I'm considering the purchase of a whole house water purification system and have narrowed it down to Pelican and Nova. Pelican is a national brand while Nova appears to be a local small business. Pelican is more expensive but requires less frequent maintenance. Can you give me your thoughts/experiences with these companies? Thanks!

We have Nova and it is excellent. The only maintenance is once a year when they come to change the filters.

How often does Pelican require maintenance? Nova goes by the number of gallons of water used. Or if the house has been sitting empty for a long period of time. With us, we don't use 26000 gallons of water every year, and the house sits empty. Our maintenance is once a year.

Have had NOVA in both homes we've owned in TV. Also found that we can go 1 1/2 between filter changes. Cost also a big factor, NOVA system and a water softener installed for around $1,600 can't be beat.

Good to know! Do you go by gallons of water used, Kahuna? There are only two of us here, with company only two weeks out of the year.

Going with Nova was the best money I've spent on an improvement to our home since we got here. They changed our filters yesterday and everything went flawlessly and as usual they were on time and knowledgeable and efficient.

The Filter especially the first and 2nd ones were in rough shape. It's so much better having NOVA than it is buying a dozen cases of water every month. The shower is better and the laundry feels much better also. It was around $600 and for me it would have been a bargain if it was double that amount. I'm happy with them big time.

We use a GE whole house water filter change the cartridge every 6 months, water is just fine--buy the filters (carbon) online for under $20.00

I have had my Nova system for 6 years and could not be happier. The water tastes great and no smell.
The 3 cartridge unit mounts on the wall in your garage and does not take up valuable floor space.
Bob and his son Brad have established a great business and offer great customer service.

I have installed the Pelican system, which is located in Deland, FL, just down the road. I like the taste/smell of the water and it doesn't use any salt to soften the water. Once a year filter change after the first year. Very happy with it.

Pelican is the way to go!! They are excellent to deal with, the system is excellent and like you said, way less maintenance. We got it when we moved in 4 years ago...not a spec of problems. Changing the filter is all we do and it is easy peasy, lemon squeeze!!

We have the Nova system it works very well and saves the need for the fridge filter. We find that annual water consumption leads to annual replacement of the filters. So for us it works. The company are reliable in our experience. The installation is quick and looks very neat in the garage. Hope that helps. Ray.

I have Pelican and love it.

To me, the Nova guy has an attitude and it turned me off.

We have NOVA and really like it. Water quality was Night and Day once we installed the system. We did not need the water softener. We go by Nova's recommendation of 26,000 gallons. An annual filter change is easy to remember however we, like you, are only two folks with infrequent visitors so it will take longer to reach their 26K recommendation. Another thing to consider is that we had a water main break and the drinking water was contaminated for a few days. Nova handled it with no problem but we will change ours at the annual date this year to be on the safe side. The guys at NOVA are fantastic and customer focused. Installation was less than 45 minutes.

We've looked at this subject several times. We've had a demonstration in our home, and we've seen how a smear on our stainless fridge looks so bad with our water vs purified water. In the end however, after talking with people in the plumbing industry, people in The Villages really don't need such an expensive system. We have a simple sediment and charcoal filter system on our home, and the water quality is fine. My showers aren't being compromised, the dishes come out clean, and in my opinion it would be better to invest in the stock market when it's so low!!! I just don't see that you'll be getting a great return on investment with these expensive water treatment systems.

Their maintenance according to their website "Filter be replaced every 6-9 months"
Ours is 7-12 months

Not sure why you said we're a small local biz, we ship not only nationally, but internationally. In TV we have I believe more customers (over 5,000)

Nova started in NY over 40 years ago, since 2013 I'm living in TV

I moved to TV in 2013. I believe I had the Nova system installed in 2014. The cost then was $500.

Since then I had the filters replaced several times at $135. The filters themselves cost $105 so I felt it's not worth changing the filters myself since Nova has the tool and know how. Besides, they are heavy because they are filled with water. A young persons type job.

I was informed that being a single person, I could wait a year and a half to change filters. The standard is 26,000 gallons.

Found the Nova filters to be an inexpensive way to keep quality water in my house. IMHO

I went with Pegasus as it has a self cleaning process that runs in the middle of the night, so I don't require the annual filter maintenance. They will also move the system once free of charge if I ever move.

GE is a large canister its mounted on the wall, CPM installed ours with a bypass valve--it filters taste & sediment--that is all any filter system should do--filters do not soften water--we installed an electronic descaler, stops scale on faucets--flushed our hot water heater for the first time in 91/2 years--no sediment

I agree the TV homes need some kind of water purification systems. Water smells badly from chlorine & taste bad. I know TV says they have good & safe drinking water but what do we expect them to say. I really loved living in TV, but moved because of all of family. Any kind of water filtering system would work, still would be better than what TV keeps telling everyone about the water. Don’t let the water run you out of TV!

we went with NOVA...I purchase the filters from them and change them out myself...not a big deal

My cousin who was retired IBM facilities maintenance did the initial research for all of us cousins in TV. We all put in NOVA units (and actually got a slight volume discount)

What sold us on NOVA was that the company originally serviced fish aquariums in NYC commercial buildings. Fish actually need better water than humans and this was the unit that they would install. When the owner retired and moved to TV he saw the need for water filters....so he started selling/installing...caught so well his son came down to help.

save your money go to Lowes or Home Depot. All the systems basically do the same thing. Its just water nothing special or magical about filtration.

