I lost one of my mailbox keys and would like to know how to go about getting a another key.
Can I go to a hardware store and get a duplicate key made?

I don't believe the hardware store can legally duplicate it but there are machines in Home Depot & Lowes where you can "do it yourself." Not sure it can be done there but you can try. If it is like a REGULAR post office box (in a physical PO building) they have to replace the lock and both keys because if you lost it someone could theoretically find it and steal your mail if they can figure out what box it belongs to. In NJ it was $75 to change PO BOX lock and 2 new keys.

A lost key here will cost you $50.00 and some effort. If you are one key short of the original issue, there will be a delay at the closing of a sale of your home. You go to the POST OFFICE in Lady Lake and pay the fee. You will be given a key that will fit the NEW lock. Then, they send a locksmith to your PO Box to install the NEW lock and leave your NEW keys in the box. (Please don't ask how I know about this.) At the time it is somewhat irritating, but in retrospect, it is a logical and safe system that will encourage you to be more careful with the new keys. I highly doubt you can make your own PO Box key at any hardware store. Good Luck.

Is it possible to get a third key? I would like a mailbox key for each of our vehicles.

If you get the mailbox key replaced you will get three keys. Originally, the Villages kept the third key so you could have them check your mailbox if you were gone. They quit doing that some years ago, but that is why many homes only have two.

We own three homes in the Villages. We have all three keys for two of those homes.

Also, the blanks for the keys are unique, so the DIY key machines will not work. These keys are actually stamped DO NOT DUPLICATE. The key has a serial number, if you go to the lady Lake post office you maybe lucky and the key was turned in, take one of your other keys with you.

Go to the post office and they will tell you what to do. I was told to go to the post office on 441, fill out the paperwork and pay the fee. The new key appeared in our mailbox in a couple of days.

:agree:
Been there, done that. The post office gives you one of the keys, so you use your old key until it doesn’t work (account new tumbler installed), then toss the old key. So you should carry both keys with you until the job is done.

Same happened to us- you can not replace key. You will need to have lock replaced by the postmaster. The cost to replace is $35.00. It takes about a week and you will receive 3 new keys.

The same thing happened to me and I asked our ‘mail guy’ how to get a replacement and he told me they have to do it and it would cost $30!

Blank mailbox keys are 80 cents and up on eBay. So much for not being able to get one.

I don't know, just speculating.. But I would not recommend changing a lock on your mail box as it is not YOUR mail box. It is property of the USPS. I doubt it is ok to change the lock on someone else's property especially that of a government agency. But I'm just speculating...

EDIT: Never mind, they don't allow cell phones in the big house.

I am a Federal employee and with 4 decades in I can assure you that no one is going to harass you on a mailbox key. We have more pressing matters to attend to. In my area I can't even get a US Attorney to touch case with less than a quarter million in recoverable assets

You have to request a new key if you're using a mailbox at a U.S. Post Office.
If you lost your key for a Villages mailbox, you can get a replacement made at Ace hardware store.
I recently had one made for my sister.

You are wrong and ACE was wrong.

Those boxes are no different than the ones at the USPS physical locations and the keys are clearly marked USPS DO NOT DUPLICATE. It's more likely ACE, as a business, could have a problem for doing it than any individual bringing them in.

Not that anyone would ever be punished for it, it's just a point of information.
