Dirty Jobs

Driving on Morse Blvd north of CR 466 past the preserve across from mail stop I saw a crew of workers in the preserve cutting brush and trees and they were waist deep in the slimy green water. That area has got to be infested with gators, snakes, insects.

Are these the jobs that Americans wont take? I would not blame them.

Many years ago, I was a young college student in Florida. My brother and his new bride decided to give Florida a try. The first job they got involved boarding a van in the middle of summer, going deep into the humid swamps and marshes to collect tropical plants to be sold to some company.

In order to have proper attire for the job, my sister-in-law borrowed a pair of hip waders I had just bought for 50 cents at a church bazaar. She took about two steps into the muck, got the waders stuck in the mud, pulled them off and trekked back to the bus and never went into the swamp again.

I was so mad that she left my surf fishing hip waders. My brother quit after about a week because he got a "better" job as a roofer in Daytona Beach. We've laughed about that for years. Man that was a good deal on those hip waders.

My oldest sister, who is now a vice president with BB & T Bank in Virginia, once worked (for a day) at a plant that made hand grenades. That's another story.

I'm from the mountains where coal was king. Playing in gator swamps would seems like a pie job for some people I know who are miners and crawl on their bellies in black coal mines.

How about Americans in the military. Sorry, I get your point. It just made me think.

A woman died a few months ago in the shallows of the St. John's river. She got stuck wading in the mud and drowned when the tide rose. Tragic!