How is that better than replacing the filters? How do you know the back flushing removes everything?

For instance... I have a self-cleaning oven. It does okay but doesn't get everything.

I like having totally new filters put in every 26000 gallons.

The ones I have seen back flush the water using a plastic pipe that is installed through the back wall of the garage, and dumps it into the side yard.

I like having totally new filters put in every 26000 gallons.

Fact no type of carbon can washed clean, contaminants are trapped in millions of microscopic pores. The networks of pores in activated carbons are channels created within a rigid skeleton of disordered layers of carbon atoms, stacked unevenly, creating a highly porous structure of nooks, crannies, cracks and crevices between the carbon layers.

The back washing only washes off surface sediment.

You may think of trying to clean a filthy sponge with water, not happening.

General rule is max of 18 months in a filter system, but actual number of gallons is a more accurate method.

I came to TOTV with the same question. I read this post and all its replies with recommendations. I went to the NOVA web site as well. I went with NOVA. They installed the system and now the water is finally drinkable here. We had been going to Publix and using the vending machine to re-fill bottles. The installation these days is very safe, you just open the garage door and stay in your house.

Had Nova installed a year ago. Quick install and no problems. Main shut off valve is relocated from in the wall and on the floor to easy access. Filter needs to be replaced annually. Last year filter replacement was quoted at $125 and less if one did it themselves. $600 investment versus thousands.

We think Nova is the best, a great product, a great price and a great team of guys 👍👍

If you look at the state of the filters in those pictures, after about a year of use, you will see why there is a need for a house filter system here in TV.

Thanks,

Just to clarify, the filter changes are NOT necessarily annually,
the change is based on 26,000 gallons used not time. (excluding irrigation)

for example if using
2,000 a month 12 months
3,000 a month 9 months
4,000 a month 6.5-7 months

your monthly amenity bill has your water usage stated

However, some villages don't split the bills drinking/irrigation

If those home we offer a meter $89

A filter only filters, it’s not a purification system. We installed reverse osmosis, a compact system by Blondell under the sink as well as filters for those times we miss a boil water notice. It’s not as good as whole-house reverse osmosis but gives more peace of mind.

Sorry but that's not entirely correct, Nova 3 stage whole house filters do purify to a certain 5 micron level.

We also have 5 stage reverse osmosis units that filter beyond that level into the tenths of a micron.

https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-aabq2uqurc/images/stencil/1280x1280/products/129/403/ro5__17638.1579978382.1280.1280__59979.1580176671. jpg?c=1&imbypass=on

I did a full page on these on our website (https://novafilters.com/reverse-osmosis-info/) Reverse Osmosis | RO Filter System for the home (https://novafilters.com/reverse-osmosis-info/)

As to whole house reverse osmosis they are not practical they require a large 200 gallon holding tank & pumps in the garage and the cost is prohibitive.

If you have the Brondel RO model I think you have it's a 3 or 4 stage not 5, also the replacements are about $80.
ours are $49 for 5

Ours cost the same $250, so you get better value IMO

I wonder what the filters are like at 25,000 gallons.

I can tell you that at our house (just off of Hillsborough) the 9 month old filters looked brand new. As far as noticing any difference in taste or smell of the water, I honestly don’t notice any difference, nor does the wife.

I’ll now go at least 12 months (as the Tech with NOVA recommended) between changes.

It's NOT based on time it's 26,000 gallons, so 9 months in age is not an indicator it's your water bills please see what you use on average per month.

the reason the filters may look clean to the naked eye is because anything less than 15 microns can't be seen with our eyes, however, the first filter always shows dirt in 26,000 gallons.

We had Nova installed soon after arriving in Oct 2018 (cost was $610). They recently came out and changed the filters; the tech told us that we live in an area with fairly decent water quality to start with and we could wait up to 2 years before the next filter change. I drink alot of water (100+ oz per day) and water quality is really important to me.

jimbo2012
06-15-2020, 01:36 PM
Sharon, I think there was a mis understanding, filter changes are NOT based on time they based on the number of gallons used or the way they look to your eye. :ohdear:

The change point is 26,000 gallons.

Secondly, the way filters look to the naked eye is irrelevant, the filters are trapping particles the human eye can not see.

Since water quality is as important us as yourself change the filters at 26,000 gallon or maximum of 15 months if that # is not reached.

look at your water bills see what your monthly use is.

---
if you drink 2 gallons a day that's 1800 a month.
add cooking, bathing, cooking & washing.

I think you are at 7-8 months to use 26,000

Please call for more info

Well aware of what my potable usage is. We hit the 26k mark, which happened to be around the 9 month time frame.

And of course I'm basing what I see on the naked eye. Maybe where I live is blessed with cleaner than "average" water.
