View Full Version : Another Costco Rumor

On a Village social neighborhood site it is said that Costco has purchased property in Clermont, Florida for a new store. Clermont is just 25 miles south of Leesburg via U.S. 27/Florida Turnpike and would easily be accessible to Village residents. Perhaps dreams of a Costco close by for Village shoppers just might come true. Or maybe this is just another false rumor. What say you? :faint:

My wife read online that Costco is officially coming to Clermont. If so, that would be closer than going to Altamonte Springs, Orlando or Tampa to get our Costco fix. I still wish they'd come to The Villages but apparently they think of us as A) a seasonal population (although the full-time resident count is growing by leaps and bounds) and B) cheap. Well, B) may be true. I've heard that Sams Club doesn't do as well as at other locations as Villages only buy small ticket items (like groceries and gas) there rather than big-ticket items (like furniture and appliances).

I suppose every little bit helps, but unfortunately, that's only +-15 minutes closer than to the Wesley Chapel or Altamonte Springs locations from my house.

Oh well, at least they're getting closer! :D

Clermont won’t make any difference for us as a few minutes of driving more would get us to 3 other Costcos. Maybe for future Villager in the south section when it is developed it might make a difference.

Only 34 min from Linden, about the same as Spanish Springs :coolsmiley:

Depending on the location in T.V. one lives...that might be closer. We're in the vicinity between Mallory CC and Hemingway CC, so it's about 30 minutes to Clermont for us, if it's on the end of town of Culver's.

I don't think it is "official". Yesterday, I did an online chat with Costco and asked specifically about the Clermont store. The chat lady said that they don't announce any information about future stores until they break ground.

Rumors abound in T.V.---generally heard either at the pool or from an agent (real estate or a store). Unless we see the announcement in the paper I'd take it with a grain of salt.

It would depend where in Clermont , it's a large area. Two weeks ago the rumor was north half way between TV and Ocala.

If you all want a Costco....go onto their FB page & post that you want them here & give them the stats of all the families here FT. I have been e mailing them for 5 of my eight years here. I have sent them lot locations etc. on their corporate website too.

Might be during peak season but if Costco ever opened within 20 miles it would hurt them dearly. They cannot compare with Costco in any department or especially with their minimum wage employees. I think of Sam's as just another Walmart.

People have been contacting Costco and Trader Joe's since I move here 7.5 years ago. Nothing has happened.

We currently do not fit the Costco demographic or marketing footprint. They will not open here since too seasonal and not enough larger families with higher incomes. Look at where their stores are located.

There may be one at the new shopping area across from Pinellas Plaza, however, COSTCO already assassinated a leaker! So wait and see!

I certainly hope Costco will come to Clermont. I will drop my Sam's Club membership in a heartbeat. The local Sam's Club is the worst one I have ever visited, and getting worse. Costco is such a better choice.

We travel to Gainesville once a month. At least we can stop at TJs. A Costco would be nice in that area. Have not been to a BJs. We have couple up north, but we use Sams, Costco, TJs, and the exchange.

I spoke to a manager at a Costco and was told the area they move into has to have a $100,00.00 average income for starters. Won’t bore you with the rest.

I have spoken to an individual at Costco's corporate office and they recently told me they had no plans to locate anywhere in our general area. From what was discussed, "we" don't have a sufficient number of "family" units that bulk purchase. GK - Pine Ridge

I have been doing business with Costco Corporate since the mid 80's. As a result I know or have access to many of Costco's Executive staff. I contacted the SR. VP/General Manager for Costco's SE Region which includes the State of Florida via email. I specifically asked him if Costco has any plans to open a location somewere in the vacinity of Leesburg, The Villages or Ocala. I have cut & pasted the reply I received this morning. It reads:

"Good Morning
We are still In the early stages of looking for the right property and one that makes sense knowing the size (of the market) and competitive environment. Our real estate group is running into issues with finding something that is affordable by our standards. Thanks for checking back.

I can tell you that Costco will not announce any new location until the site is selected and negotiations completed and all permits granted. Information on a new store could leak from locals but Costco will not announce because many "deals" fall apart for various reasons.

At this point in time my only takeaway from the SR VP's response is that they are indeed looking. Keep your fingers crossed.
