Why do we need a "greater" at the Library? There is someone next to the Bathroom door at the Belvedere Library, she said they have an hour standing there and then someone else comes for an hour; I said are you guarding the bathroom? she said "I'm a greater" I don't know who they are guarding the bathroom from at public facility!!

I don't think they are there to greet customers. I believe they are there to create an illusion of security, to discourage people from stealing books and DVDs. There are many people who walk out with 10 or more books and/or DVDs that they have not checked out and will never return. I have seen it happen at both of the Sumter County libraries, but especially at the one on Powell Road. The libraries have no security system to prevent people from just walking out with the materials. In the past, library materials had a security device and scanner at the door, but not anymore.

So no one "books it" out the door.

Yes, because that is the way the library system operates today. The librarians won't do anything about it. What would you have done? It's just another example of the Government wasting taxpayer money. If it were a business, they would go out of business.

what bothers me is finding dog poop in front of the Library. Don't people know they are supposed to pick it up?

Libraries usually have things in the books which will set off an alarm when they are taken out of the building without these objects being cleared by the checking out process.

Maybe some libraries do, but the Sumter County libraries don't have any security system in place. There are no alarms. In fact, the DVDs, which are the most valuable materials, don't even have locking cases, so you can just remove the discs and put them in your pocket.

OK. I usually use the Lake County Library System which I am pretty sure has security in place.

Yes, Lake County, but not Sumter County. And, Lake County doesn't have "greeters".

It really stinks that someone would steal from a public library when books/CD's are free to take home and use. Just bring it back so another person can enjoy it. :read:
