Neighbors in Wildwood are upset over some dog owners training their dogs to pee in the road instead of the grass.
The owner's reasoning was dog pee turns the grass yellow/ kills it. What do you think? Is it worth the upset or are the owner's being considerate of their neighbor's grass?

I like to reserve the things I let bother me and get upset over to things of a much, much, much greater magnitude...unless someone likes to run around and play in street puddles, I don't see this a thing to even give that much thought to....

The problem with peeing in the street is that it has no place to "go" and will bake into the concrete, creating a stench and potentially corroding the road (depending on how many dogs pee in the same spot or how many times one dog pees in the same spot).
On rainy days this is a non-issue. But when it's not raining - it can become an issue.
Dog owners can buy neutralizer granules to sprinkle on their pooch's puddle, to reduce the smell and risk of corrosion to the surface.
But considering that there are no sidewalks in most of the residential (all of them? I don't know) areas of the Villages, and that people have to run on those roadsides, I'd say that the potential for a health risk is more important than the potential for a yellow spot on your lawn.
I'm not too concerned about the yellow spot (it bugs me but it's not a big deal). I'm much more concerned about what I'm tracking into the house after going for a walk.

If the dogs are allowed to run into the street to "Pee" without a Leash, we have another problem.

As a courtesy to my neighbors, I always walk my dog in the street so she doesn’t go on their lawns. I have a baggie to pick up any messes. Even though I give her the chance to relieve herself on our lawn before we leave, sometimes nature calls during the walk.

I think that is very considerate of you, both for your neighbors who work hard on their lawns and for your dog, who is best to avoid all the fertilizer and pesticide these lawn need/use. I just had my lawn treated and even though there is a sign some (idiots?) still let their dog go on the treated lawn. I put coarse black pepper on the lawn which keeps their (much smarter) dogs away.

What are you feeding your dog that would cause its urine to corrode the road?? Diesel fuel or gas would ruin the pavement, not urine.

Just out of curiosity, you are not concerned about yellow spots on your own lawn or other people’s lawn? The reason I ask is because they maybe concerned about their lawn.

I'm not especially concerned with lawns in general, as I've posted many times previously. A yellow spot on my - or anyone else's - lawn - is not of any importance to me at all.

I guess you've never lived in or frequented a city. You can see the corrosion marks on sidewalks where homeless relieve themselves, in the corners between two buildings.
That aside, the stench is enough to concern me. Baked urine on pavement is horrible.
In addition, summertime will bring VERY hot pavement. It is unsafe and cruel for pet owners to force their animals to walk on the pavement in the Florida summer sun.

If you can teach your dog to pee in the street then you can teach it to pee in the drain.

Why, do some, conclude their dog shall not pee or poop in their own yard?

:doggie: Maybe feed the dogs some "Asparagus " then they can leave some green spots on the lawns. :icon_wink:

Goodness! As a responsible pet owner, I NEVER walk my dog in the heat of a summer day. We go early or late, when the pavement is cooler. When she asks to go out in the afternoon, I walk her around the house, in my yard, on a leash. Also, one can hardly equate what is produced by a 15 pound dog and a 200 pound human.
Seems like yet another problem that can’t be solved to everyone’s satisfaction.

Good lord. They moan and bi*ch if the dogs pee in their yards and they moan and bi*ch if the dogs pee in the street.
Get a life crybabies, we with dogs are pretty damn sure you're not perfect; you probably speed in your cart and car, run stop signs, throw your yard waste away with the garbage, cheat on your taxes - get the idea?
The dogs pee in the streets is not as worse as some of the stuff you flush down the sewer drains on your streets.

When I was a kid, my neighbors put down a 6x8 foot area with pavers in the back corner of their yard. I know this because I used to mow their yard (back when kids mowed yards). They put a few bushes around it and trained the dogs to go there. Seemed like it made cleanup easier and cured the muddy paw issue when it rained. OK, I am now ready for all the negative responses, let them fly !!!

Complaints like this show me that The Villages are a GREAT place to live. The complaints are so small a person would have to really think hard to come up with something like this. I rent one month a year and have my eye on a future home there so this confirms I have nothing to fear!

As a responsible dog owner who lives in TV, this is I how handle it....my dog pees and poops only in my yard, I'm sure my neighbors would not appreciate my dog using their manicured lawns as her private bathroom! When I walk the dog, we golf cart to an area where she can go and I can pick it up. I can't imagine my girl peeing in the street...ever.

Following the incredible importance of barring dogs from peeing in the street due to the health issues, the crumbling of our infrastructure and its impact on meteor attraction, I have grown increasingly concerned...to the point of absolute fright...about birds pooping on the streets whilst flying overhead. It seems to me that this is a matter of the utmost importance and The Villages should buy drones to otherwise direct these birds to do their business only over the many lakes we have in The Villages.
As you can see, I only want to focus on issues that are of the greatest concern to our wonderful citizens of the Villages!

Yes. I had something similar, a nice large sandbox (for large dogs) in my backyard. My husband built a 5 foot fence for our young children and another fenced off area for the dogs.
I do feel that people who are lazy and don’t want to take their dog to a designated place, or can’t provide for their own pets, should not have pets. They refuse or can’t take accountability for an animal that relies completely on them. And it is not fair to the animal.
I realize as one grows older the pet may become more and more valuable but it is a live being with needs and if one can’t take care of it, and won’t hire someone to help take care of it .....
Perhaps we could have (or maybe we have it already) a volunteer organization to help people out with their pets if they can’t do it themselves.

I also walk my dog without allowing her to potty on my neighbor's lawns. I did this before I moved to TV and will continue to do so. I give her the opportunity to potty on my own lawn before and after our walks. She has never actually gone IN the street, but also, has never tried to get on someone else's lawn while on a walk. I think there are much worse things you could walk through and subsequently bring into your house without worrying about dog pee. The OP should be thankful the neighbor isn't letting their dog out at night to poop on neighboring lawns (and not picking up after them) as I have dealt with.

Let me tell you, this is NOT a laughing matter. I live on a street where people have let their dogs pee in the street, for whatever their reason, and our street is now one ugly road full of dark circles! It seeps into the roadway and becomes a permanent, and very ugly stain.

My dog prefers to pee on the edge of the sidewalk. I carry a bottle of water and rinse it away. I also always pickup her poop.
She is potty pad trained at home but when out on our daily walk she relieves herself. Pet owners could be considerate of others by just cleaning up after their pets. This would help non pet owners from getting upset. I understand those who don't like yellow spots in their yards.
I will be moving into the Villages soon. I walk my dog with a stroller. She rides & walks. Before anyone makes comments there is a reason for the stroller. I have lung issues which my doctor said I should walk daily. If it is too hot or cold my dog wants to be carried. I can't carry her along with walking. Hence I put her in the stroller. Also when I get tired I have balance issues. The stroller is for me not my dog. My dog insists on her daily walk so she gets me out daily unless it is raining.
Sometimes people make comments not thinking there maybe a reason people do things.
Since people with pets see me they have bought a stroller because their dog is old or for another reason that helps them be with their pet plus get some exercise.
It does help to think before we speak.

Just a question! Are you complaining or wondering how they trained their dogs to go in street? It’s better than yellow spots on grass or killing your bushes. Not trying to be a wise guy, but this sounds great!

see simple solution and no more need to carry poop bag either.
Now our streets are safe from erosion/corrosion/implosion and wet spots.

In my area, people spend hundreds, I spend thousands of dollars on my yard per year to keep it healthy and attractive. Mostly to make it nice as the rest of my neighborhood. To replace parts of the lawn is a lot of work and expense and I’d like to see the dog owner saying, “I’ll compensate you for the damage my dog did to your yard.” Until that is the case, I think people have a valid reason to be interested.
As a dog owner, I also prefer not to make my considerate and kind neighbors upset.

So how do you feel when the trash truck on your street fills up and the driver decides to compact the trash towards the front of the truck and that oozy liquified garbage pours out of the truck onto your street or when the lawn care company truck applying liquid fertilizer, weed control or pest control leaks onto your street - what happens to those permanent, very ugly stains?
One of my "girls" occasionally stops short of my grass and pees on my driveway or pees in the street and I swear to whatever God you pray to that she has never left a "dark circle that became a permanent, very ugly stain".

I suffer from COPD and have been diagnosed with ILD Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD): Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment (https://www.webmd.com/lung/interstitial-lung-disease) I have a doctor signed document on file with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Chapter 482 F.S of Florida Pest Control Law, requires that the FDACS maintain a current registry of persons who require prior notification of the application of pesticides.
To restate, that law requires that those companies who spray noxious compounds in the air check with the FDACS before application and notify property owners within a 1/2 mile distance from their property.
I have asked the gentlemen doing the application near my house, not one company does the checking.
