy some bottled water, buy ice if you have room to store it in a freezer, get CASH from an ATM or bank before the storm hits, fill any propane tanks, make sure you have a flashlight or candles, charge your phones and other devices, have a charging cable available in your car for your electronic devices.

We're always all set here in TV - away from the coasts, in a sturdy newer block house, stocked with necessities (hope...), comfy bathroom in the middle/away from windows etc, and ready for the worst.
The ONLY things we are terrified of is losing power and NOT being able to watch all the TV news shows with those live stupid reporter stand ups yapping in gusty winds with a palm leaf rustling and a sign rattling during the storms.

August 16, 1977 the day Elvis died, we moved from Navy Pensacola into a new radar approach control at Pensacola Regional Airport. In 1979 many of us rode out Hurricane Frederic at the facility, no damage to the building, we did register winds of 95 mph. Here's an outside view of the building, the radar room is on the second floor right side.

In 2004 Hurricane Ivan came ashore in Pensacola with winds of 130 mph, and this is what happened to the same radar facility.

Our three will take down anything not firmly attached, in our case we have some solar lights stuck in the ground and some potted plants. We will take inside any outside furniture, anything can become a projectile. We have food and water for several days and we will fill bathtubs so that we can flush the toilets if necessary... and our gas is topped off.
I hope and pray that we will be as fortunate as we were with Irma. Nothing serious damaged. It was our first hurricane here.
Hoping all can do what needs to be done to get ready and we all will be counting the same amount of noses come next Wednesday.

On 4 pm broadcast Channel 2 has it as a category 3 after it crosses all that open water before coming ashore. If it crosses the state, they showed it going over Orlando. The right side is the worse and we would be on the right side. However, Hurricane Irma went north parallel to I-75 and we were on the right side and my Directv didn't even go out. I stayed up until 4:30 until the eye had passed us, no damage here.

The real test of one's metal will come if there ever is a call for an evacuation.
The routes out....I-75 and I-95 and most roads to them will be nothing more than disorganized parking lots.
Riding one out in a cement block built home may be the safer option than being stuck in a car for hours and maybe for the storm.
Let's hope we never have to make that choice.

Having grown up near the NC coast I've been through a number of hurricanes.
The worst part for me is always the boredom and the monotony of constant rain.
So I'm topping off my Kindle ereader and all my electronic devices. I've also got an emergency charger in case the power goes out.
And I've got a full set of rain gear from when I used to ride Harleys so I can walk to Sumter Landing. One of the great things about TV is no overhead power lines to avoid stepping on.
I can't say the same for all the snakes that will be driven out from any local flooding.

If Dorian keeps on the predicted track and Central Florida will get a direct hit of a Cat3 hurricane I'm gonna stay home and hunker down. But if by chance it moves up to a Cat4, I'm thinking leaving will be better. I owned in TV when Irma hit but I was up north selling my townhouse so I've never experienced going through this. I keep reading about that but anyone know when or where that has actually happened in a "modern" infrastructure area?
My father's area took a pretty direct hit in Ft Lauderdale during IRMA and had no water (drinking or flushing) problems but there was lots of other damage.
I always hear of loss of electricity but never loss of water pressure despite all the "fill the tub" warnings. Rural areas maybe? Yes, we did fill our tub for Ms. IRMA because everyone said we should. Maybe it's like you need a supply of bread and milk (and tuna fish??) even if you never eat bread and milk because "they say you should. :)
Heaven forbid if we can't flush! :D

IF the storm were to stay in the path that is currently forecast, then the center would pass to the south of Orlando. IF that holds true, I would expect some wind and a lot of rain here. Then again, this will be my first hurricane, and I may very well not know what I am talking about. I have been a hurricane watcher for many years, and the one thing I do know is that it is way too early to be sure of where this thing will hit, and what areas it will affect.

My family spent many summers at Ocracoke NC (the pirate Black Beard’s refuge). Every late summer hurricanes hit and the first few times my family evacuated 100 miles away; 2 young children, 2 dogs, 1 cat. Then we noticed that the same buildings seem always to be ok year after year. When tourist left the news people took their place, one person took our room and parking place. After that my husband said we are not leaving in the future anymore. We never ended up facing a severe hurricane though. Some people who lived directly on the coast never left for any hurricane. They stayed out of the water, boarded up their windows and doors and seemed to do alright.
My uncle lived as a frog in TV since 1992 just south of Spanish Springs and also never left TV for hurricanes till he passed away 5 years ago.

There could be as much as 24 inches of rain in the interior counties, that is the worst case scenario according to the Weather Channel. You can hide from wind but water is more dangerous.
We need to see if we can get into our attics, and have something to corral our pets and get out our life jackets too. I wonder if Life jackets are sold out.

It sounds like you’re a bit nervous about the hurricane. If you receive the Daily Sun, there is an article on the front page that outlines the ways The Villages works to mitigate excess water. Irma was our first hurricane here, and I read everything I could about getting prepared. Before Irma went through, I read about northbound traffic being just packed with cars, and decided I’d rather ride it out in my home than in my car.
I was absolutely amazed at how much water The Villages was able to successfully manage. There were only a few roads that were impassable. There was a lot of tree debris in the streets, which they were able to get cleared out within a reasonable amount of time, with a few exceptions.
There isn’t much that can be done about wind damage to trees. Ensure all your outside stuff that can be blown about is brought in or secured. Take the precautions mentioned in this thread. Either hunker down or go north. If you’re going north, do it NOW. Don’t wait until Saturday.

