We have been without a refrigerator since November 29, when it stopped working. We have been eating 2 meals a day out. We lost $400 worth of food. We have had an extended warranty on our refrigerator so the cost of the repair has not been a problem. However, everytime they diagnosed the problem and had to order parts, Lowes had to give their approval which slowed the entire process down. I am not going to get into the diagnosis except to say, if you buy an appliance these days, buy an extended warranty since the appliances are mostly junk. It's 2020 and you would think 'we' could produce an appliance that would last a while. Not so.
So after 7 weeks of farting around with repairs the repairman said, "It's not possible to repair this thing. I am going to recommend that they pay you for a new refrigerator". They (the extended warranty people) did that the same day. So off to Lowes to buy a refrigerator. No luck. They had a big sale on Black Friday, which depleted their warehouse supply, it would have been 6 weeks before we got a delivery. So we ran down the road to Home Depot. The salesman is nice, we find a fridge, give the man our credit card, schedule a day for delivery (Wednesday) and leave. We get a phone call at 7:30 am on Wednesday from the delivery company. "Our trucks our running late so we can't deliver until Thursday between 3:30 and 7:30 pm." In my just-got-out-of-bed-state, I can't make sense of how at 7:30 in the morning, the trucks are running late but I ignored it and said OK. I had an 11:15 am appointment and my husband was here and since the delivery time was 3:30 or after, I didn't worry about it. I arrived home at 11:55 with plenty of time to spare only to walk in and learn that the delivery people were here and left and we had no refrigerator. My husband was on the phone and was being very loud. He gives me the phone and I asked what happened. The delivery boss says, "We've been there 2 days in a row and no one has been home." "What!?" says I, "that's not true. Someone was here both days and we weren't supposed to get delivery yesterday. It was supposed to be today between 3:30 and 7:30 pm." "No Ma'm", the boss says, " the delivery time was 11am to 3:30pm". We talked, I used language unbecoming to a lady, I cried a little and they wouldn't come back. We talked to people at Lady Lake Home Depot, Home Depot headquarters, and we got nothing except delivery, which had been suggested for Saturday was now suggested for next Wednesday. Nothing left to do but cancel the order and go elsewhere. In summary, Home Depot tells you one thing and does another, too many people are involved in handling your purchase or order, and communication is sorely lacking. Thanks for letting me vent but I also hope that you will remember this if you make a purchase that might need delivery or customer service from Home Depot somewhere down the road. We had a similar situation in the purchase and installation of a door a couple of years ago. That was settled amicably but who needs the stress!

I understand that Home Depot relies on the manufacturer to deliver their appliances, so different brands will come from different places. But, Lowes has their own trucks and their own employees to deliver their appliances. So, they have total control over the delivery. Also, Lowes will allow 30 day returns for almost any reason, but Home Depot will not. It is better to buy appliances from Lowes.

We never buy extended warranties on anything, the seller of the warranty is betting the item won't need repair, while you're betting its going to fail
Get the simplest appliance , that easy to repair or if necessary won't break the bank to replace--we plan on junking washer/dryer every 8 years, the same goes for the hot water heater--a/c--10 years-- replace before they fail

Both Lowe's & HD use independent contractors for deliveries. There is a whole industry out there, "Last Mile".
Usually Lowe's and HD require the manufacturers to line up the IC's. IC's can have the store's logo's on their units. Very difficult job. $75/stop.
Remember the Florida lady killed by the IC. Be careful. 99% are okay.

I agree with not buying extended warranties. You are stuck with whoever the warranty company sends to your house and their schedule. Often, the repair person will come from out of town because the high quality repair companies won't do business with the warranty company. Do you want to wait 2 to 5 days to get an air conditioner repaired when there are at least 6 or so companies in The Villages who will come to your house the same day? According to Clark Howard, the consumer expert, extended warranty companies only pay out about 8 percent of the money they collect in premiums to repair appliances.

Lowes must have changed their policy. My washer and dryer were delivered to my house a few years ago by a guy who was a Lowes employee and driving a Lowes truck.

Check your credit card benefits. With Citi we get 2% cash back and they double the lenght of warranties on anyting you buy except autos and one other item which I can't remember. That is a super benefit.

Can you be more specific? The Citi credit card department told me that they do not offer a credit card that extends warranties on anything.
FYI, here is an update:
"Due to Citi recently cutting benefits across its entire range of rewards cards, extended warranty cover is no longer offered on the Citi® Double Cash Card."

