If the leak is coming from where the shower head screws onto the pipe, that's simple to fix. You just need to tighten it up a little bit. If that doesn't fix it, remove the shower head and put about 2 or 3 wraps of Teflon tape over the pipe threads. Then reinstall the shower head. That should do it.
You don't need to turn the water off to the shower. Just don't have it running while doing the "fix".

The shower head should not be getting any water to it when the valves are shut unless there is something wrong with the mixing valve/diverter.

If your shower is a Delta, the cartridge , that inserts has a lifetime guarantee--it must be replaced- we used CPM to replace the cartridge
Its not ,IMHO a do it yourself job, because water to the house must be turned off, if something goes wrong-you'll need a plumber

There is no separate valve to turn off the shower, except the mixing valve. If the shower leaks continuously after turning it off, then you need a new mixing valve. That is NOT a DIY project. Call a plumber. If you just need a new shower head, it is easy to replace yourself, but I would not try to fix it. Just buy a new one. When installing a new shower head, make sure not to overtighten it. Use the Teflon tape and tighten it by hand, and if it leaks a little, use a wrench and give it a one quarter turn.