If anyone is driving out of the way of Dorian and wouldn't mind a passenger, send me a message! My vision isn't good enough for freeway driving or I'd just go.
I'm not so worried about physical danger, but being without power for 3 days with Irma was not something I'd choose to do again if I have a choice.
Thanks.

Latest forecast I saw was for it to hit Florida as a Cat 4 on Monday around Vero Beach. It won’t reach Orlando until Tuesday and by then it will be a Cat 1. Then, it is supposed to go north along the 75/Turnpike corridor still as a Cat 1. This is projected to be a very slow moving hurricane which certainly is not good for anybody in its path. It could dump huge amounts of rain along with 80 mph winds for many hours here in TV if this holds true. I have been through a couple like this up in NC and they cause a lot of damage and flooding when they move this slow. All of this could change tomorrow or over the weekend, stay vigilant and be prepared.

More About What Qualifies as a Flood
As mentioned earlier, regular homeowners insurance doesn’t cover floods. So when is damage considered to be caused by a flood?
Water has to cover at least 2 acres of land that’s normally dry, or has to have damaged two or more properties (one being your home).
Also, the water has to come from:
Overflowing inland or tidal waters
Unusual, rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source
Mudflow (that’s mud carried by a flow of water, creating a river of mud)
You’re also covered when shorefront land collapses or sinks due to waters above “anticipated cyclical levels.”
Water and seepage that comes from sewer or drain backups, or a sump pump that overflows is not considered a flood.

Fox 35 this morning shows it making landfall around W. Palm Beach as a Cat 4 on Monday. It doesn't turn north until it's inland and reaches Orlando and The Villages Wednesday Afternoon as a Cat 1. It will turn northeast after passing and exit around Jacksonville next Friday, which is about when the rain will stop.

Sometimes I think we should rename ‘Sumter’ to ‘Sumpter’. Trying to remember there is no “p” just doesn’t come naturally for a lot of us. I’ll have to research the background of the name.
Happy to hear that the hurricane will be downgraded as my home (2007) is built to withstand sustained winds to about 116 mph. In the historic region, my parents owned a manufactured home as a seasonal, and in 15 years they replaced the roof once because a tree fell on it.

Remember the penny trick--freeze a cup filled with water , after the water turns to ice, place a penny on top of the ice--if we must leave or there is a prolonged power outage--if the penny is on the bottom of the cup--throw out everything that required refrigeration or freezing

Our roof in the historic region is new (in the last 5 years) but there's a super-tall tree right behind the house on our property. The branches overhang the roof, it's very close to the house. I worry about branches damaging the roof or knocking out windows in the winds, but not so much the tree falling on the house.
I'm very glad that I'm in the north right now. I'd hate to be down there with no air conditioning, no power, and flooding at the bottom of the hill (which is the way out of our section).
I think if I was down there I'd probably just drive north for a couple of hours on Sunday, and hole up in a hotel til I knew it was safe to return.
As it stands, I doubt the winds will be bad enough to blow roofs off buildings in the Villages. But they might be bad enough to cause damage from branches and lawn chairs and other things that aren't secured.

I keep being amazed at the great people who live in TV, it’s like we got the best of the best.
In my case Empty Nest looks after the home when I’m not there and they have already emailed me saying they have secured items around the property and will be checking in after the storm. And Village Insurance has sent me 2 mails about how they can help if there are any damages from the storm.
There is not another place I’ve been where people are so considerate.

The list I posted (and much more) below that comment is what they will NOT pay for (taken from an insurance website) because it isn't considered a covered flood loss. That I can say from actual experience and a $25K loss back in the mid 90's. One must read their NFIP carefully. The fact your agent said you don't need it leads me to believe you don't.
EDIT: And I repeat: If it makes you feel safer it is well worth having it.

Yep, the east coast of Florida...is still not out of the woods.
In a sad irony, my buddy in Myrtle Beach texted me a couple of days ago to come visit him, play some golf...and get out of the way of Dorian.
I have since sent him the same invitation.

At this point, they are still counting on the storm being influenced by a high pressure area to the north. If that changes, all bets are off. If memory serves me, Andrew was forecast to make a similar turn to the north, and did not. South Florida got pummeled. Too early to say we're out of the woods.

WESH 4 news just said that as thing stand now (based on the 5PM NWS update) Sumter county should get ~1-2 inches of rain and wind gusts around 20.
To put that in perspective, yesterday (Friday) our PWS read ~1.5" inches of rain in a 3 hr period. I checked a couple other local PWS's and they also had 1.25 to 1.6 yesterday. Now I wonder how many of the people they showed on TV lined up at Orlando Costco will be returning their generators.

Storms make me wonder about human nature. If people are concerned enough to run out and stock up on water and batteries, etc. a few days before a storm, why not just keep those things on hand? Buy emergency supplies or a generator when people aren't rampaging in the stores! It's not as if hurricane season is a surprise. Jeepers.
Keeping one's vehicle at least half full of gas isn't that burdensome, either.

Even though the Walmart on Wedgewood was showing online as being open, their grocery pickup service has been unavailable since the weekend and all upcoming days are still grayed out. Probably all such decisions are made by corporate headquarters and local store managers don't get a say, but it seems silly.