My neighbor and myself have both used Best Buy. In April 2018 I bought a new LG top load stainless washer & dryer. They matched the 10% veteran discount of Lowes, were $80 cheaper than Home Depot, and went lower and gave us a $100 store credit card. Had them delivered and they arrived on time.
Lowes delivers from the store you purchase from, so the inventory at individual stores is going to be much less than a central wareshouse in the Orlando area, which is what Best Buy uses.
In July of 2018 we bought a 75" Samsung 4K TV and in October 2018 we bought an LG stainless refrigerator, stove, micro-wave hood and dishwasher. All delivered on time and set up by the Best Buy delivery crew.
Before I selected the make, models and Best Buy, I opened a browser window for Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy and Amazon and read reviews from all the stores for a day on these items, looking for the brands and models with the fewest complaints. Then compared prices and Best Buy came out ahead and had the models I wanted in stock. For example on the washer I learned the front loaders had problems with leaks and mold on the door gasket. So then I read top loaders and even though LG front loaders had complaints, their top load washers had the best reviews and the less complaints, and went from there with the dryer and so on until I had make all my selections.

We purchased a new fridge last year after last one was not repairable. After reading about what ALL brands had for reliability, we bought our first extended warranty. There was not one brand that did not have many problems in first five years, both ice maker and refrigerator. I was told the new life expected for refrigerators was 3-5 years??

Another vote for Best Buy. Up North 18 months ago I bought a Samsung kitchen suite which took 9 attempts to get delivered due to Samsung's contract service (GE deliveries). While the store was most helpful, they were not even allowed to communicate with the delivery service, thay had to go through GE Deliveries. Finally got it right, and the delivery service compensated my $150. for my "inconvenience".
In Jan 2019 we bought an "open box special" high-end LG refrigerator from Best Buy. It was delivered and didn't work properly (fortunately we still had our old and still working refrig). I personally went to BB and had conversation with the very helpful manager whose resolution to my issue was to replace the open box unit with a NEW unit. Took about a week total. So for my money BB is the place.

A different take about Home Depot:
We've been a Home Depot customer for over 20 years and have purchased many, many items from them on a furnish, deliver and install basis. We've never experienced anything like you are describing. We've always been more than pleased with customer service and communications with HD and their subcontractors and suppliers.

Could I ask what brand of appliance that was not repairable? I hope things work out for you.
It was Whirlpool, it was two years old and had the first major repair at 13 months. Before that it was a Samsung, 3 years old. We were told by multiple sales people at different stores that appliances, especially refrigerators, aren't like they used to be. Even the repairmen who came here told us the same thing. They said IF you get 3 years out of a refrigerator, you are lucky, so buy an extended warranty. We have never purchased an extended warranty until we bought the Whirlpool. The cost of repairing the Samsung was terrible.
I want to clarify that the repairman said it was not repairable because Lowes and the extended warranty company were not willing to put more money into it. They had replaced the compressor and a fan. When he came back it was the compressor again.
Also, the delivery people are independent contractors, not employees of Lowes or Home Depot.

We have had decent experiences with them except for the door that I mentioned. Now my husband reminds me of the blinds issue. We bought blinds. We had a large window that they specified that it be 3 separate sets of blinds with one continuous rail that they were attached to. Everytime they carried it to the house, they carried it on their shoulder and the weight of the blinds bent the rail. Home Depot made it right but they had to do it three times because no one warned the guy who delivered not to carry it on his shoulder.

Well, Clark Howard needs to update and rethink his position. The extended warranty pays up to $400 for spoiled food from the fridge, they will pay for a refrigerator rental but we have no place to put it, the rental company won't move the old one, and my husband is handicapped and can't move anything. There is not a perfect answer, only one a bit better than the other.

I asked at Lowes about Kitchenaid. The salesman said, "When I told you that refrigerators are junk now, I meant ALL of them". You bought yours 15 years ago when they were probably still being made in the US. We had a refrigerator in Ohio before we left that was 30 years old. The new owners said that the only reason they got a new one was that ours was too small. As far as I know, that refrigerator is till working in their basement. Our neighbor had an old refrigerator with the compressor on top that they bought when they got married and they had been married 60 years. It was working, beer and pop were icy cold.

Designed obsolescence. My brother wanted to study designing automobiles in the 80’s (as an engineer). When he learned that cars were designed to fall apart, little by little, the least dangerous parts failing first, he became disillusioned. The reason the new machinery is designed to fail is so that you will replace it. How else will the company keep making money?

