With "high ground" being at most 10'-15' above normal sea level for the majority of the islands and 20' surges possible, plus the fact that there are projections that Dorian could stall for up to two days there (with 125+mph winds)...I can't even fathom the fear and stress those residents are going through right now. :ohdear:
My heart goes out to all of those on the islands (particularly the northwest Bahamas) and I have a really bad feeling...that this will be a huge catastrophic tragedy for them.
I really, really, hope... my gut is completely wrong.
I also hope that we do the right thing...and are quick to get there and help. :(

Yes, poor folks that are in that (apparent) Dorian direct-hit. No place to hide. Such a beautiful area of the Carrib... hope it weathers the storm with no loss of life...

Mother Nature can be quite frightening.

I can't see how there won't be bad news. It is an awful storm.

Sending positive energy to the people effected. Will have to see what else can be done later.

With current conditions, wind speed of 185 mph, moving at 7 mph, this is going to be extremely damaging for the northern Bahamas.

Reported gusts over 200 mph with sustained winds over 185 mph. Unfortunately there may not be much of anything still standing after Dorian is done in the northern Bahamas. Add in the storm surges, the potential for loss of life is huge. We can only hope that the loss of life is as minimal as possible and for those so inclined. to keep them in thoughts and prayers.

Doesn't sound like you have ever been there, highest point in Abaco Island is 134 feet above sea level and a good percentage of the island is over 25 feet. Also the 3rd largest barrier reef in the world is off shore which will help mitigate surge. That said, wouldn't want to be there right now.

Live webcam Marsh Harbor Abaco Island Bahamas. They must build strong homes there as I've been watching for an hour and home in video still standing in 168 mph winds

Agree, that house on the cam must be bolted down and made of concrete and steel.
Nice to see what we in TV have missed so far. But so hard for them.
Looking at the small red car at the bottom on the right side, it has not moved and it should have if the winds are 168 mph as stated. Hm?

I watched the livestream. Really scary!

Also, the trees indicate one direction for the wind but the debris is going in the opposite direction....

Point taken, I should have been more specific.
The reports I was watching, obviously were referring to Abaco's largest community Marsh Harbor...which is only 13 feet above sea level.

Abaco’s largest community is Marsh Harbor. The town of 6,000 people sits 13 feet above sea level, making them vulnerable to a surge of the magnitude currently forecast.
As for its barrier reef providing even a modicum of "relief" from a storm surge such as this, would love to see your citation(s)...as I've yet to hear that it makes any difference ifor Marsh Harbor.

While I still can't find anything that says the reef off of Abaco is helping with Dorian's storm surge...I (as always) appreciate a legitimate link.
Since the link says in some situations reef's "can" help in a storm surge...here's hoping that applies in this case.

The power for the camera hasn’t gone out either.
Update: now the power is gone.
“Entire islands may be nearly submerged in the Bahamas
Low-lying islands in the Bahamas are at highest risk as Hurricane Dorian sweeps through the island chain.”
‘“Where we are right now, the highest point on this island is only about 30 feet high, the highest point of land -- and so when you hear about a storm surge of 20 feet, that means in the hours and days ahead, much of this island where I am standing will be underwater," said CNN correspondent Patrick Oppmann on Sunday in Freeport, Grand Bahama.’ Google
