Have suffered with restless leg syndrome for at least five years, and currently taking Ropinirole 3mg three times a day. More often than not, the RLS wakes me when sleeping, and I seldom get more than four to five hours of sleep a night. If anyone knows of a better way to treat this condition, I'm all ears. I've heard that cannibis might be a good option, but I'd like to hear from others before I take that route.

Put a bar of soap under the sheets at the foot of the bed. It works for leg cramps at night and it's reported to work for RLS as well.

Ropinorole comes in an extended release form. My wife tales 1 10 mg ER at bedtime. Requires a Rx. If you have one, try Sams Club pharmacy ( If you have a premium membership) it is very fairly priced without insurance. Check it out.

We are often dehydrated here in Florida and that can cause RLS. Also carbonation can do this as well. If you haven’t already, try Natural Calm (a relaxing Magnesium Supplement) and stop drinking all carbonation. Good luck!

Correction to post of jimnc
That should be taking one tablet Ropinirole ER 4 mg tablet daily.
Sorry for any confusion this may have caused. Please ask your doctor about this. It really did help my wife.

I suffered my first episode of RLS last night and hope this doesn't happen again, how miserable. If it happens again, a bar of Irish Spring is the first thing I'll try. Thanks.

I have RLS and take ropinirole 5 mg once a day. I take 1/2 a tab midday. That takes care of mine. Have you tried a warm bath and then leg stretches?

My husband has had success with Pramipexole, a prescription drug that was originally used to treat Parkinson’s disease but is also now used for RLS. He takes as needed.

It's strange but the "bar of soap" works. My jumping leg would wake my wife. She heard of the soap option and, without my knowing, placed several bars under the sheet. My leg stopped jumping. So far Ivory Snow and Zest.

My Dr. agree for me to try it and I have been fine ever since. I started wit 1/2 mg and am now at 1 mg 20 yrears later. Speak to your Doctor.

I took Gabapentin (also called by the brand name Neurotin) for about ten years for diabetic neuropathy in my feet and it worked great. I just googled other uses and found that gabapentin improves sleep, daytime function, and symptoms of restless legs syndrome (RLS), according to two pooled analyses presented at the 28th Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies. A dose of 600 mg/day provides significant improvement to patients with moderate to severe primary RLS, but a dose of 1,200 mg/day may be more effective for patients with severe primary RLS. The most frequent adverse events associated with gabapentin enacarbil are somnolence and dizziness. Next time you see your doctor, bring up this drug. Each pill is 300 mg so that would be 2 to 4 per day using the numbers above. I was told by my doctor I could take up to 2700 mg a day.

Please try CBD oil , our friend has Parkinson’s , RLS , and also was on sleeping pills for 20 years . He has been able to get off the sleeping pills and has also calmed his legs . It has also helped with his Parkinson’s.
CBD oil more natural remedy than chemical pills . Has worked for our friend .

When doing research on gabapentin (which I take for another condition) it was also being used for RLS. Prescription needed. You could discuss this with your doctor too--just another option.

There is no clear rationale for placing a bar of soap in the bed as a means to treat either restless legs or leg cramps.
RLS is defined by an uncomfortable feeling associated with an urge to move that occurs most often at night when lying down. It happens during wakefulness and is typically relieved by movement, especially by getting up and walking around or shifting the legs. It may be caused by iron deficiency and other medical conditions.
Like this forum, it is a popular topic in the other discussion forums and comment threads, but is there science to support the claims?
The short answer still is: no.

There is no proved scientific or rational reason...it should work.
For some of us...it just does. :ho:

Once upon a time, it was impossible for bumblebees to fly. But since they didn't know that, they flew anyway.
This theory has since been debunked and explained by actual science.
Once upon a time, there was no scientific evidence that putting a bar of soap at the foot of your bed would do anything other than make your toes smell nice in the morning. But your legs didn't know this, and they stopped cramping up anyway.
Some day, science will have an explanation for it.
For now, it's enough to know that it really does tend to work.

I also take Pramipexole and recently increased from .25 to .50 which read is the preferred dose and it helps me sleep through the night