Here is another vote for Best Buy. Home Depot was always my go to place until I moved down here to receive the worst service ever. I bought a Frig from Lowes and was told by the salesmen to get the extended warranty because nothing is built to last these days. When they delivered the frig it was damaged but they left it until a new one came in. Since then I had two heating units go in the freezer door that keeps condensation away. However, the warranty covered new doors and the plumbers visits.

I appreciate your comments. But, extended warranty companies exist for one reason only, to make money. Basically, they are call centers. And, the people who sell the warranties are only interested in one thing, to make a sales commission. These companies are not in business to help people. Check out the complaints on Google and BBB.com.

I agree but I assume the thinking is that the company can't be profitable if the unit lasts 20 years. We had a Samsung 3 years that needed 3 service calls at $300 each. The last time I refused to put another $300 into it. I figured it like this: You buy it for over $2000 and then it costs $300 per year to operate. We will all be back to the wooden ice box soon with the man delivering big blocks of ice daily.

We got 30% of the money back from the purchase of the warranty, in addition to what we paid for the refrigerator, tax, and the cost of the food we lost (twice). They put a new compressor in it and it worked less than a week but we had gotten some groceries. So 60% of the cost of the warranty is what it cost us to use this Whirlpool refrigerator for 26 months. I can't imagine that they made much on the sale of that warranty. We were never proponents of extended warranties until we had the Samsung experience of 3 big ticket repairs in 3 years.

This post relates only to refrigerators. We inherited a Kenmore frig when buying our home, and based on its label plate, it died after less than 3 years of service. To make a long story short, initially the LG compressor failed, and in successive days after a repair, the coils died, then the fan and finally the ice maker. I spoke with the repairman after knowing we had to buy a new unit. I asked what manufacturers we should avoid. He said it was easier to tell you which ones to purchase from. He said to focus on GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and Kitchenaide. They use the most reliable parts. He did say stay away from LG and Samsung. They contribute to most of the service calls he makes for refrigerators.

I've knottiest that many people disregard their stuff for new, our Village home is 16 years old, we still have the original washer/dryer, hot water tank, and air conditioner/heating sys. With the help of u-tube I have worked on the washer/dryer a couple times. The hot water tank started to leek a couple years ago, found out it was the plastic drain valve, replace it with a brass one. up-graded to a new Frig. after a couple years the ice maker went on the frits again with the help of u-tube I replaced the control valve two years later still working fine. The moral of this story is with a little investigation you can extend the life of your stuff and save some money.

Just google appliance longevity and you will quickly put to bed the notion refrigerators only last 1-3 years!!!
That is nothing but a salesperson's axe to grind.
No doubt they are not made like they used to be. Then what is.....and that does not automatically imply bad!!
Many of us still have a 15-20 year old refrigerator cranking in the garage.
New life expectancy is in the 7-10 year range....most will do better.
Check Consumer Report among others to get the real story.

Home Depot 3rd party delivery company goofed up on our delivery of Samsung Front Loader Wash & Dryer with pedestals. The first day they didn't show up. No big deal. They did show up late in the day the next day. They sorta did the delivery azz ackwards. They removed the old washer & dryer and then unboxed the new units inside the truck. After making sure the boxes were never opened before I went in the house to get them both a drink and to get their tip.
They were inside already with the new equipment by the time I got to the laundry room. Small problem, the stuff they delivered was white and we ordered silver. They asked if we would take the white ones. Nope. Now reverse the process. Back on the truck with the new and hook up the old units. Reported the situation to the store manager and the delivery company on the phone.
The next day on the first delivery our new correct color stuff was delivered and thing went perfectly. Later in the day I went to Home Depot and spoke to the Store Manager. I said I wanted to be compensated for our time. I said I don't care if it's $50 or a $1000. I just want to feel like they cared about what happened to us. 15 minutes later he came back and asked if a $350 adjustment would do the trick. I graciously accepted and all has been fine ever since.
I hardly ever buy the extended warranty but did so as they were having a special and it would have be dopey not to purchase both policies. So far so good. Home Depot is good by me.
Lowes on 441 has one Company truck left for emergency home deliveries. They farmed out all the other work when they found out how hard and expensive it is to have a fleet of drivers and trucks. Smart Business Move.

Nucky!
The negotiating style you described in paragraph 3 above is a thing of beauty.
If you ever decided to un-retire, you could quickly build a little business in TV — built out of nothing more than just you doing your thing by taking care of such problems for those who do not have skills such as yours. You did not fade away, defeated, nor did you yell and scream, or try to intimidate. (They are used to that.)
You stood up for the consumer’s right to fairness in a transaction while treating the manager in a respectful manner.
I recognize the gift you have of being able to use compromise to get what is fair. Throughout my working years, I often was involved in contract negotiations. I sure would have wanted you to be on my side of that bargaining table.
:bigbow: to you.
Sincerely,
Norma Rae Boomer

Lowes and Home Depot are now using 3rd party delivery.
Ordered a fridge on black Friday, came in 3 weeks later.
The delivery window was set for 8am to 8pm.
XPO logistics (delivery company) called at 7:30pm said "the truck broke down" will have to re-schedule.
Re-scheduled,same window, no show, no call.
3rd re-schedule, same 8-8 window, called said same excuse, "truck broke down"
Went to Lowes, canceled the order, Lowes called XPO.
Got a call from XPO at 9:30 pm said we can be there in an hour and a half. (they deliver from Orlando)
Told them to forget it. Told Lowes we will never buy from them again.
Lowes was very apologetic and said it was a "corporate" decision to go with XPO, and are getting many customer complaints.
Next day went to a mom and pop shop in Ocala, found the same fridge, same price.
We're done buying from the big box stores.
(Best Buy also uses XPO for delivery)

My refrigerator that was put in when the house was built is 17 years old now and still going strong. I hope it outlives me!

Addendum:
Nucky!
I forgot to include this part when I wrote about you in Post #35:
In addition to recognizing your negotiating skills, I also want to say thank you for being aware of how it is for those who must interact with a range of personality types when trying to do their jobs — from a powerless position.
When you said you gave those delivery guys a drink of water and a tip, I thought — of course — that is the decent thing to do and Nucky knows it.
I have lately noticed how somewhat surprised those in service jobs seem to be when treated well. I once had a mover tell me that I would not believe how many people do not offer them even a drink of water as they work their tails off all day. Actually, that did not surprise me at all.
And don’t get me started on how some people treat servers. (I think everybody should be a server at some point in their lives.)
But, I digress.
Anyway, Nucky, kudos to you for knowing how to treat others.

PS: Back on topic: We have bought two French door refrigerators, one at home and one in the Florida house. One an Electrolux and one an LG. Both had ice-maker problems, repeatedly. The Electrolux was eventually replaced. The LG was finally fixed by a local guy who knew how to rig the part to actually work.
Anybody who has an older appliance should go give it a big hug right now. Those who wrote here about built in obsolescence are absolutely correct. (I will say, I still love my Speed Queen washer and dryer, bought from a Mom & Pop store up north.)

It is better to buy appliances from Lowes.
agreed. never had a 'bad' purchase from Lowe's. up north we had an issue with home depot & a washing machine. sounds like the same story. now i avoid the Depot @ all costs.

At least they let me borrow a refrigerator have been without any appliances since Dec 14. They say it is LGs problem. I called corporate at LG and Home Depot. LG explained everything to me and Homedepot outride lied to me were very unhelpful. I will never deal with them again. Needless to say we are using our grill a lot. They are now saying Feb 8th. Homedepot has refused to lend me a stove.

The CITI Costco card still has the extended warranty (just used it 2 weeks ago on a printer) however most all the bank cards ended it last year except on SELECTED cards. Some AMEX cards still have it as well. They still will honor it if it was dropped as long as the purchase was made when it was available.

Appliance Direct if not busy that day will FOLLOW YOU HOME with the appliance.......and they are usually cheapest..... Yes, if you buy what they have in back but they often don't have the one you specifically want in stock especially higher end models. Best Buy (who I hate as much as Comcrap) stocks a few as well and their "open box" deals are sometimes spectacular if you are there at the right time. Our OTC microwave died and we bought one that was $400+ all over for $99. It was brand new, still had all the tape on it. Customer returned it because it didn't fit in their space.

I buy everything on Amazon. Check out reviews, prices on other websites, then buy from Amazon. At most, they might be a day late, but that's rare.

I went to Appliance Direct for that reason. We were there Thursday, couldn't get the fridge until Monday, maybe.

My 28 year old refrigerator quit 2 years ago. The one I replaced it with is a piece of junk. Had problems with it within 6 months. What I don't understand is they had the design right in 1989 why don't they just build using proven technology instead of the junk they are selling now.

I think it depends on the area. My brother in law works for Lowes in Buffalo. They deliver their own purchased appliances and home goods.
